As president of the Pearl Chamber of Commerce, I am

senior center complex located behind City Hall and the Pearl

with all their activities. 

I would be remiss if I did not mention our award winning 

Pearl Public School District. They have excellent teachers 

and staff, second to none. The school also offer many 

extracurricular activities such state championship sports 

teams and an award winning band. These are just a few of 

the great activities our excellent school system has to offer. 

We are also very proud of having Hinds Community College 

Rankin Campus located in Pearl.

Hard Work, Commitment, & Service 

Shirley & 

Ray Rogers

When a married couple celebrates their 65th anniversary this June, and they still 

have a sparkle in their eyes for each other, along with a catalog of life experiences and 

contributions invested in their city and county, one would do well to take note. 

The evidence points to their story as one 

of hard work, commitment, and service laced 

together with a love for each other that makes 

it one “happily ever after” chronicle. 

It was that purple velvet swimsuit that Shirley 

Greer was wearing that caught Ray Rogers’ eye 

when she was taking up tickets at Battlefield 

Park swimming pool. Shirley was fifteen, and 

Ray was twenty, but her beauty, combined with 

that purple swimsuit, rocked his world. 

He commented to the group of guys that 

he was with, “I’m gonna marry that girl!” 

A quick response from one of his friends 

answered, “Heck no, you’re not; that’s my sister!” 

Two weeks later on a Sunday, Ray and three 

other couples left the swimming pool to pick up 

Shirley from church for Ray’s first date with 

the young beauty. Ray later told Shirley, “I knew 

you were special and different.” 

For the next eleven months the two saw 

each other every day until Ray, just out of high 

school, left for Alabama to play minor league 

baseball with the Washington Senators 

(a division of the Minnesota Twins franchise). 

The daily long distance phone calls soon made 

them realize their romance couldn’t afford 

those bills. Marriage was the perfect answer.

Even though Shirley still believes that 

decision hurt her parents, they agreed to allow 

the young couple to share their wedding vows 

on June 16, 1953, in a simple ceremony—with 

their parents present, of course. 

When school began for Shirley, and Ray was 

in the off-season, they returned to Pearl to live 

with Ray’s parents. Shirley caught the school 

there she became personnel director of the 

Department of Corrections for the Rankin 

facility. She retired from that office to keep 

their first grandson. 

On Friday nights during football season, the 

couple go to the Ray Rogers Football Field that 

was named after Rogers in 2008 where Rogers 

is the game announcer, a title he’s held for 

When discussing their variety of stories in 

their eventful careers, it’s difficult to maintain a 

single focus. But as for their secret to sixty-five 

years of happy marriage, they share their own 

experiences: “When we first got married we 

would say our prayers every night while holding 

hands.” Their only contention has been over 

Ray’s wanting to be early for everything and 

bus from there, and even though everyone knew 

she was married, she was still voted Miss Pearl 

High School her senior year. (Ray had been 

voted Mr. Pearl High School his senior year.) 

Sixty-five years, three daughters, four 

grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren 

later, the Rogers have a storehouse of memoires 

and memorabilia. 

Ray played minor league baseball for seven 

years and earned his spot in the semi-pro 

Baseball Hall of Fame. An advertising career 

followed that, along with thirty-four years as a 

representative for Rankin County, District 61. 

He’s made countless friends through that 

position and holds a notable record as being fair 

and friendly to both sides of the political aisle. 

When Governor Phil Bryant was a representative 

and sat in front of Representative Rogers, 

Bryant advised fellow-legislators, “Vote like 

Ray Rogers, and you’ll be voting right.” 

Shirley served as the first city clerk for Pearl 

and held that position for twenty years. From 

fifty-four years. Shirley added, “He’s never 

missed a game. If he was sick, the good Lord 

always made him well by Friday night!” While 

he announces the game from the press box, 

Shirley sits in a stadium seat right below him. 

After Pearl won the 2018 Championship, 

the team presented Rogers with a championship 

ring and a helmet with the team’s signatures. 

