from the
editor
It’s Pumpkin
Season!!!
Iknow the temperature hasn’t cooled down yet (does it ever?)
but on September 23rd we welcome Fall, the season of
PUMPKIN EVERYTHING! As well as baseball playoffs, and the
beginning of football (go Fins, Bucs, and Jags!).
In this issue you will meet Noreen Payne, our September City
Person. Diane Feen has dubbed her “Goddess of Goodness” and after
reading her story, you will definitely agree. Her passions include
hunger, children, and helping others – but she does so much more.
She is a wife, a mom, a volunteer, a real estate agent, and…if that
wasn’t enough, the incoming Chair for the Delray Beach Chamber of
Commerce. We need more people like Noreen in the world.
The avocado is such a popular berry (yep – it’s a single seed berry),
that guacamole offered in many restaurants as an appetizer and is also
a staple in gatherings as a dip and spread – so much so that guacamole
has its own National Day, September 16th. Look inside for a simple and
delicious recipe because, hey, it’s five o’guac somewhere!
That’s all for now!
Where
there is
ruin, there
is hope for
treasure.
iDental of Delray Beach
BY Dr zACHAry Danowit
Hello! My name is Dr. Zachary Danowit and I am happy
to be a part of the iDental of Delray Beach family.
My family and I recently relocated to Florida from
Illinois. While we are going to miss the cooler weather, we
are happy to welcome the warmth of South Florida. I am
joining iDental as a prosthodontist, which means I have
completed specialty training in the areas of complex dental
rehabilitation, full mouth reconstruction, cosmetic, and
implant dentistry. My specialty training gave me a love for
all types of dental surgery, including implant placement
and high esthetic restorations. I hope that my skillset and
soft-spoken demeanor evokes the confidence, respect, and
professionalism that will give you the comfort level to trust
me and your family with your dental needs. I look forward
to having you as my patient! To schedule a free consultation
with me, please call us at: (561) 381-3100.
Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in September for $50 or less.
Why did the mushroom
get invited
to all the parties?
Because he’s a fungi!
September is National
Mushroom Month and
is a fantastic time to fall
back in love with all the
fungus varietals you can get
your hands on. Since most of
us don’t have a pig or a forest
to forage, we rely on local stores
or restaurants. If you’d rather eat with ease and have no dishes
to clean, then head to Mellow Mushroom and get your mushroom
high off of their supply. Their menu features tons of mushroomfriendly
dishes, with each better than the next. Start with the Magic
Mushroom soup, which is a rich and creamy soup flavored with
Burgundy wine and herbs, topped with MontAmore and grilled
shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms and fresh chives for
$4.79. Then ease into the Brutus Salad, which is an elevated Caesar
salad with kalamata olives, grilled Portobello mushrooms, roasted
red peppers, roma tomatoes and feta cheese for $10.59. For the
pièce de résistance, sink your teeth into the Holy Shiitake Pie that
features shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized
onions, mozzarella and MontAmore cheese, a garlic aioli swirl, a
spritz of black truffle oil, fresh chives and parmesan ($12.99 for a
small). So have a fun time, fungi, and get your schroom on. Mellow
Mushroom is located at 25 SE Sixth Ave. Visit www.mellowmushroom.com
or call (561) 330-3040 for more information.
We should be getting over the dog days of summer, which
means that it’s time to get back outside! September is
Fall Hat Month and while it might not yet feel like Fall,
we can at least don a hat to protect us from the Florida heat. But
where to go, you ask? Downtown for the 25th Annual Downtown
Delray Beach Craft Festival! Held Saturday, September 21 and Sunday,
September 22, you’re invited to peruse the craftiness of tons
of vendors who are selling everything from paintings, sculptures,
plants, clothing, jewelry, kids’ toys and games, and more. The best
24 | september 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
part is that the event is free so you have plenty of green for scoring
a nice piece of artwork for yourself, getting a good idea for a DIY
project, or even getting your holiday shopping started early. The
possibilities are endless when you’re surrounded by a bunch
of free thinker movers and shakers. The Festival is held 10am
to 4pm both days, and you’ll find vendors lined up and down
Northeast Fourth Avenue. So dust off that hat and go outside!
White wine tastes better after a leisurely jaunt while looking
at art, don’t you agree? Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561)
746-6615 for more information.
Rice is the center of my carb-loving life, and it’s even better
with soy sauce and some raw fish. Let’s roll! September is
National Rice Month and as if you need any encouragement
to indulge in sushi, sashimi, curry and rolls galore, you now have it.
Lemongrass Asian Bistro has been dishing out the freshest Asian
cuisine for the past 10-plus years and the team knows the secret to
enjoyable dishes. Start your rice extravaganza with the Spicy Tuna
Crispy Rice with spicy tuna and jalapenos, served on top of bitesize
crispy sushi rice and garnished with black tobiko for $12. Move
right along to the Pacific Roll, made with spicy tuna, cucumber, and
topped with seared wahoo, red tobiko, chopped raw onions, fried
shallots, micro wasabi greens and a special Japanese yuzu sauce for
$16, or the Florida Roll, with tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado and
topped with dynamite seafood for $14. Then, relax the waistband
before digging into the Lemongrass Fried Rice, with egg, chicken,
beef, shrimp, calamari, onions, scallions and peas for $15. But, you
can’t consider this rice rundown complete until you enjoy the offthe-charts-good
Red Curry, which is red curry paste, coconut milk,
sweet peas, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, zucchini
and basil for $15. Lemongrass
Asian Bistro open for lunch,
happy hour and dinner,
and is located at 420 E.
Atlantic Ave. Visit www.
As crazy as it sounds, New Year’s Eve and the fretting of
New Year’s goals is on the horizon. If you’ve got your
goals all in order, that’s great for you. If you fell a little
short of the “I want to be my own boss/I want to find a job I
actually like/I want to be more challenged by
my job by the end of the year” there’s
still time to get on track. September
is Update Your Resume Month
and is a great time to update
the Word doc with your accomplishments
and goals so you’re
ready when opportunity strikes.
If you’re a little bogged down
with the whole idea of change, the
good people at the Delray Beach
Public Library have you covered.
They’re offering an Empowerment
Zone on Thursday, September 5 from 1
to 4:30pm where they provide assistance
with resumes, job applications, online
government services and online learning.
Even if you just polish your job
hunt skills, or talk to the course leaders
about where you’d like to get to professionally
and the steps to get there, it’s a great
opportunity to take the first leap for happiness.
Hey, rent a book while you’re there, too, and get
in one more good read before the end of the year!
The Delray Beach Public Library is located at 100
W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.delraylibrary.org or
call (561) 266-0194 for more information.
If your desire is Chopin but your
level is Chopsticks, it’s best to
leave the keys to the professionals.
