Repentance, prayer and
righteous deeds
By Rabbi Evan Shore
Sha’arei Torah Orthodox
Congregation of Syracuse
The Jewish High Holidays encompass far
more than just three major services. In the
Mussaf (Additional Service) on all three days
we recite: Teshuvah U’Teffilah U’Tzdekah
(Repentance, Prayer and Righteous Deeds)
have the power to overturn an evil decree. In
other words, our presence in the Synagogue
during services is not sufficient, far more is
expected from each and every single one of
us.
Creed alone is not enough or adequate.
Repentance, prayer and righteous deeds
are essential components to not only begin
the new Jewish year but to reach a positive
conclusion.
One can postulate the performance of the
three actions cited above may have little
bearing upon the ultimate outcome. Certain
things are out of our control. However,
recently I saw a very powerful idea about
prayer. Prayer is not meant to change the
mind of God. Rather it is meant to change
the person reciting it.
Helen Plotkin in Tablet Magazine writes:
“When you read a novel, you don’t appreciate
the characters on the basis of whether
they live long lives with no loss. What you
appreciate is the depth and richness of the
characters’ lives.”
The High Holidays, though involving characters,
isn’t fiction; it is reality! We have the
power and capability to make ourselves
rich in depth, quality and substance in our
interactions between God and our fellow human
beings. Make use of the three-pronged
approach involving repentance, prayer and
righteous deeds.
Identify a weakness in a character trait and
repair it. Spend more time contemplating
words and mindset during services. Lastly,
be there for others. Do not be reactive to the
needs of others, be proactive.
Please God, with this approach, our New Year
can have greater import and worth.
Wishing you a happy, healthy and meaningful
New Year!!
