The Mountain Times • Sept. 18-24, 2019 ROCKIN’ THE REGION • 17 Rockin the Region with Tom Irish Tom Irish, Mick Jagger, sometimes they’re one and the same. Tom Irish is performing Sunday 7 p.m. at Hide-A-Way Tavern in downtown Rutland. This past Friday he was in Stowe with Joey Leone for the British Invasion, performing as Mick Jagger. However you see him, it’s a great show. I first saw him years ago in the Ziggy Jagger Band in Rutland. Sometimes he does Mick better than Mick. Irish said, “Tidbit on the origin of the name ‘Ziggy Jagger.’ Kevin Quinn of No Mercy coined it after seeing my Rockin’ the Region By DJ Dave Hoffenberg solo act which is heavy on Bowie and The Stones. When it came to naming the band, I brought it up and everyone was like, ‘OK.’ Easiest band ever, no work to even name it. That was a fun band.” It was a talented band, too. Besides Irish, local favorites Jeff Poremski (on guitar) and the Johnson brothers Jared (on keys) and Chris (on bass) played in it. The late, great Big Will Hagenlocher played the drums. When I say talented, I mean it. At Will’s memorial, Ziggy Jagger played live with no drummer but with a backing track of Will on drums from a recorded show that Chris Pallutto managed to isolate the drums from. It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen. I used to work with Will at the Wobbly and that brought up the memory of Tom sitting in with the Smooth Tunas. They were before my DJ-ing at the Wobbly days but I would see the Smooth Tunas frequently in the early ‘90s. You can also catch Tom Irish’s show the next two Saturdays at the Killington Mountain Lodge at 7:45 p.m. He’ll be at CJ’s Suds South every other Friday, Oct. 4 to Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. If you see his name, go see his show, which is solo acoustic classic rock. Irish said of his show, “I like to think it’s different from what some people do because of the material.” He plays a lot of Stones, Steely Dan and Neil Young. He sings, plays guitar and harmonica. He added, “I consider myself a fairly decent rhythm guitarist. I’ve never really been a lead guitarist, the guitar is there to support my vocals. I try and bring something original to it, in terms of feel in the voice. People seem to enjoy that because I make it into a performance, I’m not just kind of singing.” Tom Irish first sat in with Leone at the old Santa Fe about 20 years ago. That started a great friendship. Leone had him come to the Wobbly Halloween party, dressed as Mick Jagger and do a few Stones tunes. He did the Stowe show last year, too. He said, “That’s a Rockin’ with Tom Irish. big deal for me. Joey’s band with the Chop Shop horns is a kickin’ band. For Joey to cut me a check to sing a few songs is like a feather in the cap because he doesn’t have a lot of people that he asks to come sing with him.” Irish (60) had a banjo in his hand at age 3 but thinks he didn’t actually play it. Same deal at age 5 with his Roy Rogers guitar but this time he would stand on a table and belt out, “Please, Please Me.” His family got a piano for his sister but Irish was able to pick out some tunes by ear and play Christmas carols. His parents got him lessons but he didn’t like it. In the fourth grade he took up trumpet but quickly switched to trombone and also played percussion. He started really playing guitar at age 13. His first paid gig was at Jay Peak playing organ. His first on guitar was two or three years later at a Grange hall. It didn’t turn into a career until later in life. Irish has been in restaurant management for years. He would work 100 hours a week with no time for guitar. He also had his own web design company. A friend of his, Wayne Devaul, who passed away, got him back into it with two gigs and sold him a guitar and PA for cheap. He said, “I was doing it a lot in the mid 90s playing the base lodges, Mother Shapiro’s, The Nightspot and then took a seven-year break until Wayne got me back in.” He’s been playing harmonica for 20 years. He said, “Harmonica has always been improvisational for me. If you have an ear, you can pick it up and blow it.” Rick Redington got him into playing in Rutland. They met at Redington’s open mic at Uncle Sam’s. He gave Irish a gig at June’s Corner Bar. That turned into a weekly thing. Recently, he sat in with Supply & Demand at Moguls a few weeks ago, singing “Sympathy for the Devil.” He said, “To go out and not be strapped to a guitar and have a big crowd? I love it. It doesn’t get much better. When I get the opportunity to do that, I do. I only did one song but every head in the place turned. Cameras come out, it’s a cool feeling.” He is driven by the people. He said, “If people didn’t enjoy it, you wouldn’t do it. I also do it for my own head.