September is National Piano
Month and, lucky for us, there’s a
spot in Delray where you can enjoy
fine piano music in a great environment
with plenty of people watching
(may or may not be correlated
with martini consumption). Orson
Whitfield jams out on the piano every
Friday and Saturday nights from
8:30pm to 12:30am at the Atlantic Grille and you’re invited
to sit back, relax and enjoy the tunes, or cut the rug in your
I-should-wear-these-more-often dancing shoes. If you have
time before the music starts, take advantage of the Grille’s
amazing happy hour with $4 house wines, draft beer and well
cocktails, $6 Svedka martinis and reduced-priced appetizers.
There’s plenty of room at the bar where you can unwind but
still see the dance stage, or grab a high top table and make
some new friends with the locals. It’ll be an enjoyable night
with jazz, classics and recent hits, and you can even finish it
off by walking to the beach and cooling off your dancing shoes
in the ocean. The Atlantic Grille is located inside The Seagate
Hotel, 1000 E. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.theatlanticgrille.com or
13-29 Man of La Mancha – Miguel
de Cervantes, aging and an utter failure
in his varied careers as playwright,
poet and tax collector, sits in a Seville
dungeon with his manservant, awaiting
trial by the Spanish Inquisition for an
prisoners set up a mock trial: if Cervantes
is found guilty, he will hand over
all his possessions. Cervantes agrees to
do so and offers his defense in the form
of a play. Producing a makeup kit, he
transforms himself into an old man who
calls himself Don Quixote de La Mancha
and with his ‘squire’ Sancho Panza, sets
out to find adventure to restore the age
of chivalry, to battle evil, and to right all
► IT Chapter Two The highly anticipated sequel to the new IT
movie released in 2017. This continues that story, now 27 years
later, re-uniting the “Losers Club” of Derry and bringing back the
insanely creepy clown. They’ve all grown up and moved away,
until a devastating phone call brings them back. Damaged by the
experiences of their past, they must each conquer their deepest fears
to destroy Pennywise once and for all...putting them directly in the
path of the clown that has become deadlier than ever.
September 13
► The Goldfinch is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s globally
acclaimed bestseller of the same name, which won the 2014 Pulitzer
Prize for Fiction and spent more than 30 weeks on The New York
Times Best Sellers list. Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort)
was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his
life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention
and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to
one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting
of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.
► Hustlers follows a crew of savvy former
strip club employees who band together to turn
the tables on their Wall Street clients.
The film was inspired by the article
published by New York Magazine
entitled “The Hustlers at Scores”
written by Jessica Pressler. Hustlers is
directed by American screenwriter /
filmmaker Lorene Scafaria. Starring
Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia
Stiles, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, Cardi
B and Lizzo.
of the solar system to find his missing
father. Twenty years after his dad left on
a one-way mission to Neptune to find
signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence,
Roy McBride travels throughout
our solar system to find him and
understand why his mission failed.
He uncovers extraordinary secrets
which challenge the nature of
human existence and our place
in the cosmos. This also stars
Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga,
and Donald Sutherland.
► Downton Abbey The feature film continues the story that
began on the beloved TV series following the Crawley family and the
servants who worked for them at the beginning of the 20th century
in an Edwardian English country house. The show originally ended
in 2015 after six ‘series’ but will continue now four years later. The
original series cast has returned: Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery,
Allen Leech, Elizabeth McGovern, Tuppence Middleton, Brendan
Coyle, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Bonneville, David Haig, Joanne
Froggatt, Phyllis Logan, and Laura Carmichael.
► Rambo: Last Blood Almost four decades after he drew first
blood, Sylvester Stallone is back as one of the greatest action heroes
of all time, John Rambo. Now, Rambo must confront his past and
unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission.
A deadly journey of vengeance, RAMBO: LAST BLOOD marks the last
chapter of the legendary series.
► Abominable When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her
apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous
friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert
Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an
epic quest to reunite the magical creature
with his family at the highest point on
Earth. But the trio of friends will have to
stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a
wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and
zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help
Everest get home.
► Judy Winter 1968 and showbiz legend
Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London
to perform a five-week sold-out run at The
Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she
shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz,
but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic
intensity has only grown. As she prepares
for the show, battles with management,
charms musicians and reminisces with
friends and adoring fans, her wit and
warmth shine through. Even her dreams
of love seem undimmed as she embarks
on a whirlwind romance with Mickey
Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband.
Featuring some of her best-known
songs, the film celebrates the voice, the
capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz
of “the world’s greatest entertainer.”
I’ll Be Right There: A
Guidebook for Adults
Caring for Their Aging
Parents
by Fern Pessin
Released July 2019
When we talk about our bucket list, we focus
on the things we want to do before
we die. What about the list of things we DON’T
want to happen as we start to age? What do we
call THAT list?
“I’ll Be Right There” is a guidebook for adult
children caring for their aging parents—during
what can be an emotionally charged and challenging
time.
The stories, information, worksheets, and resources
in “I’ll Be Right There” will clarify what
you already know and provide you with what
you absolutely need to know, for each stage of
your parents’ aging.
In every page I offer what I’ve learned as a
daughter called into service by her family, to
help you navigate the rough waters of parental
caregiving. Everything from communication, to
financial and legal strategies, to managing mental
and physical health challenges is covered—
just like we are having a conversation.
I believe the hardest part of caregiving is
knowing what to do and when for the people
we love. Working through this book will give
you the confidence, and peace of mind, knowing
you CAN handle this!
Kiss Me, Swami: The
Spiritual Education of
a Beauty Queen
by Kathalynn Turner Davis
Released September 3rd
It seemed all she had to do was show up.
Kathalynn Turner Davis ditched beauty
pageants for Hollywood, finding herself in the
living rooms, nightclubs, sound stages, and
lives of some of the era’s hottest celebs, including
the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself. After a
successful debut as a movie actress (hailed by
critics as “the Judy Holliday of the ‘70s”) she
set out for New York City to study under the
renowned Stella Adler. That chapter—which included
a marriage, babies, divorce, and a foray
into the world of self-actualization—unfolded
within the walls of the famed Dakota, next
door to “The Maestro,” Leonard Bernstein, and
John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Next came a new
husband and the challenging role of suburban
“Stepford wife.”
Eventually, Kathalynn enrolled in Columbia
University and achieved a master’s degree in
social work, which led her down a path of service,
reigniting her passion for spiritual growth.
Her quest for answers to life’s eternal questions
took her to India and Israel, where she found
herself face to face with the swami within.
Why Meadow Died:
The People and
Policies That Created
the Parkland Shooter
and Endanger
America’s Students
by Andrew Pollack, Max Eden, ForeWOrd
by Hunter pOLLACK
Released September 10th
The Parkland school shooting was the most
avoidable mass murder in American history.
And the policies that made it inevitable are being
forced into public schools across America.
