LAUNCESTON
It’s pronounced ‘Lon-ceston’ rather than ‘Lawn’,
and if you see a furry face peering out at the Gorge
you’re probably looking at a pademelon.
Now you’re speaking like a local, let’s start exploring
Tasmania’s second-biggest city.
Feast on the freshest
Launceston offers big-city café culture with the
friendliness of a country town. The quality of the
coffee is outstanding (Launcestonians did found
Melbourne, after all) while the local cuisine is
world class.
Heritage homes and buildings
Launceston’s a very walkable city, so step out
and look up at the rich blend of architecture
around town from Victorian, Georgian and
Federation eras to cutting-edge design. There’s a
plethora of stately heritage buildings to explore,
from the grand Albert Hall, Custom House and
Town Hall to the convict-built Franklin House
in Youngtown.
Getting active
There’s plenty of nature-based action around
here. If you have energy to burn after all that
cheese and wine, then hike on the Zig Zag track
or further past the cantilevered lookout to the
old Duck Reach Power Station. Strap in for a ride
through the trees with cable hang gliding, or try
your hand at rock climbing up Cataract Gorge’s
sheer cliff walls. Fancy a dip? The Gorge’s First
Basin features a free outdoor swimming pool
overlooking the river in summer months, while
Launceston Leisure & Aquatic Centre offers
modern heated indoor pools all year round.
Travelling beyond Launceston
Launceston is an easy journey to Tasmania’s best
waterfalls, caves, beaches and beyond. You might
travel to meet wombats on the tracks at Cradle
Mountain, or to descend into Mole Creek Caves
to see glow worms light up like stars. Wherever
you travel, you’ll never be far away from the
unforgettable food and sights of Launceston.
