A message
from the CEO
Kia ora and a happy new year to you! Welcome to the
latest issue of InterAktive – our eMagazine showcasing
Aktive in action.
An early focus for Aktive in 2018 will be advocating
with our partners to ensure sport and recreation is not
forgotten in Auckland Council’s Long-term Plan budget
(p. 4). Submissions for the Long-term Plan open in late
February and we ask that you make your views heard
to Auckland Council as there is the risk of major budget
cuts for the sector that will affect our ability to play sport
and recreate in our city. Keep an eye on our social media
channels for more details and look for #sportmatters.
The Greater Auckland Aquatic Action Plan (GAAAP)
has had another successful year of delivering Water
Skills for Life lessons. Read wonderful feedback
received from one of the schools that participated in
Auckland Council’s and Second Nature Charitable Trust’s
opportunity for year 7-8 (GAAAP) school students
to extend their water safety knowledge at Vector Wero
Whitewater Park (p. 6).
2017 saw Aktive begin facilitating the Counties Manukau
KiwiSport investment. Please take the opportunity
to read about Counties Manukau Fast Fund recipient
New Zealand American Football Federation and its
innovative programme EndZone (p.8).
Key programmes Good Sports and HERA – Everyday
Goddess have made significant progress. On page 10
we highlight how New Zealand Rugby League
has integrated the Good Sports philosophy and
approach into its work in the youth sport space.
Please take the time to read the outcomes of the first
of a series of events entitled HERActivity Days (p. 12).
We are also proud to announce New Zealand women’s
motocross star Courtney Duncan as an ambassador
for the project (p. 13).
In addition, the recently transitioned He Oranga Poutama
team saw another successful year of running Auckland’s
largest Māori event - Iwi of Origin (p. 15)
Page 16 and 17 outlines our Shared Services and
Procurement offering to the sector. To date we have
made available savings of over $1m (net of costs),
and are driving an average of 40% savings – money
that can and has been invested back into sports at the
grassroots level. As your contracts come up for renewal,
I encourage you to seek a quote through our Corporate
Services Manager, Ian Jagger, for vehicles, copiers and
legal services.
Finally, it was wonderful to learn that Aktive Trustee
Helen Robinson was awarded an Order of New Zealand
Merit in the new year’s honours, joining Chair Raewyn
Lovett in this distinction.
Looking forward into 2018, as I’m sure is the case
for all, it is shaping up to be busy. I’m excited to see
the continual roll out and implementation of The Auckland
Approach to Community Sport and look forward to
working together, with you, to make Auckland the
world’s most active city.
Advocacy
Sport and recreation for Aucklanders - where is it
in the 10 Year Budget?
The Mayor’s 10 Year Budget acknowledges issues
including congestion, housing affordability and water
quality; however, there is little detail around investment
in physical activity for Aucklanders.
The sport and recreation sector
contributes at least $1.76 billion
to the Auckland economy, employing
more than 17,000 people. There
are also 308,880 volunteers who
contribute 22.1 million hours per
annum.
Dr Sarah Sandley, Chief Executive Officer, Aktive says
physical activity makes a substantial contribution to the
health and wellbeing of all Aucklanders and connects
communities; given this, investment is imperative.
“Physical activity is incredibly
important to the lives of Aucklanders
and comes with significant, well
documented social, health and
economic benefits – investment is
key to this now and in the future,”
says Dr Sandley. “We are concerned
that there is a real and serious risk of
underinvestment in physical activity
under the 10 Year Budget.
Physical inactivity cost New Zealand’s health care
system over $200 million in 2013. 32% of New Zealand
children are expected to be overweight or obese by
2025, with 21% of 4-year-old children in Auckland
already overweight or obese.
Together with Sport Auckland,
Sport Waitakere, Harbour Sport and
Community Leisure Management
(CLM), Aktive is committed to
making Auckland the world’s most
active city.
