HERITAGE HIGHWAY The Heritage Highway follows much of the original route between Launceston and Hobart, built by convict road gangs in the early 1800’s. The scenery all year round is spectacular as is the heritage architecture. There’s a number of villages and towns along the highway with antique and vintage stores and charming country pubs. One of those towns is Oatlands boasting a huge number of sandstone buildings in its main street, including the restored Georgian windmill the Callington Mill. Further north, historic Ross continues to enthral with colonial charm – a feature is the town’s intricately carved convict-built bridge and the female convict prison, the Ross Female Factory. Be sure to drop into the Wool Centre while you are there and learn more about the local history. The combined World Heritage listed sites of Brickendon Farm and Woolmers Estate on the outskirts of Longford are a must. Combined, these sites offer a unique and fascinating reflection of colonial life in Tasmania. The National Rose Garden can also be found at Woolmers and you can visit the two gallery spaces on site. Linked by a short walk is the colonial farm village of Brickendon Estate which also offers heritage accommodation. The historic town of Evandale is worth a visit at any time of year but the annual Penny Farthing Championships, the weekly Sunday market or the Glover Art Show are all highlights on the town’s calendar.