Ask Ray Rogers about the Pearl/Brandon 

rivalry, and he will tell you, “I started it!” In his 

deep, animated voice, Rogers describes the 

beginning of the rivalry: “As a junior, I was the 

first quarterback and captain of the Pearl 

football team. We didn’t have our own football 

field but played all our games on the road. It was 

Thanksgiving 1949, the first game between 

Pearl and Brandon, and we were the underdogs. 

The game ended with a 0-0 tie. We fought 

before the game, after the game and during the 

game – thus beginning the rivalry.” Rogers 

paused, with fond recollections of the game and 

then summed up his feelings, “We are still 

rivals; NOT enemies.” 

Shirley’s preference for getting there right on 

time! 

Shirley shared more insight, “Marriage is no 

50-50. Sometimes it has to be 100% by one of 

the spouses, but if you truly love a person, you 

can make marriage work.” 

There was that initial attraction for both. 

For her it was Ray’s personality. He said of 

Shirley, “She’s always been the prettiest girl 

I’ve ever seen – truly God’s angel on earth.” 

When the interview ended, the couple 

ushered us out to our vehicle and pointed out 

license plates on their vehicles that the Pearl 

School District had made for the communityminded 

couple. They were #1 and #2. 

“Who’s #1?’ we asked. 

Before Ray could respond, Shirley spoke, 

“He’s always #1.” After sixty-five years, one 

can’t improve on that ranking! l

The Hinds Community College Rankin 

Campus is located in Pearl, Mississippi. 

The campus is a popular choice for 

students opting for a more affordable 

higher education, with a wide variety of 

programs, close to home. Because of its 

proximity to a thriving business corridor, 

adults returning to school, either to work 

on a degree or to gain new skills for better 

career opportunities, also frequently 

choose the Rankin Campus. Day, evening, 

and online classes are available. 

Through a thriving partnership with the 

local school districts, nearly 1,000 high 

school students from Pearl and Rankin 

County Schools take advantage of dual 

enrollment/credit courses, which allow an

designed to prepare highly skilled multi-craft 

technicians for careers in the manufacturing

programs found at The Clyde Muse Center. 

The Clyde Muse Center, which fronts 

I-20, near the airport exit, is another feature 

of the Rankin campus. In addition to 

instructional space, it serves as a multipurpose 

facility that includes a 3,500-seat 

auditorium, meeting space, and training 

rooms. The Muse Center is frequently host 

to community, business, and governmental 

groups for events ranging from high school 

graduations to large professional 

conferences. 

The largest percentage of Rankin campus 

students are enrolled in academic programs 

designed to transfer to a four-year university. 

As such, the campus is extremely proud of 

its rapidly growing honors program. This 

academic enrichment program benefits 

students as they transition to senior 

colleges and seek scholarships. 

The Rankin Campus is the second largest 

within in the Hinds Community College 

District, which is the fourth largest institution 

early start on earning credits toward a 

college degree. Additionally, the Pearl- 

Rankin Career-Technical Center resides 

on the Hinds Rankin Campus. Here, both 

districts’ students attend career and 

technical training programs, which prepare 

individuals for a variety of skilled careers. 

As the demand for skilled labor continues 

to increase, Hinds continues to expand the 

number of programs available in Rankin 

County. Associate degree nursing and 

practical nursing along with electrical, 

welding, and plumbing programs are 

housed at the Hinds CC Career and 

Technical Center on Greenfield Road.

The Pearl Public Library, a branch of the 

Central Mississippi Regional Library 

System (CMRLS), is located in downtown 

Pearl, a skip away from the Riverwind 

Shopping District—the city’s resort status 

area—and offers a vast range of services. 

Often described as having an understated 

elegance not found in most 

libraries, the library recently celebrated 10 

years in its stylish, multimillion dollar facility 

located at 2416 Old Brandon Road. 

Huge, spiral-globed lights hang from 

the ceiling and wooden columns line the 

center of the library for a spacious and 

comfortable environment. Beautiful art 

hangs throughout the library. 

“The Pearl Library has been a place of 

community for as long as I can remember,” 

said Pearl Mayor Jake Windham. “In 

addition to a great resource for reading 

and research, it’s a place where my 

children enjoy Story Time. Teenagers 

meet after school and elderly people 

attend events. It’s a great place to make 

new friends and come together as a 

community, which is a win-win for every 

community.” 