Dr Sandley adds: “Whether you’re a player, coach, club
member, school, parent or simply enjoy physical activity,
it’s important to make our voices heard and get involved
in protecting sport and recreation investment in the 10
Year Budget.
“Talk to your Local Board or email LongTermPlan@
aucklandcouncil.govt.nz. We’re also sharing our views
on social media tagging @aklcouncil and #sportmatters.
Aucklanders love physical activity and it’s up to us to
have our say.”
The Mayor’s 10 Year Budget Proposal is the start of
the consultation process with Aucklanders. Public
submissions open 26 February and run through till the
end of March 2018.
“Without this support, our current and future community
sport and recreation spaces are in jeopardy. This means
our growing, increasingly diverse population won’t have
access to suitable infrastructure to participate in physical
activity – whether it’s a competitive rugby match, social
tennis, school sports events or a friendly game of
football.”
GAAAP
Auckland Council and Second Nature Charitable Trust provided a limited
number of places for year 7-8 Greater Auckland Aquatic Action Plan (GAAAP)
school students to extend their water safety knowledge at Vector Wero
Whitewater Park.
Children from schools who took part were given the
chance to learn how to paddle a guided 8-person raft in
unison before heading to the grade 1-2 Tamariki River
to paddle down. Students were then given the choice to
swim down the river before performing a river crossing
as a group.
The letter on the right was received from the Principal
of View Road School after their students’ water safety
experience.
The New Zealand American Football Federation received funding through
the KiwiSport Counties Manukau Fast Fund. Below we profile its EndZone
programme – a junior version of the non-contact American Flag Football game.
Why did you apply for the Counties
Manukau Fast Fund?
As part of introduction we needed to raise awareness of
the activity and the opportunity to play hence the request
for Fast Fund assistance to run a holiday programme in
Manurewa during the October holidays. The area has a
number of primary and intermediate schools which are
the target age groups for the activity and the holiday
programme was a “kick-start” for EndZone.
What did the delivery model look like?
The holiday programme was delivered by the local sport
delivery group, Activ8. It was well attended by over 50
participants. This has led to a short league competition at
Mountfort Park in term 4, 2017 and term 1, 2018,
with the assistance of Rangers Gridiron.
Where to next with the EndZone
programme? The holiday programme and the
subsequent league are a pilot programme with the plan
being to deliver ongoing, local, accessible, leagues at
targeted locations in Auckland and in other centres
around the country.
Over time the number of players playing Flag Football
will increase across the age groups and players will have
opportunities to attend regional and national events and
also to play the contact version of American Football.
There will also be the opportunity to be considered for
scholarships to schools in the USA for both versions of
the sport.
The Good Sports project continues to champion culture change in the attitudes
and beliefs that adults have towards youth sport. New Zealand Rugby League
(NZRL) is one National Sporting Organisation that has taken on the
Good Sports approach - we caught up with them to see how it is going.
What work has Good Sports done with
NZRL so far? In early 2016 NZRL started investigating
the implementation of a side line campaign as part
of the Rugby League World Cup 2017 Legacy Plan.
Given one of the key objectives from the Voice of the
Participant national survey was a warm and friendly club
environment, NZRL recognised the need to address
the experience of those on and off the field. The legacy
mandate was to build more a positive experience for our
participants and the Good Sports project appeared the
right fit to support this objective.
We started working with Aktive to introduce Good
Sports into the NZRL ‘be a sport’ sideline campaign.
The initial stage was for all NZRL development officers to
undertake an introduction workshop of the Good Sports
approach including the effects of early specialisation in
youth sport.
In 2017, Aktive’s Good Sports team delivered a bespoke
good sports session for all our community staff,
development officers and zone managers.
Why did NZRL first engage with the Good
Sports project? To improve the on and off field
experiences NZRL committed to introducing a sideline
behaviour campaign which Auckland Rugby League had
been using for several years called Be a Sport (BAS).
Through the Aktive eMagazine the Good Sports project
came to our attention and was identified as a good
resource to support BAS’s implementation.
