climate emergency, although integral to
the success of Europe wide projects and
partnerships. Despite this, and because
of this, we are determined to offset our
carbon footprint and Take Art is now
making a financial contribution annually
to climatecare and their global portfolio of
projects that reduce carbon emissions.
A message from Chief
Executive, Ralph Lister
Hello and welcome to Take Art’s Autumn
programme, showcasing the BARNfest
Theatre festival, our current projects and a
new season of Rural Touring.
Take Art has been providing Somerset
communities with shared creative
opportunities for over 30 years. With so
much experience developing a robust and
innovative rural touring model in the UK, we
have been able to transfer that knowledge
to a number of European projects. Read
the International feature (p24), to find out
more about this development in the Take
Art evolution.
At the same time as expanding our work
internationally, we are conscious that these
new projects have led to more plane travel
for the team, not ideal in these times of
Take Art is also part of an Arts Council
programme that aims to limit and reduce
our carbon footprint. Much of our work
in Europe and the UK, is part of a more
sustainable ‘localism’ agenda. Putting on
shows within local settings typically has a
much smaller carbon footprint than shows
in big energy heavy venues, which require
the audience to travel further.
As well as consciously working towards our
own carbon neutrality, we know the arts play
a vital role within the climate emergency, in
shaping that narrative, raising awareness
and holding space for all the emotions that
are coming up. On 26 Sept we are hosting a
Diversity Forum on Arts as Activism in Yeovil
(p4), inviting Arts organisations and artists
from across the county to come together
to discuss our role in the most vital and
pressing issue of our times. Turn the page
to find out more.
Arts as Activism
Diversity Forum for the
Performing Arts in Somerset
How can we use the arts to influence the
political agenda? Think XR, think Banksy,
think Led by Donkeys.
Take Art will host the event, asking the
question how we as a region can make an
impact on the issues that matter?
Spoken word poet, XR activist and author
Pete ‘the Temp’ Bearder will look at how the
arts can be used to create a conversation
between cultures and influence politics
specifically in relation to the climate crisis
and Brexit.
We ask the Somerset performing arts
community to bring their ideas for action on
to tell us how they are going to shape the
narrative in Somerset towards real positive
change.
The Diversity Forum will be followed by the
Rainbow Fish Speak Easy (see next page), a
social prescribing and spoken word poetry
project, which has helped improve the
mental health of countless Yeovil residents.
Attendees are invited to stay on and will be
able to purchase food and refreshments from
Rainbow Fish Speak Easy
Word/Play
For the broken and the brilliant
(and all their friends)
Rainbow Fish Speak Easy is a bi-monthly
spoken word poetry night in Yeovil, with open
mic slots available for anyone with an original
poem to share. The event, hosted by Liv Torc,
is fun, funny, tender and tremendous; with
tips for successfully navigating the human
condition in all its luminous, ludicrous and
lunatic dimensions.
The show comes out of the Take Art's
'performance poetry on prescription' Word/
Play project, which helps adults with mental
health challenges find new ways to talk
about their lives. Along with an open mic
and a short performance from the Somerset
Word/Play group, each Rainbow Fish Speak
Easy features an exciting poetry headliner.
In September we will be running the Rainbow
Fish Speak Easy on the back of our Diversity
forum on Arts as Activism, with special guest
poet, writer and environmentalist Pete the
Temp, whose work has been featured on BBC
Radio 4, the World Service and Newsnight. A
former National Poetry Slam Champion, Pete
is author of the ground-breaking new book
Stage Invasion, charting the unwritten history
and revival of the spoken word art form.
The November show will be headlined
by Rebecca Tantony, a writer driven to
understand the messy and wild human
experience. She has been commissioned by
Radio 4, and her writing has been described
as ‘mesmerising’ by the Guardian.
How I Came to be
Where I Never Was
Jonny Fluffypunk
"A comedy colossus" The Source, Bristol
How do you find yourself when you find
yourself where you don't belong?
Jonny Fluffypunk grew up in the far-flung,
forgotten reaches of outer suburbia. In 1984,
he was fifteen. This is a story about being
the first punk in the village and the only
trainspotter in eyeliner. About unrequited
love and youth clubs and John Peel and the
forgotten gods of small record shops end of
nowhere. This is lo-fi stand-up spoken word
theatre for anyone who has listened to latenight
radio under the bed covers, or fallen in
love, or just been alive.
"One of the funniest things I’ve heard for a
long time. Fantastic act!" Urban75
life-affirming. Highly Recommended"
Mountain Music
Little Bulb/Farnham Maltings
A theatrical musical adventure about
songs that leave and come back again
When pioneers from the British Isles came
to settle in the Appalachian Mountains they
brought with them the invisible baggage of
songs and reels from ‘the old country’.