“After my sister Meadow was murdered at
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the
media obsessed for months about the type of
rifle the killer used. It was all clickbait and politics,
not answers or justice. That wasn’t good
enough for us. My dad is a real tough guy, but
Meadow had him wrapped around her little finger.
He would do anything she wanted, and she
would want him to find every answer so that
this never happens again.
My dad teamed up with one of America’s
leading education experts to launch his own investigation.
We found the answers to the questions
the media refused to ask. Questions about
school safety that go far beyond the national
gun debate. And the answers to those questions
matter for parents, teachers, and schoolchildren
nationwide.
If one single adult in the Broward County
school district had made one responsible decision
about the Parkland shooter, then my sister
would still be alive. But every bad decision they
made makes total sense once you understand
the district’s politically correct policies, which
started here in Broward and have spread to
thousands of schools across America.” —Hunter
Pollack, “Foreword”
Summer’s Promise
by Barbara Cameron
Can she leave everything she knows for love?
Summer Carson has lived near the Amish
community in Paradise, Pennsylvania, all her
life. Now she’s following in her father’s footsteps
and earning her degree in agricultural science
so she can continue his work helping local
farmers.
In her job at the county extension office,
Summer moves between the Englisch and the
Amish worlds. While she sometimes finds herself
speaking--and even thinking--in Pennsylvania
Deitsch, the transition isn’t always easy.
But what has come naturally to Summer is her
attraction to one of the farmers: Abram Yoder
is handsome, steady, and hardworking. He’s
everything so many of the Englisch men she
knows are not. And Summer quickly realizes
that she’s caught his eye as well.
Can Summer give up the comforts she’s always
known for a life with this Amish man? And
is Abram willing to let her try?
health & beauty | pain relief
By dr. john conde
How To Fix That
“Pain In The Neck”
Neck pain can be, well, a “pain in the neck.” It is estimated that
10% of Americans (that’s 30,500,496 people!) are currently
suffering from neck pain. The traditional treatment prescribed
by physicians utilizing pain relievers, muscle relaxants, rest,
and possible soft collar application is no longer the acceptable
standard of care as this regimen only produces symptomatic relief.
According to a landmark report furnished by the Task Force
on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders (which can be
found in the peer reviewed medical journal Spine), some of
the most effective treatments for neck pain include manipulation,
mobilization, massage, and exercise. In addition, cutting-edge research
is exposing the benefits of brain-based therapeutic exercises
for the relief and prevention of neck pain due to the brain’s intimate
control of neck muscles.
The neck is the most dynamic part of the spine. Its main functions
are to protect the spinal cord, provide the foundation for the
skull, and act as a bridge connecting the skull with the rest of the
body. However, it has to be flexible enough to allow movement in
six different planes. This makes the neck the most vulnerable
region of the spine to injury. It is lined with a high
concentration of compression sensitive sensors
(joint mechanoreceptors), which when triggered
provide a high powered stimulation to the brain
which is essential for its health. The small muscles
which surround the neck play a large role in
the overall health of the neck. Reflexes generated
in these muscles in response to stretch relay
through a certain part of the brain termed the
cerebellum which then fire back to keep these same
muscles strong. As a result, brain-based therapies
geared towards the cerebellum produce amazing results
concerning the overall stability of the neck.
The most common neck complaints involve
three distinct structures: the disc, the
posterior joints of the spine also known as
the facet joints, and the soft tissue regions
including the ligaments and tendons surrounding
the spine. Injury to the discs
which are found between the vertebrae
and act as shock absorbers will produce
moderate to severe neck pain with associated
pain into the arm and hand. The pain may be relieved momentarily
with elevation of the affected arm over the head. Facet
joint injuries will also manifest as neck and arm pain but may start
without an offensive behavior like a trauma and will typically produce
pain down the outer arm into the hand. Lastly, soft tissue injury
will normally produce localized pain with severe restriction of
movement. Nausea and headache may accompany the pain. This is
commonly found after motor vehicle accidents.
Many new, advanced therapies are combining physical medicine
such as mobilization exercises, stretch/strengthening exercises,
myofascial release, traction, decompression, and nutrition with
brain-based exercises targeting the cerebellum region
of the brain. This approach not only focuses
on the neck structures themselves but also the regions
of the brain that control the deep intrinsic
muscles of the neck producing greater stability.
Stop hurting and start living.
health & beauty | dermatology
By Jennifer Wilson, MSN, ARNP, NP-C
Threads Are Getting A Lift
Instead of reaching for an injectable filler or scalpel, skilled cosmetic
providers are artistically reshaping faces with a minimally invasive
approach that provides a naturally restored result. Absorbable lifting
sutures are a technological evolution offering men and women an
alternative solution to the universal problem of sagging aged skin.
Becoming increasingly popular are the latest threads called Eurothreads,
which are self dissolving sutures made of biodegradable
polydioxone commonly known as PDO and PLLA which is
Poly-L-Lactic Acid also known as Sculptra. The beauty of threads is
that they can be used to lift sagging tissue and tighten the skin using
a nonsurgical approach. The FDA approved material can also be used
to volumize, smooth and contour areas of the midface and body with
little downtime. What makes Eurothreads unique from other typical
dissolvable sutures is that they have expanded their thread options to
52 | september 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
help treat the body such as lifting arms, sagging skin above the knees,
and even buttocks. Smaller threads can be placed in the face and body
to help create collagen and elastin to rebuild the structure and support
of the skin which in return volumizes and corrects imperfections
such as wrinkles and acne scars. Eurothreads have also been made
with specific material such as PLLA to stimulate even more collagen
production than other threads on the market.
The lifting threads have small bi-directional cones or barbs on them
so when placed under the skin the tissue can be maneuvered onto
the thread causing it to “lift.” The threads hold the tissue in place and
causes inflammation to stimulate collagen over time. As the thread
gets reabsorbed the collagen and elastin that was formed will be left
behind. This type of technology not only lifts instantly but then gets
better over the next 12 weeks as collagen is being formed. It provides
a more natural contoured look without the over-filled appearance
that you may get from the overuse of dermal fillers.
Smaller threads can be placed into areas such as the lips to give
a natural enhancement that slightly plumps and redefines your lips.
They also can be placed in areas that have wrinkles or divots in the
skin to build back up the tissue for a smoother appearance such as
smoker’s lines around the mouth, smile lines, cellulite and also acne
scars. When placed in the décolleté or arms that have crêpe thin skin
it is amazing to see how quickly thicker and smoother begins to develop.
Blunt tip threads have been designed by Eurothreads to be
safely inserted in the tear trough all the way up to the lash line to
rebuild the lost tissue or hallowing under the eyes.
A thread lift treatment takes about 30 - 45 minutes to complete and
the recovery is about one to two days. There is typically no bruising
with possible swelling. Mild discomfort can be experienced for up to
two weeks. Results will vary but can last from 18 months to two years
and possibly longer due to the collagen formation.
