LAUNCESTON
It’s pronounced ‘Lon-ceston’ rather than ‘Lawn’,
and if you see a furry face peering out at the Gorge
you’re probably looking at a pademelon.
Now you’re speaking like a local, let’s start exploring
Tasmania’s second-biggest city.
Feast on the freshest
Launceston offers big-city café culture with the
friendliness of a country town. The quality of the
coffee is outstanding (Launcestonians did found
Melbourne, after all) while the local cuisine is
world class.
Heritage homes and buildings
Launceston’s a very walkable city, so step out
and look up at the rich blend of architecture
around town from Victorian, Georgian and
Federation eras to cutting-edge design. There’s a
plethora of stately heritage buildings to explore,
from the grand Albert Hall, Custom House and
Town Hall to the convict-built Franklin House
in Youngtown.
Getting active
There’s plenty of nature-based action around
here. If you have energy to burn after all that
cheese and wine, then hike on the Zig Zag track
or further past the cantilevered lookout to the
old Duck Reach Power Station. Strap in for a ride
through the trees with cable hang gliding, or try
your hand at rock climbing up Cataract Gorge’s
sheer cliff walls. Fancy a dip? The Gorge’s First
Basin features a free outdoor swimming pool
overlooking the river in summer months, while
Launceston Leisure & Aquatic Centre offers
modern heated indoor pools all year round.
Travelling beyond Launceston
Launceston is an easy journey to Tasmania’s best
waterfalls, caves, beaches and beyond. You might
travel to meet wombats on the tracks at Cradle
Mountain, or to descend into Mole Creek Caves
to see glow worms light up like stars. Wherever
you travel, you’ll never be far away from the
unforgettable food and sights of Launceston.
LAUNCESTON
Penny Royal
Penny Royal has burst onto the international tourism
scene with its unique environment saturated with 1820’s
beauty, modern day adventures and an excellent selection
of restaurants, cafés, wine and craft beer and spirit bars.
Situated in the old Launceston quarry (next to the Gorge),
the precinct is in easy walking distance of Launceston CBD
and all it’s major hotels.
The impressive staircase to Penny Royal leads to a breath
taking first impression as you capture your first glimpse
and discover a world tucked behind the modest replica
1800’s facades. As you step into the grounds of Penny
Royal your eyes cast across the Brig Tamar awaiting sail
on the lagoon in front of the magnificent 30 meter waterfall
next to the beautiful Penny Royal Wine Bar and Restaurant.
As you follow the anxious gaze and encouraging cheers of
fellow visitors you see a brave participant summoning the
courage to launch from the quick jump, ready to experience
5.5m of freefall from the 20m high quarry cliff before
gliding down to the net below.
Then step aboard the government Brig ‘Tamar’, cruise on
the lagoon, hear about Launceston’s past, explore Sarah
Island, meet Brady’ ghost, and experience the thrill of an
authentic 24 pound cannon firing as you return fire with
cannons aboard the ship.
Youngsters and families scatter the grounds amidst the
entertainment of attractions. For our younger generation
try your hand at panning for gold and fossicking for gem
stones in the mine, or enjoy the convict barefoot sensation
adventure trail and experience the sensations of having to
work in your bare feet all those years ago.
After an action packed day of exploring and discovering,
sit back, relax, and enjoy the picturesque replica 1825 stone
buildings overlooking the lagoon as you indulge in great
local food, fine Tasmanian wines and craft beers.
Penny Royal offers an invigorating and enlightening
experience that you’ll never forget – come and explore!
Enjoy casual or a la carte dining on the restaurant deck
overlooking the lagoon as people journey above on the
Cliff Walk or watch the courageous use the Zip Lines that
propels them 100m across the iconic Penny Royal grounds
in front of you.
The Penny Royal complex offers a rich experience
steeped in history, detailing the ‘gentleman’s’ bushranger
- Mathew Brady’s - story dating back to convict times in
Van Diemen’s Land. Jump aboard a barge on the Mathew
Brady Dark Ride to immerse yourself in the escapades of
iconic local bushranger Mathew Brady recreated by realistic
human animatronics. Escape the gunfire and unlike Brady,
live to tell the tale.
TAMAR VALLEY
At the heart of the Tamar Valley just to the
north of Launceston is the majestic Tamar River,
meandering for almost 60 kilometres through
magnificent country side.
