Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in September for $50 or less.
Why did the mushroom
get invited
to all the parties?
Because he’s a fungi!
September is National
Mushroom Month and
is a fantastic time to fall
back in love with all the
fungus varietals you can get
your hands on. Since most of
us don’t have a pig or a forest
to forage, we rely on local stores
or restaurants. If you’d rather eat with ease and have no dishes
to clean, then head to Mellow Mushroom and get your mushroom
high off of their supply. Their menu features tons of mushroomfriendly
dishes, with each better than the next. Start with the Magic
Mushroom soup, which is a rich and creamy soup flavored with
Burgundy wine and herbs, topped with MontAmore and grilled
shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms and fresh chives for
$4.79. Then ease into the Brutus Salad, which is an elevated Caesar
salad with kalamata olives, grilled Portobello mushrooms, roasted
red peppers, roma tomatoes and feta cheese for $10.59. For the
pièce de résistance, sink your teeth into the Holy Shiitake Pie that
features shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized
onions, mozzarella and MontAmore cheese, a garlic aioli swirl, a
spritz of black truffle oil, fresh chives and parmesan ($12.99 for a
small). So have a fun time, fungi, and get your schroom on. Mellow
Mushroom is located at 25 SE Sixth Ave. Visit www.mellowmushroom.com
We should be getting over the dog days of summer, which
means that it’s time to get back outside! September is
Fall Hat Month and while it might not yet feel like Fall,
we can at least don a hat to protect us from the Florida heat. But
where to go, you ask? Downtown for the 25th Annual Downtown
Delray Beach Craft Festival! Held Saturday, September 21 and Sunday,
September 22, you’re invited to peruse the craftiness of tons
of vendors who are selling everything from paintings, sculptures,
plants, clothing, jewelry, kids’ toys and games, and more. The best
part is that the event is free so you have plenty of green for scoring
a nice piece of artwork for yourself, getting a good idea for a DIY
project, or even getting your holiday shopping started early. The
possibilities are endless when you’re surrounded by a bunch
of free thinker movers and shakers. The Festival is held 10am
to 4pm both days, and you’ll find vendors lined up and down
Northeast Fourth Avenue. So dust off that hat and go outside!
White wine tastes better after a leisurely jaunt while looking
at art, don’t you agree? Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561)
Rice is the center of my carb-loving life, and it’s even better
with soy sauce and some raw fish. Let’s roll! September is
National Rice Month and as if you need any encouragement
to indulge in sushi, sashimi, curry and rolls galore, you now have it.
Lemongrass Asian Bistro has been dishing out the freshest Asian
cuisine for the past 10-plus years and the team knows the secret to
enjoyable dishes. Start your rice extravaganza with the Spicy Tuna
crispy sushi rice and garnished with black tobiko for $12. Move
right along to the Pacific Roll, made with spicy tuna, cucumber, and
topped with seared wahoo, red tobiko, chopped raw onions, fried
shallots, micro wasabi greens and a special Japanese yuzu sauce for
$16, or the Florida Roll, with tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado and