In this unique theatre spectacle/concert the
fabulous Little Bulb create an unforgettable
tapestry of culture, migration and history
exploring the roots of what we now call
country music and its impact on popular
music today. Told in exquisite three part
harmony and featuring fiddle, bass, guitar,
banjo and mandolin, join us for a theatrical
feast, of tales and songs.
Produced in collaboration with Farnham
Maltings this will be a great evening’s
entertainment. Farnham have never let us
down in ten years of working together: they
reliably turn out really wonderful theatrical
events that are perfect for village halls.
A brave, ground-breaking 50 mins film
The Hard Way
Louise Jordan/Azania Ltd
‘Life to me has been a great adventure’
What can a teenage boy who is into
Parkour and a middle-aged woman with
Parkinson’s possibly have in common? The
desire to move… Kinetics is a film based
on the remarkable true story of two people
seemingly at polar opposites. As Rose tries
to come to terms with her diagnosis, an
unlikely friendship springs up when young
Lukas comes tumbling into her life. But will
the bond between them be strong enough
when things go wrong?
Kinetics was written by Dorchester-based
actor and writer Sue Wylie in reaction to her
diagnosis with early-onset Parkinson’s. As
a stage play it toured the South West and
London, receiving phenomenal feedback
from audiences and medical professionals
alike, for its bravery, honesty, humour and
passion. The film version has been equally
well received and has recently been selected
for the 2018 Cambridge Film Festival.
The Hard Way is a one-woman show that tells
the story of Hannah Mitchell; self-taught, selfmade
woman, campaigner, speaker, writer,
14, Hannah escapes domestic drudgery in
a remote hilltop farm in the Derbyshire Peak
The Moon Under Water
Andrew James Brown
George Orwell liked pubs. Andrew
James Brown LOVES pubs. All pubs!
Taking Orwell’s 1946 essay The Moon
Under Water as a starting point, Andrew
James Brown looks at the joy of pubs,
their essence and their greatness, and,
most importantly the people in them.
Why not join him on his colourful
journey through pubs great and small,
from chain pub to gastro, travelling
through city gin-palaces and country
inns across parquet flooring and sticky
carpet alike.
This humorous look at pubs and people
takes in history, philosophy, musings,
poems and tales of booze, horse
brasses and Morris dancing, all washed
down with a warm lager or two.
Do you like pubs? If so, you'll like this.
At Home with
Will Shakespeare
Pip Utton Theatre
Pip brings to life the ultimate bard
Shakespeare almost certainly wrote some of
the greatest works in the English language
but we know very little about the man except
where he was probably born and is probably
buried. Even the famous portrait, statue and
engraving might be of someone else entirely.
In At Home with Will Shakespeare, Pip Utton
gives us all the chance to spend time with the
great man; a man who loves, laughs, drinks,
sings, dances and cries, and in between
is forced to write some plays and poetry to
make a living. Living a double life, as a family
man and landowner in Stratford on Avon, and
as the great playwright in London, Pip allows
us to meet his wife, his loves and his children.
This is a fun show, both moving and engaging,
bringing the audience right into the centre of
the character exploration.
Pip is internationally respected as one of the
world’s finest solo performers. His style is to
adopt the persona of the famous people he
plays. You may have seen him as Adolf, Bacon,
Churchill, Chaplin, Dickens or even Maggie
Thatcher! Now It's Will Shakespeare and he's
not to be missed!
Each song has been carefully crafted and
researched, and is always accompanied with
a great story and a good degree of humour,
however macabre the content may be! Songs
cover a range of social, political and historical
issues; encompassing family, villages swept
into the sea, polar expeditions, historical
characters and peculiar narratives. Their
music is original and unique, performed on an
array of instruments, including the concertina,
harmonium, banjo, stompbox, acoustic guitar
and dobra.
So warm up your vocal chords, pack your
hankies, put on your finest tweed and prepare
yourselves for an unforgettable evening of
beautiful folk music.
What is DANCE TO HEALTH
Take Art continues to work with Aesop,
to deliver a fantastic project at Dunkirk
House in Bishops Lydeard, which is part
of the national project Dance To Health;
a pioneering ‘falls prevention’ dance
programme for older people.
Groups are led by trained dance artists who
embed evidence-based falls prevention
exercise in creative, fun, sociable dance
sessions for older people who have been
suffering falls or at risk of falling.
At the moment the project is in its 30 week
'Maintenance Programme' phase, where
the existing group of 12 participants
continue to receive regular session with a
dance and falls prevention specialist.
Who does it impact?
The project is making a difference to the
lives of all the dementia patients taking
part, helping to reduce the frequency of
serious falls. Dance to Health also allows
us to recruit Somerset based dance
artists and help them achieve ‘Later Life
Training’.
