Geography: Where in the World
Getting Warmer, Getting Colder
L.O. To understand that the temperature at the Earth’s surface changes
as you move away from the Equator.
the North and South Poles.
SPKG1-A1
KS1
• Each player needs a circular piece of paper, with a line drawn across the centre to represent the
Equator, and a counter.
• Players take turn to spin and must follow the instruction they land on; either moving north, south,
away from the Equator (getting colder) or closer to the Equator (getting hotter).
• After each move the players must say what is happening to the temperature and why.
For example, ‘I am moving away from the Equator and it is getting colder.’
• The game continues for a set time or number of moves.
Challenge
The game could be played on an image of the Earth and rather than just moving north or south
the players could move to specific countries. Players could imagine that they are on a boat and
draw a picture of what they see as they move to show how the temperature influences the
environment.
N.C. Objective. Pupils should be taught to identify seasonal and
daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location
of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and
• Players take it in turns to spin
and then put a cross on a
square of the grid below that
is equivalent using their
whiteboard pen.
• For example, if Player 1 spins
¼, they can choose to cover
one of the following; 0.25, 25%,
25/100 or 5/20.
• Four in a line wins the game.
N.C. Objective. Pupils should be
taught to solve problems which
require knowing percentage and
decimal equivalents.