The area is a well-established wine and food
aficionado’s wonderland with over 30 cellar
doors to explore including Jansz, Pipers Brook
and Ninth Island Estate.
Chardonnary, Reisling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris
and Gewurztraminer are all grown here, producing
fresh, elegant whites. Our sparkling wines have
gained national and international admiration. In
red wines, Pinot noir is king. Pair these classy
wines with fresh fare and savour a tasting platter
of local delicacies at any of the stunning vineyards
that line the banks of the Tamar River.
From here head down the picturesque West
Tamar and take a stroll along the boardwalk at
the Tamar Island Wetlands Centre followed by
a visit to the Swiss Village of Grindelwald on
your way. A visit to the Beaconsfield Mine and
Heritage Centre gives you an excellent account
of the mines collapse in 2006. Close by at Beauty
Point uncover some fascinating facts about the
wonderful inhabitants at Seahorse World and
Platypus House.
Travel across Australia’s first cable-stayed bridge
built in the 1960’s, the Batman Bridge. George
Town and Low Head at the mouth of the Tamar
River have witnessed many ship wrecks from
days gone by, often caused by the stormy seas of
Bass Strait. Many of these stories are depicted at
the Maritime Museum at Low Head and the Bass
and Flinders Centre at George Town.
Journey back down the East Tamar where you
can enjoy local cheeses and fruit at farm gates
in Hillwood. Visit Hollybank Forest Reserve for
a variety of walks, mountain bike trails, segway
tours and a high-wire treetops adventures.
HERITAGE HIGHWAY
The Heritage Highway follows much of the
original route between Launceston and Hobart,
built by convict road gangs in the early 1800’s.
The scenery all year round is spectacular as is the
heritage architecture. There’s a number of villages
and towns along the highway with antique and
vintage stores and charming country pubs.
One of those towns is Oatlands boasting a huge
number of sandstone buildings in its main street,
including the restored Georgian windmill the
Callington Mill.
Further north, historic Ross continues to enthral
with colonial charm – a feature is the town’s
intricately carved convict-built bridge and the
female convict prison, the Ross Female Factory.
Be sure to drop into the Wool Centre while you
are there and learn more about the local history.
The combined World Heritage listed sites of
Brickendon Farm and Woolmers Estate on the
outskirts of Longford are a must. Combined,
these sites offer a unique and fascinating
reflection of colonial life in Tasmania. The
National Rose Garden can also be found at
Woolmers and you can visit the two gallery
spaces on site. Linked by a short walk is the
colonial farm village of Brickendon Estate which
also offers heritage accommodation.
The historic town of Evandale is worth a visit at
any time of year but the annual Penny Farthing
Championships, the weekly Sunday market or
the Glover Art Show are all highlights on the
town’s calendar.
TAMAR VALLEY
NORTH EAST
Diversity abounds in the north east, apart
from the natural beauty and a continuation of
beautiful untouched beaches, there’s temperate
rainforests. At the northern end of the east coast
is the Mt William National Park with expansive
views of the Furneaux Islands.
Visit the Eddystone Point Lighthouse, the Bay
of Fires and Musselroe Wind Farm for starters.
Then from the east coast, head inland towards
Weldborough Pass. Along the way look out for
the turn off to the St Columba Falls which boasts
a spectacular 90 metre drop waterfall.
Taste the delicious award-winning cheese at the
Pyengana Dairy Company and visit the Pub in
the Paddock while you are there and meet a beer
swilling pig.
One of the biggest attractions in recent times in
Derby is mountain bike riding with the terrain
attracting some of the best riders in the world
along with locals and visiting enthusiasts.
The trails take in the beauty of rainforests
and encompasses some of the most stunning
landscapes in the state. Scottsdale is the major
town of the region with a rich agricultural and
forestry history.
The Bridestowe Lavender Estate is just a short
drive away and is at its most spectacular in
December and January when the rolling hills of
lavender are flowering. Then there’s Barnbougle,
most golfing enthusiasts will have heard about
Barnbougle Dunes – everyone deserves to play
a round of golf at Australia’s number one public
golf course situated in a breathtaking location
looking out over Bass Strait.
This is also one of the top wine producing parts
of the state linking with the famous Tamar
Valley. Try a Sparkling Tour which showcases the
region’s bubbles which can be sampled at the
cellar doors of Pipers Brook and Jansz.
