Tasmania’s Huon Valley – Open up to the South!
The Huon Valley starts just 25 minutes south east of
Hobart, and encapsulates everything that Tasmania
has to offer in one place.
Huonville is the main hub, famous for its apples and
cider lovers will be in heaven! Travel east and stop in at
studios and galleries to admire the work of local artists
and craftspeople, and choose a precious keepsake
in Cygnet.
Crossing the bridge at Huonville and travelling south you
will arrive at Franklin, one of the world’s last refuges for
the disappearing craft of wooden boat building. But there
is more to the Huon than just food and crafts, with the
real treasure being Mother Nature herself.
Geeveston combines contemporary country living with
rich pioneer heritage of logging days gone by. It’s also
the gateway to the wonderful temperate rainforests of
the southern forests, Hartz Mountains National Park
and World Heritage Wilderness Area.
If it’s nature you are seeking on a grand scale, the far
south will take your breath away and replace it with
some of the purest air on earth. Descend into nature’s
cathedrals at Hastings Caves and immerse yourself in
the warm thermal springs.
Venture to as far as the road takes you, and arrive at
beautiful Cockle Creek. Take a foreshore stroll to the
whale sculpture, or for the more avid bushwalker, head
out to the miraculous South East Cape and be blown
away by the fact that just a hop, skip and a jump
(well, ok not quite), you could be at Antarctica!
The sheltered seaside towns of Dover and Southport,
offer seclusion to the fishermen who harvest the
Southern Ocean’s bountiful crayfish, oysters and salmon
that feature on menus around the world. Coupled with
some of the world’s most pristine beaches and white
sands, you will never want to leave.