Eurothreads can be used in combination with fillers, lasers,
and other anti-aging treatments to provide an overall enhancement
and reverse the signs of aging. Rebuilding the
skin’s foundation elements such as elastin and collagen
are the key factors in naturally restoring youth.
health & beauty | body beautiful
By ashley sica-de souza
Surgery No,
Transformation YES!
Thinking about the latest and greatest procedure to change
the shape of your body? Well I’m here to help you question
your decision before you put down that credit card. And I’m not
talking about enhancing your bosom for a perkier look (I’ll be
the first to tell you to go for that), I’m talking about liposuction,
fat transfers, booty implants… all the procedures that promise
a brand new you, and give you the look you always wanted.
Sure, a shortcut seems appealing and
ideal to some, or maybe a lot…but you
may want to think twice before going
under the knife. I’m not against all surgeries,
there are people that have excess skin,
and many that have tried everything (and
tried it the right way) but still need a little
extra help. However, there are some unnecessary
procedures, and what may follow
after choosing them:
1. Regret
There are so many clients that regret having
surgery. After it’s done, there is (usually)
no going back. Or even worse, is when a client
does go back to get something fixed and
it comes out worse. Before going back ask
yourself: “Is this my last resort? Have I tried
everything else? Would I really need lipo if
I just cleaned up my diet? Do I really need
booty implants? What if I did all the right exercises,
even if it took me 2-3 years?”
2. Longevity of results
Sure, you might look like a hot tamale for a
quick minute but if you don’t have the foundation
of a healthy lifestyle, the results will
not last. There are many people that get liposuction
and then gained it all back! Imagine
spending all that time, money and risks only
to gain it all back. How can anyone believe
they can continue eating poorly and the fat
would never come back? Now that would be
54 | september 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
a true miracle! Learning how to eat and exercise
correctly will give results that will last.
It may not be the quick fix you were hoping
for, but you will really appreciate the results
once you get there.
3. The bad fat
Cosmetic surgery does not get rid of the
dangerous visceral fat that sticks around
the organs. This type of fat can lead to
heart disease, diabetes and obesity. So, if
you think that after surgery you will become
a “healthier” version of yourself,
think again. Once again, everything leads
back to diet and exercise. It’s not a quick
fix, but one that will help you live healthier,
stronger and longer.
4. Undesired results
This goes along with regret mentioned
above – many clients that had various procedures
are truly unhappy with the outcome
for one reason or another. Dimpled bellies,
drooping derriere implants, infected areas,
boxy shapes, etc. Most desired results are attainable
through eating clean and the right
exercises. You may not achieve a booty like
Kim Kardashian, but do you really want one?
If so, then understand that the results are
not always as promised, and you have to be
prepared to deal with the aftermath.
Hopefully you will think twice before going
for the knife. But always do what makes
you the happiest! Just research what you’re
really getting in to before you do so, and
know that there are non-surgical ways to
achieve similar long lasting results if you’re
willing to make a commitment!
Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament
25th Annual Mark Gerretson
Memorial Fishing Tournament
By Jim Gerretson
The Captain’s meeting was held on August 8th at the Delray Beach
Elks Lodge. 19 boats entered into the tournament this year. Lots
of great prizes were given away and a significant amount of money
was raised for the various charities that the tournament supports.
This year’s winners of the MGMFT Tournament are:
The weigh-in was held at Veterans Park, on August 10th.
Some very nice fish were brought to the weigh-in. It was
also clear that the local population of sharks were celebrating
Shark Week, as numerous anglers reported donating
their fish to the sharks as they were being reeled in. The weather
stayed very calm until the later afternoon. As always we had
great prizes donated by our fantastic supporters and sponsors. A
memorial for Deena Chapman, Mark’s sister, who was a long time
committee member and passed in January was held on Sunday.
The tournament was started by Mark Gerretson as the Delray
Beach Jaycees Fishing Tournament to raise money for the Delray
Police’s Kids and Cops program. Mark ran the tournament for 11
years before he passed in 2005. At that time, his friends and family
made a promise to keep the tournament going, and to continue
to raise money for a variety of charities that support the Delray
Beach Community. In 2016, the tournament became a 501(c)3
non-profit organization. All committee members are volunteers.
The committee works throughout the year to plan the tournament,
identify worthy causes, and disburse the money to those
in need. Over the years the tournament has raised over $150,000
for local charities and provided help and hope to many children
and families during tough times.
The committee members are: Tim Knapp (Chairman), Patricia
Gerretson (Marks mom), Keith Kern, Gary (Falcon) Musial, Jen
Buce, Paul Shersty, Chris Reich, Jim Gerretson, and Brittany Gerretson
Roberts.
Next year is the 26th Annual of the tournaments founding, and
we’re already working on plans to have bigger prizes and more
boats entered. We are counting on the community to help spread
the word and help us benefit the Delray Beach Community. We
are looking for additional committee members to help us continue
the work that the tournament has been doing. If you are
interested and can help with advertising the tournament, working
the tournament, talking to sponsors, or in other ways, please
ALLYSON SULLIVAN
Passion And Excellence
In Delray Real Estate
BY diane feen | PHOTOS BY gina sullo
There’s only one thing that
Allyson Sullivan loves more
than Delray Beach – and that’s
selling real estate. The Boston
native came to Delray Beach and
declared it “Love at first sight.”
“It was my love for Delray Beach - and the vibe of South Florida
- that caused me to come here and call Delray Beach my home.
I fell in love with the unique cultural flare that this charming
beach community offers - the architecture, the palm trees, the pristine
beaches, and especially the tropical weather,” said Sullivan, a top selling
realtor for Lang Realty in East Delray Beach.
60 | september 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Sullivan is also bullish about buying a home or condo instead of renting.
She advises young people to think of home ownership as a great
investment for your future with great tax benefits. “It’s a great idea to
pay off some of your mortgage in advance because a lot of it is interest
the first 10 to 15 years. That way you build more equity and paying off
your mortgage early is a fabulous step toward financial freedom.”
Another word to the wise when it comes to creating wealth – according
to Sullivan – is to buy investment property. She advises finding
property that has a positive cash flow (because cash flow is a no
brainer she said). Sullivan suggests finding a good real estate agent
you can trust to advise you about what to invest in and where to invest.
“There are some great opportunities to buy in our area. You can’t count
on social security to survive when you retire.”
Retiring is far from Sullivan’s mind right now. She is steeped in her
real estate career, and helping others reach their financial and domestic
dreams. “I believe the recipe for a success story includes a strong and consistent
track record of integrity, honesty, reliability and a lot of hard work.
According to clients Sullivan is doing just that.
“Allyson is one of the nicest, hardest working, professional, and
knowledgeable realtors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I’m
glad I met Allyson, who has brought a wealth of knowledge to me about
all real estate matters. If you’re reading about her now, stop where you
are because you already made the right decision. Allyson is the right
choice to handle, list or purchase real estate for you,” said Alex.