Little Big Dance
Take Art is joining forces with lead partner
South East Dance, alongside Dance East and
Yorkshire Dance for a major new national early
years dance project.
What is Little Big Dance?
Little Big Dance is a major three-year national
initiative created by South East Dance in
partnership with Take Art, DanceEast and
Yorkshire Dance, with more than £371,000
investment from Paul Hamlyn Foundation and
Arts Council England.
The programme supports choreographers
and dancers to make captivating and diverse
work for, and with, under fives and their
families, particularly those from marginalised
backgrounds with little or no access to the arts.
We want to revolutionise the way early years
dance is recognised and to support more high
quality dance work for the under fives.
Who does it impact?
The voice of the child is at the heart of the
creative process. Throughout the two 18
month cycles delivered over 3 years, eight
commissioned works will be developed, with
four scaled for production in regional venues.
Little Big Dance will support eight dance artists
to gain valuable skills by working in a variety of
pre-school settings.
Little Big Dance is also supported by Dance
Umbrella, Birmingham Hippodrome, Strike
a Light Festival and English National Ballet
School.
Take Art International
Take Art is a unique, life-changing organisation
that doesn’t live in a venue, or studio or a
whacking great theatre but in the villages,
towns and rural communities of Somerset, the
wider UK and now the world.
Take Art established one of the very first rural
touring agencies in the UK back in 1987 and
has seen it develop, grow, contract and survive
over the last 32 years.
Now after three decades of taking art to where
people need it in Somerset, Take Art finds itself
in an extraordinary position, arms out across
the water to our European cousins, with a tried
and tested rural touring model to offer a world
increasingly hungry for new ways of presenting
authentic arts experiences.
There is also no denying the intrinsic social
value of rural arts on local communities, a factor
that has energised us to work with a number of
European partners on the RIOTE2 and SPARSE
projects, initiating new rural touring networks
across Europe.
Basically until the Brexit question is settled, our
approach is to assume the best outcome and
work on that basis.
Impact of Brexit
Take Art’s belief that the rural touring model
is transferable to Europe might seem a little
counter-intuitive in the midst of all the glum,
introspective navel-gazing associated with
Brexit. We remain optimistic however and
were relieved to hear about the UK Guarantee
Scheme in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
OUR INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS
Our RIOTE2 and SPARSE projects focus on the
creation of new rural touring networks in other
countries. Locomotor, which is a Carn to Cove
project, helps us to bring International artists to
the UK to perform on the South West touring
schemes.
All of these projects have put Take Art on the
global map and given us the opportunity to get
involved in RURITAGE, a four-year EU-funded
culture and heritage project with a focus on
rural regeneration.
This feature explores those projects in more
detail on the following pages.
About RIOTE2
RIOTE2 (Rural Inclusive Outdoor Theatre
Education), funded by Erasmus+, gave
Take Art the opportunity to work alongside
a collection of European theatre companies
and film makers passionate about rural and
outdoor performance. The seven companies
involved in the project were from Hungary,
Italy, Romania, Slovenia and UK.
As part of RIOTE2, we researched diverse
styles of theatre which surprise, challenge
and relate intimately to people’s lives. We
were particularly interested in outdoor
theatre’s potential to reach new audiences
who are not necessarily theatre goers.
The UK is one of a few countries to have an
established rural touring network and our
RIOTE2 partners were keen to utilise our
knowledge.
Our specific role in the project has been to
develop a handbook, containing a practical
guide on how to support rural promoters
to put on shows; advice for touring theatre
companies on what to expect when
performing in a rural venue and support to
cultural managers who might wish to create
a rural touring network in their area. You can
About SPARSE
In 2018 Take Art successfully led a Creative
Europe funded project application entitled
SPARSE, (Supporting & Promoting Arts in
Rural Settlements of Europe).
Working with partners in Estonia, Italy,
Lithuania, Romania and associates in
Norway, Sweden and Cornwall (Carn to
Cove), SPARSE will foster rural touring in the
partner countries, where currently a structure
does not exist.
How does SPARSE work?
Across the UK we are very lucky to have
some amazing rural touring schemes which
bring top quality theatre, dance and music to
local communities, giving people a chance
to see shows in their village halls that they
would normally have to travel into larger
towns to see.
SPARSE is bringing knowledge from these
schemes along with knowledge from similar
schemes in Norway and Sweden to support
arts organisation in the partner countries
to create their own rural touring schemes,
working with local promoters from the
villages.
This project is funded by Creative Europe
and is one of just three currently receiving
arts project funding from the EU.
SA Eesti Tantsuagentuur (National dance Agency,
