Together with profs. Max Nieuwdorp and Ulrich Beuers and dr. Sandjai<br />
Ramsoekh, he has initiated outpatient clinics and a cohort study for<br />
patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) at both locations of<br />
the Amsterdam UMC. In concurrence with obesity and diabetes mellitus<br />
type 2, the incidence of progressive forms of NAFLD with advanced liver<br />
fibrosis is increasing, requiring adequate care paths.<br />
The AG&M innovation grant will allow us…<br />
… to implement an innovative research tool in the Amsterdam UMC that we gained experience with during our<br />
collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania in recent years: redifferentiation of induced pluripotent stem<br />
cells into hepatocyte-like cells - iHeps. This liver cell model, alone or in co-culture with hepatic stellate cells, can be<br />
applied to test novel NAFLD candidate genes that come out of our cohort study, and to test potential new NAFLD<br />
drugs and probiotics. It can also be of general benefit to other liver-related research questions in the Amsterdam<br />
UMC, and it can serve as a model for inborn errors of metabolism, when induced pluripotent stem cells are derived<br />
from e.g. skin fibroblasts of the involved patients. Together, we aim to make iHeps a versatile new research tool for<br />
the Amsterdam UMC.<br />