Sullivan has earned all the accolades she has incurred. She has
worked very hard to establish her brand the past 18 years and is always
thinking of ways to help clients. She knows that good relationships and
real estate transactions are not a one-size-fits-all solution. And the results
show her inventive and consistent approach is working.
COPYRIGHTED

Just ask Dina Branham, Broker at Deluxe Properties in Delray
Beach. “Allyson is one of the hardest working agents in the area.
She is also one of the most awarded. As a local real estate broker
myself (in the same area), I have a great amount of respect for her
discipline and professionalism. It would be my pleasure to work
with her on a property or client she represents. I congratulate her
on all of her success.”
Success is a variable term and one that most professionals take
pride in. Sullivan is not shy about crediting her success to constantly
reinventing herself, staying current, and thinking outside
the box. To be successful in real estate, she says, one must also be
a people-person with a relatable personality, extremely creative
and resourceful.
Well put.
Staying on top is also an intricate process, but it comes natural to
this Delray “go-getter.” “I knew selling real estate was perfect for me. I
needed the flexibility of working for myself, setting my own schedule,
and having no limits when it comes to growing my own business.”
And grow it she has – beyond her initial dream. “When I came
to Delray Beach I knew I had found a utopian landscape. The
streets of Delray are lined with tourists that dream of owning
a piece of the same paradise that I am fortunate enough to call
home 365 days a year. I am always enthusiastic to accommodate
them! I wake up every day and pinch myself because I get to do
one of the things I love best – sell real estate in the most amazing
location in the country!”
Sullivan also has some hints on how to spruce up your home for
minimal cost. She advises sellers to make sure the landscaping is
inviting and attractive – especially the backyard. “A great backyard
can sell a home!”
She also suggests getting stylish window treatments – whether
plantation shutters, accent curtains or light colored blinds. “You
want the house to be light,” she adds.
And lastly she has a wise word of advice to sellers. “Hiring a
realtor is a good investment, not an expense. A good realtor adds
value to a home and gives you good advice. Find someone who is
a full-time realtor who knows their stuff.”
Porsche Parade
The 64th Annual Porsche Parade
62 | september 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
written and photographed BY tom craig
COPYRIGHTED
For seven days, the Boca Raton
Resort and Club was home to the
64th Annual Porsche Parade.
The Parade is the annual national
convention of the Porsche Club
of America. The first parade
was held in 1956 with a total
of 64 entrants. This year 2000
participants and 800 Porsches
were registered for the event.
The last time the parade was in
our area was the 13th Annual in
Palm Beach Shores in 1968.

Members, enthusiasts and Porsche fans came from all over
North America for this weeklong event. I met a gentleman
from Wisconsin who drove his 1976 Porsche 911 down
for the event. He stopped in Tennessee and picked up his brother
to join him on the journey. After the event, they were headed to Key
West to put the car in front of the Southernmost Point marker for
a photo and take in the sights before heading home. He told me he
has been to 40 of the 48 contiguous states in his 911.
This year’s Parade activities included the Concours, autocross,
time-speed-distance and gimmick rallies, destination tours, and
more. The Concours was set up over several of the resort’s golf
course fairways as well as a historical Porsche exhibit in one of the
ballrooms. The selection of Porsches on display was wide and varied.
From the 1950s to 2019, from basic to advanced, from street to
race winners, something for everyone. Besides entrants, representatives
from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, and from Porsche Cars
North America also attended, along with numerous automotive-related
vendors, spokespeople and sponsors.
Adding to the excitement this year was Porsche unveiling two
new models for 2020, the 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 and the 2020
Porsche 718 Spyder. An enthusiastic roar of applause came over the
room as the covers were pulled away and a scramble ensued to get
a closer look and take the first pictures. Another interesting observation
was the amount of younger adult members in attendance at
the parade. The Porsche Club of America has college age and junior
member programs and encourages their attendance and participation
in the events as well.
Overall this was a fantastic event that was comprised of events all
over the county and beyond. Hopefully the Porsche Club of America
was pleased with The Boca Resort as a venue for their event and
returns soon.
THE SILVERBALL MUSEUM
Fun, Food And Fantasy
BY diane feen | photos by melissa korman
You don’t have to be a Pinball
Wizard to enjoy the miracles
and memories at the
Silverball Museum in Delray.
Enter a world of Fun at Silverball Musuem
Most everyone who goes there has a story. They either lived
near an arcade or spent time playing the very same pinball
machines that are now part of history, yet intact at the
Silverball Museum.
There is a time and place for everything. That’s why people flock
to The Silverball Museum for a reprieve from reality or a respite
from the routine. There are few places that delight the senses and
challenge eye-hand coordination like Silverball does.
You can have a ball, literally, at this simulated boardwalk trip
down Nostalgia lane. They have 9,000-square-feet of arcade and
boardwalk fun. There are 120 games that include vintage Pinball
machines, Arcade Games, Skee Ball, Basketball, Video games and
table shuffleboard.
Each game has its origin displayed so you can revel in its historical
roots. The Skee Ball is so much fun you might find eight-yearold
kids playing alongside 80-year-old grandparents (who for that
short time often feel as if they’re eight again).
But like every pretty face, there is more to the picture than meets
the eye. They also have a restaurant and retro bar that serves wonderful
food and a full selection of libations.
You can’t beat their Happy Hour menu that will have you dancing
in the aisles (this is the kind of place you can do that without worrying
that you will be escorted out by the grown-ups).
The Happy Hour Menu is in full swing from 11am to 7pm Monday
to Friday. For a mere $6 you can get a juicy burger with fries
or chicken sandwich. If you would rather indulge in a pizza, meatball
parmesan appetizer or Caesar salad it will set you back $5. The
prices at this festive culinary side car of desire are about as nostalgic
as the machines themselves. And, the best part is the food is
great, not mediocre bar or fast food.
Silverball is also the perfect place for a party. It’s one thing to
throw a party and another to ensure your guests enjoy themselves.
It’s a veritable win-win at this festive feast of games, food, music,
nostalgia and drinks.
They have hosted parties for an established real estate company
in Delray Beach, a local city employee, charitable fundraisers and
corporate events. It’s also the perfect place for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs,
Birthday Parties, Sports and Football Parties, Anniversaries,
Club or Business meetings and Reunions.
Everyone agrees that Silverball is the perfect party place. “Let me
just say that last nights’ party was amazing!!! From the band,
to the waitstaff, to the food, everything was on point and everyone
had a wonderful time. Thank you for taking such good
care of us. We will definitely be back,” said one city employee.
Last month Edwin and wife Kristin Santoni had their annual
feast of fun and friendship upstairs in the Boat Bar Room. The
Santoni’s invite their friends (who dress up in Star Wars garb
and visit sick children in hospitals) for an afternoon of camaraderie,
fun, food and games. “We love the pinball and arcade
games we grew up playing. The food is always good, and we
look forward to coming here each year. We love the air hockey
and enjoy the nostalgia and pinball machines,” said Edwin.
