every Thursday to Sunday 11.00 to 17.00
Post-Impressionist Living:
The Omega Workshops
is at the galleries
at Charleston.
Established by the
painter and art critic
Roger Fry in 1913,
with Vanessa Bell and
Duncan Grant as codirectors,
the Omega Workshops
were inspired by the new, vital spirit of
Post-Impressionism, producing bold, playful
and inventive items for the home.
Tickets include entry to Coming Home: Virginia
Woolf by Vanessa Bell, part of a major National
Portrait Gallery project that sees portraits
of iconic individuals from the national collection
travelling to the towns and cities most
closely associated with their subjects. Vanessa
Bell’s portrait of her sister, Virginia Woolf, was
painted at nearby Asheham, Virginia’s Sussex
home in 1912, and is displayed at Charleston
for the first time.
From 3rd October,
Studio+ Gallery
in Seaford present
The Unexpected – an
exhibition of new
paintings by Peter
Messer, many on
display for the first
time. His intense
and watchful tempera
paintings explore unseen elements of a
world ignored by many of us until he, deftly
and persuasively, reminds us of it. (21 Church
St, Seaford. Continues until 3rd Nov.) Just
next door, the Crypt Gallery has a full month
of events with a group exhibition, a guitar
recital and an interactive sound and vision
installation inspired by the Sussex Downs.