What impacts have you seen the Good
Sports project have on people within the
NZRL community in the way they approach
youth sports? While Good Sports was initially
thought of as supporting our BAS initiative it became
apparent that to change the culture it goes way beyond
the side line. Good Sports now underpin all our junior
programme conversations, resources and outcomes. The
GS spine (performance vs development) and educating
our key influencers, coaches, parents and teachers
are our top priorities. All our community staff have now
completed a Good Sports developers course and from
this year all pre-season club information sessions and
coaching resources will include Good Sports context.
Several zones are also looking to make it part of their
representative programmes for coaches and parents.
NZRL focus for all junior programmes will be creating
more fun and skill development experiences in a noncompetition
environment.
What future does the Good Sports project
have with NZRL? Good Sports will underpin all
decisions in our volunteer and junior programmes with
the view to expand it into the youth programmes in
2019. NZRL will be developing rugby league specific
resources, personnel capability and evidence to support
the implementation of the Good Sports approach across
our national programmes. We will also continue to work
with the Good Sports team to support and be involved in
any new Good Sports content and resources.
Any further comments about Good Sports?
The investment NZRL has made into the Good Sports
project has enabled us to develop a collective approach
on the key priorities of our junior programme and
understand the importance of building the right culture
through education with the key influencers - coaches,
parents/supporters and teachers.
The BAS initiative has already made an impact, with
the addition of the Good Sports content, NZRL is
excited about the culture change and the increased
evidence of ‘more positive experiences on and off
the field’.
NZRL view our relationship with Good Sports
as long term and we are confident that,
having introduced our staff to the Good
Sports model, they are prepared and
equipped to have those hard discussions
with ambitious coaches and supporters.
Our staff now endorse NZRL’s approach
to junior programmes focussed on
development and a fun skilled based
environment.
A Day of HERActivty
The first of an intended series of HERA – Everyday Goddess events took place
in November 2017 at Manurewa Netball Centre.
The day dubbed ‘HERActvity Day’ saw seven different
sport and recreation organisations offering modified
games or have a go sessions to approximately 40
year nine and ten girls from three different schools;
Papatoetoe High School, Southern Cross Campus
and Manurewa High School. The central theme of the
day was creating connections between the girls, the
schools and the sports with many of the girls who
participated being identified as non-participants in
either extra curriculum sport or P.E. class.
As a participant-led project, all seven activities were
identified by the girls as part of the planning for the
day. Sporting and recreation organisations present at
the event were Papatoetoe Weightlifting Club, Turbo
Touch, Manurewa Football Club, CLM Out & About
team, OnBoard Skate Sisters of Shred, Auckland
Basketball Limited Services and Counties Manukau
Rugby. As a connection to potential employment
opportunities a large number of female police officers
joined in on the activities on the day and interacted
with the HERA girls.
The events aim was to provide
an environment for the girls to
experience minimum barriers to
participation.
Next steps forward will be to provide a template
to partners so they have the capability to deliver a
similar day in their local communities. There is also
a need to build the partnership between sport and
recreation organisations and the respective schools
with support from the new Regional Sports Director
for Counties Manukau.
94% of participants indicated
that they feel more supported than they
did when they arrived at the event
81% of participants indicated that
they feel more motivated to get active
than I did when I arrived this morning
87% of participants are quite likely
to continue to do one of these activities
again in the future.
Women’s motorcross star supports project
empowering more girls to be active
Women’s motocross star Courtney Duncan has put her support behind
HERA – Everyday Goddess, which empowers 10-18 year old girls to be active.
Funded by Sport New Zealand, Aktive, Auckland
Council and New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT),
the Aktive-led project takes a participant-led approach
to engaging girls in sport and recreation in Auckland.
Current New Zealand Senior Woman’s Champion,
and with eyes on the World title, Courtney is excited
to use her story and experience to help engage girls
to participate in sport and recreation through HERA –
Everyday Goddess.