Cristy Moran couldn’t agree more. The Jupiter mom takes
a “mom-cation” each year with her friends, and this year they
chose Delray Beach. “I love it here, we love playing skee ball
and all the machines. It’s the perfect place for us because there
are so many terrific things to do.”
There sure are. You can rent out the entire Silverball Museum,
the second floor Kiss Lounge, Boat Bar or the entire
second floor. They will supply food and drinks depending on
your needs.
The Silverball Museum is also the perfect place for lunch. It
can change a sour mood in a nanosecond, and uplift you into
the fantasy world that it so embraces.
There is other good news. Silverball just added a 14-foot
projection screen and new 72-inch TV’s to showcase sporting
events. “We are screening college and NFL games of all Miami
teams that are local and national,” said Dayna DiDomenico, Silverball
Museum General and Events Manager.
With the addition of the large screens for sporting events,
Silverball has something for everyone. They also have a “Back
to School Special” running through September. Bring your
school schedule and you can play for a discounted rate of $10
per person for an All Day Re-Entry Pass (for up to four people).
One thing for sure, Silverball makes everyone smile. You can
be young at heart or young in years. Either way, you can never
have too much fun in life.
Proper Ice Cream
Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
With Chef Made Flavors
BY Nicol Jenkins | photos by melissa korman
The moment you walk through the doors of
Proper Ice Cream, you are transported to an
ice cream shop unlike any other.
From the colorful graffiti mural on the side of the building
to the menu of over 200 chef made flavors of ice cream to
choose from, Proper Ice Cream in Delray Beach is two scoops
above the rest.
Owner and chef Rickey Felberbaum serves up an assortment of
ice cream creations from the Blueberry Muffin and Key Lime Pie to
the Honeycomb or Glazed Donut. Some favorites are the Chocolate
Cookie Dough Ice Cream, Bread Pudding and sorbets. They even have
flavored ice cream cones, milkshakes, sundaes, tarts, lots of toppings,
and a hot ice cream sandwich. You won’t be able to tell the difference
while sampling their full line of vegan ice cream and sorbets.
The ice cream is homemade fresh every day with only natural
ingredients, 20% less sugar and zero additives.
“The mission is to never use any chemicals or artificial ingredients,
and to never process with air,” said Rickey.
The owner’s passion for crafting delicious ice cream and sorbets
turned into his desire to perfect the best ice cream. Traveling around
Europe, Italy and even Manhattan, Rickey who was an attorney at
the time, would visit ice cream shops and wonder why the ice cream
wasn’t as good in many ice cream shops in the US. He decided to take
68 | september 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
the next step by attending ice cream school at Penn State University
training with award winning gelato chefs. Rickey also worked
alongside Chef Clay Conley at Buccan restaurant in Palm Beach. He
decided to share his expertise by creating desserts for high-end restaurants
and then opening ice cream shops in Delray Beach.
“At Penn State University I learned which ingredients make ice
cream pure, dense and light. I also spent time working in many
kitchens and met gelato chefs all over the world. It started as a hobby
and then it evolved into us providing ice cream and sorbets for
select high-end restaurants, then I decided what if we take the front
of our kitchen and start selling it retail to people and see what happens.
It became very popular, and we needed to look for another
location,” said Rickey.
Proper Ice Cream offers the perfect setting for a date night, a
birthday party or a family day out. They have indoor counter seating
and outdoor seating for guests. The restaurant staff and owner
can be seen at many city and charitable events around town. The atmosphere
and ice cream is the perfect sweet treat for Delray Beach.
Proper Ice Cream was recently recognized as the Number 1 restaurant
in Delray Beach by Taste of Recovery Food Show.
“Over the last few years, the City of Delray Beach has
boomed into foodie heaven. There’s a recent influx of very talented
chefs that own and operate or work at local restaurants
who have changed the food scene dramatically. Delray Beach
is a great small town environment with the ability to attract
vacationers, and the locals can not only enjoy great food but
craft made homemade real pure and simple ice cream with no
additives, no air pumped in, and everything is made in house 7
days a week,” said the owner.
The unique ice cream flavors have become such as hit among
first time guests that they soon become regulars. Proper Ice
Cream can also be found on the menu of many popular area
restaurants in Delray Beach, Palm Beach and Broward County.
Pints of your favorite flavors are displayed at the Joseph’s Classic
Market in Boca Raton, Palm Beach Gardens and soon to be
Delray Beach high-end supermarket.
“The first time someone tries our ice cream, it’s like they are
tasting something new. Even though it’s ice cream, it tastes different
than the ice cream people are used to. We don’t use heavy
cream; we use significantly less sugar and only natural ingredients,”
said Rickey.
“This place is amazing. The flavors are done with an amazing
hand that balances the sweet and the salt perfectly. It can
sit in the freezer and it still serves easily with a spoon. The
sweet corn and blueberry was subtle and sweet while the cinnamon
just hits you hard. Everything I’ve had from this place
is amazing and I can’t wait to try it all. The price is 100% appropriate
for the quality. I will be back and I can’t wait to sit
out in the Florida heat enjoying a literally perfect cone of ice
cream,” stated a happy customer.
Why not treat yourself to some Proper Ice Cream! It’s simply
proper, the way it should be.
Did you know that the Delray Beach
Chamber has its own corps of Ambassadors?
BY Stephanie Immelman
Photo by ©Emiliano Brooks / Studio B Squared
Sarah Crane, of the HOW Foundation, explains what the group
does. “The Chamber of Commerce Ambassador program is
a rare opportunity for individuals from diverse business
and personal backgrounds to come together and support not only
Chamber of Commerce operations, but also to support our local
businesses. Each Ambassador has a unique insight and experience
with the Delray Chamber and how it can help promote and grow
businesses. Ambassadors love sharing their knowledge and business
“wins” to help pay it forward and support others. They are a
wonderful group, and I consider myself blessed to be among them.”
“We can always count on our Ambassadors to be there for the
Members or our Board when we need them,” said Noreen Payne, Incoming
Chair and an Ambassador herself. “Ambassadors are there
in a pinch to volunteer during the many events that the Chamber
holds each month. They are the cheering squad for new member
Grand Openings and assist with philanthropic initiatives like collecting
school supplies for the Community or Project Holiday gifts
for soldiers overseas.”
Goddess Of Goodness
Noreen Payne is quietly leaving
an indelible footprint in Delray.
She didn’t plan it that way.
It just sort of happened - organically.
“I don’t like to talk about myself. I was shy growing up, but gradually
came out of my shell,” said the incoming chair of the Delray
Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Like an oyster or a pearl, Payne did more than come out of her
shell. She broke the structure. From a lifetime of volunteerism to
active roles in non-profit organizations, Payne has changed many
lives with her passion and selflessness.
She had good role models. Her mother Kay was an Ambassador
for UNICEF and volunteered for organizations that educated
and fed children. Her father Riaz was an accomplished electrical
engineer (for General Electric) who moved his family around the
globe extensively.
They lived in Buffalo, Chicago, New Orleans, Atlanta, London,
Germany, South America, the Middle East and other places. She
attended three high schools and was often perplexed when people
would call her “too tall, too skinny, too quiet, etc.”
But those days are over. Payne proudly carries her height, her
physique and her station in life. As a matter of fact, she has risen
in stature and hierarchy everywhere she goes.
“Noreen always checks in to make sure our program and volunteer
needs are being met. She not only delivers meals to homebound
clients, but she has arranged to clean up a client’s yard, brought her
children to help clean and organize a client’s home. She is passionate,
has integrity, energy and a team player. Our clients are happy
to see Noreen - she shares a smile and gives them hugs,” said Shona
Castillo, Program Director for The Caring Kitchen.
When Payne moved to Delray from Atlanta she took her two
children (one strapped to her chest and the other in a stroller) to
the Achievement Centers for Children & Families to play with the
children. “When they saw us the kids would get so excited and say,
‘the babies are coming.’”
Payne does know, however, that helping others is not child’s
play; it’s an important component of life. “You have no idea how
many food insecure children there are just blocks away. My passions
are hunger, children and helping others.”
And helping others she does.
She delivers meals for The Caring Kitchen, provides snacks for
children and is involved with Impact 100 Women. She was cochair
for the Achievement Center’s recent Annual Delray Beach
Home Tour, raising a record-breaking amount of money.
Stephanie Seibel, CEO of Achievement Centers, isn’t surprised.
“Noreen is one-of-a-kind. She does whatever she can to further a
good cause. In one day she may go from sitting at the boardroom
table planning an event to sitting on the preschool floor for Delray
Reads, planting a garden with our volunteers and delivering
dinner to the homebound.”
The wife, mother, volunteer and real estate agent enjoys flying
under the radar, which is why she doesn’t relish the idea of talking
about herself. But, true to her selfless nature, she’s compliant
to a fault. “I want to show some love for my non-profits – they’re
amazing and need help.”
Helping others is something that tugs on Payne’s heartstrings.
It’s what she was trained to do by familial osmosis, and is something
she takes seriously. Her date book is so filled it looks like
a daily flight log at JFK, and her days are so structured it would
make a free spirit break out in hives.
But her past often inspires her present. “We moved so often that
my mother was always calling the Chamber of Commerce in each
city. She would call and ask for a doctor, a dentist, a contractor, etc.”
That may account for her devotion to the Delray Beach Chamber.
She was Ambassador Chair, Vice Chair of Membership, Vice Chair of
Programming, Director of the Year and incoming Chairperson.
Though she enjoys anonymity, Jim Chard (Vice Chair of the
Chamber) isn’t bashful about singing her praises. “Noreen is arguably
the hardest working person in Delray. She is one of the
best realtors in the City, and still manages the time to be on the
board of some of the most significant not-for-profits in the City.
As incoming Chair of the Chamber we will surely benefit from
her energy, ideas, charm, and ever-present smile.”
Payne was a finalist for the Ken Ellingsworth Community Service
Award and The Ricard Ohrstrom Community Service Award.
But it’s not awards she is seeking. It’s about building and
serving community. When her husband Lee was transferred
to DC, Payne re-created the Delray Beach experience in Round
Hill, Virginia. She volunteered for their Home Town Event, adding
a Christmas Tree Lighting with Santa, Movies in the Park,
food and other fun things. It grew from 12 families participating
to hundreds.
Lee Payne took note of her uniqueness at first glance. “When I
was working at a bank in Atlanta, this tall blond man walked up to
me and asked, “What are you doing for the next 60 years?”
Though she was shy and ignored him, karma and happenstance
resulted in their union. They have been married 31 years and have
two children, 20-year-old Alia and 22-year-old Kamran.
When not making the world a better place Payne can be found
selling property. Like volunteering, real estate is part of her heritage.
“I always wanted to be in real estate because we moved so often.
My mom took me house hunting every time we moved. Memories
were created in our homes, and now I can help others do that.”
Her friend and partner (from All About Florida Homes Team)
Amy Snook fulfills that role with her. “Noreen is more selfless than
anyone I’ve known. She never wants attention for her good deeds
and never tells her friends what she does. When I can’t find her, it’s
because she is running food to a child or family in need, helping
a veteran, or checking in on an elderly person who doesn’t have
family. She has the biggest heart.”
Pizza Valentina
Scuola Vecchia
Owner Sharon Aloisio bought (and shipped to Delray) the
wood burning oven made of volcanic stone that heats to
1000 degrees. She was one of the first restauranteurs to
make Caputo flour pizza dough taste light as a feather and imported
Italian San Marzano tomato sauce melt in your mouth.
She also imported the wisdom, culinary excellence and 200-year-old
Neapolitan pizza-making skills from the master, Roberto Caporuscio.
And she did it with precision and dedication.
The results were stunning. People came from all over to savor the
flavors and texture of real Neapolitan pizza and homemade pasta
that Sharon cooked up.
It was a unique dining experience, and one that Aloisio adhered
to strictly. She followed the tradition of the masters in Italy and so
did her fans – that included locals, out of towners and the media.
The menu grew and so did their expertise. Everyone seemed to
notice. “This is the best pizza anywhere. There is true integrity in
Scuola Vecchia
The True Essence Of
Eating Italian Pizza
When Scuola Vecchia opened it
was a sensational new experience
that only those who lived in
Naples, Italy would understand.
COPYRIGHTED
what they’re doing here. I eat here once a week,” said Reny Hodan,
owner of a popular Delray restaurant nearby.
Hodan isn’t the only one drawn to Scuola Vecchia. Debbie Gansler
and her husband Howard come once a week as well. “We love it
here and have been coming since they opened. We order the Pizza
Margherita and the specials of the day. The white pizza with figs
and gorgonzola cheese is outstanding. I’m Italian and I love the thin
crust, the ingredients and the excellent service.”
Gansler is correct on all counts. The food at Scuola Vecchia is superb
and its authenticity is overwhelmingly delicate and delicious.
We’ve been here before but it seems with age comes perfection
(like wine and wisdom).
Part of the delicate balance of flavors and textures that seduce
the senses are pizzas named after Aloisio’s grandchildren. Luckily
her son – and business partner Shaun – recently had a baby girl. To
honor her birth a pizza was created in her name. Called the Valen-

Pizza Romeo
PIZZAiolo SHAUN!
THE ART OF MAKING
NEAPOLITAN PIZZA
Fettuccine Mediterraneo
tina, this pizza is out of this world. Made with Prosciutto di Parma,
gorgonzola cheese, cherry pesto and mint, it fills your mouth with
flavors and your spirit with delight.