“It is so important for all girls to have the chance to be
active and do so in a way that has their needs as the
focus,” says Courtney.
“As a female, there are many factors that can stop us
from wanting to participate in sport or just being active.
I hope my journey can help other girls
see that you can be active in a way
that is unique to you. At the end of
the day it is all about giving it a go
and having fun.”
Sport New Zealand data from
its most recent Young People’s
survey (2011) identified a much
lower level of participation in sport
and recreation among teenage girls
than teenage boys (63.3% versus 73.8%
among 11 to 14-year-olds). These figures fell
to 47.8% and 61.6% for teens aged 15 to
18-years.
Recognising and reducing the barriers
to participation that young women face
in undertaking sport and recreation
opportunities underpins the HERA –
Everyday Goddess project. It is focused
on reverting the trend in drop off
rates in participation and supporting
girls in physical activity through
various programmes including a
Samoan language girls-only
cricket programme run out
of Papatoetoe Cricket
Club or a partnership
with OnBoard Skate
for the Sisters of Shred
programme.
Dr Sarah Sandley CEO Aktive is pleased with the
progress of the innovative project. With Courtney
as an ambassador, it is anticipated it will go from
strength to strength.
“More than 1500 girls have been engaged in either
formal or informal sport and recreation opportunities
through HERA – Everyday Goddess,” says Dr Sandley.
“We are confident that with the support of a young
female rising star like Courtney this will continue to
increase.
She adds: “Girls aged 10-18 years are one of Sport
New Zealand’s targeted participation groups. HERA
puts the needs and interests of the girls we are trying to
help to be more active at the centre – the “HERA girls”
themselves shape the programme. We figure this is the
best way to achieve our goal of previously sedentary
girls leading a more active life.”
Celebrating
Coaches Evening
Coaches from across the Aktive Coaching & Talent Development network
and programmes were invited to the first Celebrating Coaches evening
with fellow coaches across codes and the region.
Coaches very rarely get the chance to collaborate and
share thoughts outside of their respective codes. By
bringing together coaches, they can compare practices
and philosophies – comparisons that are invaluable to
their development as coaches.
As such, on the night coaches from the various
coaching programmes within the Aktive Coaching &
Talent Development network reflected on their coaching
journey. Sharing lessons that they have for others, driven
from their experiences as an athlete or their current role
in coaching. Headlining the night was former Professor of
Physical Education and Director of Competitive Sports at
the United States Military Academy at West Point,
Dr. Ralph Pim.
The start of what is hoped to become a recurring annual
event on coaches’ calendars, the night provided a
much-needed forum allowing for coaches to further
develop themselves amongst their peers.
Over the past year, Aktive Coaching
& Talent Development has provided
460 development opportunities
to a total of 3,800 coaches.
All speakers reflected messages that can be often
forgotten; keep things fun for athletes and participants
to encourage positive sporting experiences, coaches are
often also coaches of life skills and that as a coach you
are a leader to those that you coach.
Iwi of Origin
Auckland’s largest Māori sporting event, Iwi of Origin, again celebrated
another successful year of competition in October 2017.
Facilitated and run by He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki
with the support of Auckland Council, the 10th year
of the event attracted over 1700 participants of Māori
descent to Pulman Park in Papakura.
Along with healthy participation numbers, a crowd
of over 2000 spectators watched many different Iwi,
Hapu or Marae compete in Ki o Rahi, Tag, Rugby
League, Touch, Netball and Basketball. As a vehicle for
Māori celebration, the day also featured a cook off and
amazing race. For many of the sporting codes and teams
competitiveness was put to the side with the promotion
of participation being the key focus.
Not resting on current successes, there are plans to
extend the event this year to continue to increase
participation numbers. The introduction of junior grades
to the more popular sporting codes and splitting the
event over multiple days are being considered.
“Iwi of Origin is a day for Māori as
Māori. People can celebrate with
whanau through sport; something
that resonates with people from all
generations.”
- Wiremu Mato, He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki Manager