We also adored the Pizza Romeo, named after Shaun’s five-yearold
son (who enjoys making pizza with his dad). This pizza is divinely
made with homemade mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced potatoes,
crispy pancetta and fresh rosemary. The unusual combination
of flavors and ingredients in this pizza make it decadently delicious.
We weren’t the only ones oohing and aahing over this homemade
Italian fare. Local Delray resident (and finance guy) Dave comes to
Scuola Vecchia quite often and was relishing the food as well. “This
is the best pizza. I’ve been coming here since it opened so I don’t
have to go to New York for pizza. I love Sharon and Shaun – they
care about what goes on your plate and it shows.”
You don’t have to be from New York to appreciate the TLC that
goes into the food at Scuola Vecchia. Take the Girella Salad for instance.
It goes like this – Homemade Mozzarella Cheese Rolls are
stuffed with eggplant, zucchini and Prosciutto di Parma and served
with a house salad with balsamic dressing. It is a celebration of texture
and taste that we found intoxicating. It’s so far out of the traditional
salad comfort zone that the flavors and texture just jump
out at you gleefully.
Speaking of glee – you must try their new homemade Italian
Rice Balls. Called Sicilian Arancini they are lightly breaded and
come three to an order - spinach and béchamel, homemade Bolognese
and Prosciutto Cotto (Italian ham) with mozzarella. They are
simply divine with varying flavors that dance with delight in your
mouth. They’re so good it feels illegal. But, of course it’s as legal as
writing your name on a post-it – but much more fun.
The genius behind much of this excellence and expertise is Sharon.
She learned to cook from her grandmother and has carried
this tradition to fruition in her little corner of the world on Atlantic
Avenue. She tries new dishes and is constantly whipping up specials
that makes everyone ecstatically happy. Just look around – it
feels like Neapolitan Nirvana. And it is!
We aren’t the only ones impressed with Scuola Vecchia. The Daily
Meal rated their pizza one of the best in South Florida and Trip Advisor
deemed their Neapolitan tradition the best pizza on the planet.
So does Donna from Delray. “My husband and I have excellent
experiences at Scuola Vecchia. It’s the best pizza in the WORLD! We
always feel like family when we dine there. Anthony, Rita, Sharon
and Sean - what wonderful kind people. The Caprese salad with
their homemade Mozzarella is to die for!”
You bet it is. So is their Fettuccini Bolognese with homemade
meat sauce cooked for three hours to infuse flavor into tomato
sauce cooked in their wood oven. We also recommend the Salad
Mare with fresh baby arugula, jumbo shrimp, grape tomatoes, lemon
and extra virgin olive oil.
Because Scuola Vecchia is a family business they welcome everyone
with the same fanfare. That is why they offer Gluten Free
Pizza made with fresh homemade gluten-free flour (not frozen like
most).
Before you say goodbye to Sharon, Shaun and the devoted staff,
check out their desserts. The Flourless Chocolate Cake would make
a horse whisper and a human covet it like a priceless pearl. We also
suggest the homemade Tiramisu.
Scuola Vecchia has hit its stride. The food is superb, inventive
and homemade with love. Sharon and Shaun are at the epicenter
of all this Italian Culinary Greatness, and they welcome you into
their domain.
We suggest you join them!
dining | RECIPE
Holy Guacamole!!!
INGREDIENTS
3 Hass avocados – peeled, pitted, and mashed
1 Lime juiced
½ Cup diced onion
3 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
2 Plum tomatoes, diced
1 Tsp diced garlic
directions
In a medium bowl mash together avocados,
lime juice, and salt. Mix in the rest of
ingredients. Refrigerate for at least one hour
before serving for best flavor.
In case you were wondering, National
Guacamole Day is Monday, September 16th.
I don’t know about you, but I have a love/
hate relationship with avocado. It’s yummy,
and healthy, and filling, but…if you don’t
buy it when it’s perfect, well, let’s just say it
becomes the opposite of yum – YUCK!
However, this doesn’t stop me from asking
the produce person at any given market
to help me pick my avocados. Guac-ward!
Small price to pay for good Guacamole.
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
Are Eye and Vision Issues in
Pets Becoming an Epidemic?
Eye and vision issues in our pets is becoming an epidemic
with most older pets being affected. The disturbing issue of
this is that these conditions are being accepted as normal
and expected without most caregivers understanding the causes.
Once there is an understanding of the basic causes, most vision
challenges are normally preventable.
All disease comes down to only two core causes, deficiency and
toxicity. These eye and vision challenges are no exception. The real
challenge is that eyes and vision issues are slow to develop and
slow to correct. Unlike skin cells that are replaced on a monthly
basis, nerve and eye tissue are replaced at a much slower rate. Most
eye challenges are explained as degenerative because of this slow
growing condition. The same is true when providing a treatment
plan, as the results often take months to stem the degeneration and
create healing.
Basic eye changes often start with tearing, wet eye and tear
staining which lead to infections. While some breeds of dogs and
cats seem to be more predisposed to this type of condition, the
cause can be a nutritional imbalance and repeated exposure to toxins.
While many eye infections are the result of bacterial, viral or
fungal growth, we have to ask what is wrong with our pet’s immune
system that allows these pathogens to proliferate.
Our approach to attaining optimal health is achieved by building a
strong natural immune system with species specific nutrition and by
reducing the addition of toxins through drugs, vaccines, cleaning products,
lawn chemicals and other toxins. Toxins plug and destroy the cellular
functions in filters such as the liver, kidney and lymphatic systems.
Research has shown that aluminum and mercury have a direct
link to kidney and liver failure which has a direct impact on the eyes.
Why are our dogs having more of these eye problems than our
cats? This is self-evident as we look at the plethora of toxins that
our dogs are exposed to. Most feline pets are house dwellers and
are limited in their exposure to the vast array of environmental
chemicals that our dogs are exposed to. These include the pollutants
in our air and lawn chemicals such as weed killer, bug killers,
fertilizers and more. If those factors are not enough of an assault
on our dogs, we are also told that because our dogs are frequently
outdoors, we need to provide additional protection for them. The
additional protection recommended by many in the veterinarian
community is to increase vaccine schedules, monthly chemical and
drug treatments for fleas, ticks, heartworms and other parasites.
These toxins are continuously destroying healthy cells and teamed
up with an inappropriate nutritional plan, this regimen inhibits
proper growth of new healthy cells.
The good news is this…what degenerates can also regenerate.
The body is designed to heal itself. Our job as pet parents is to provide
the proper tools for that to happen. This happens by us supporting
a clean species specific appropriate nutritional program
that excludes fillers, preservatives, colors and chemicals - along
with creating a safer environment by choosing a more natural
approach for flea and heartworm prevention, lawn treatments,
household cleaners, vaccinations, etc.