In February, during Library Lovers’ 

Month, patrons are treated to free cookies 

and/or donuts and coffee donated by area 

businesses. National Youth Art Month in

KIWANIS 

The Pearl Kiwanis Club was established in 1986 

and currently consists of 40 members. Our purpose 

is to empower our community by investing in the lives 

of its children. The club raises funds throughout the 

year which support scholarships for local high school 

students and community improvement projects. 

Kiwanis International is a global organization of 

members dedicated to serving the children of the 

world. Kiwanis and its family of clubs–nearly 600,000 

members strong–annually raise more than 100 million 

dollars and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer 

hours to strengthen communities and serve children. 

Members of every age attend regular meetings, 

experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes, 

and participate in service projects that help their 

communities. Members also make an impact throughout 

the world by participating in Kiwanis International’s 

Global Campaign for Children, The Eliminate Project: 

Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. 

The Pearl Kiwanis Club meets at noon every Tuesday 

at the Holiday Inn at Trustmark Park in Pearl.

Ten years or so ago, it would have been hard 

to imagine the shopping and entertainment 

mecca that is now located in Pearl. Bass Pro Shop, 

The Outlets of Mississippi, Cavender’s Western 

Outfitters, and Sam’s Club are all major shopping 

destinations for people from all parts of the state, 

with The Mississippi Braves drawing baseball fans 

as well. 

“It started out as the idea of an out-of-town 

developer, Bloomfield Development, out of 

Michigan, and a visionary named Murray Wikol,” 

said Kathy Hackshaw, Director of Retail Development 

for Bloomfield Holdings, LLC “We still have 

a great relationship with Mr. Wikol, who conceived 

the project, and worked in concert with Tim 

Bennett to sell the Braves (a Class AA affiliate 

of the Atlanta Braves) on moving to Pearl from 

Greenville, South Carolina. He also courted Bass 

Pro Shop and sold them on this area.” 

At that time, Yates Construction was hired as a 

contractor for Bass Pro and the baseball stadium. 

“At some point during construction, Yates took off 

the contractor hat and put on the developer hat to 

become a part owner of the development,” 

explained Hackshaw. “It was actually a very easy 

transition for Yates. The deal got done, and the 

project came in on time. The Braves and Bass Pro 

are both happy, and that laid the groundwork for 

future development.”

Next to break ground was Sam’s Club, 

which did a land purchase in the area and 

built a new store. The hotel group that 

owns Holiday Inn took notice and built a 

Holiday Inn Express. “They have been 

busy since they opened,” said Hackshaw. 

The development weathered the 

financial meltdown of 2008, 2009 and 

2010, but looked toward the future with the 

plan of opening an outlet mall. “We had 

always toyed with the idea of building an 

outlet center,” Hackshaw said, “but we 

didn’t really have experience with leasing 

one. Through our networking, we found 

FFO, a leasing group out of Baltimore. 

They have become a great advocate and 

part of our team.” 

The success of Bass Pro and Sam’s was 

a good story to get tenants to sign up for 

space in the outlet mall. “The location 

couldn’t be more perfect,” said Hackshaw. 

“The site is located at the crossroads of 

I-55 and I-20, with unbelievable traffic 

counts.” Construction of The Outlets of 

Mississippi began in March 2013, and the 

center opened for business in November 

of the same year. It was crazy that we built 

325,000 square feet of retail space in 

such a short amount of time, but the result 

is beautiful. It’s a great looking center.” 

Kathy Hackshaw is the general manager 

of The Outlets. In 2014, the development 

was rebranded as The Connection. 

Signage was erected at the entrances to 

create a sense of arrival. Shanna Head 

serves as the marketing director for both 

The Outlets and The Connection. 

The next chapter in the story of The 

Connection is the addition of Cavender’s, 

a 20,000 square foot western-wear store 

which opened in March of 2017. Located 

directly across from the main entrance of 

The Outlets of Mississippi, Cavender’s 

brings Texas swagger to Mississippi 

shoppers in the form of western boots, 

work boots, jeans, accessories and more! 

Other outparcels will eventually be 

developed with additional retail offerings. 

“We are working hard to find suitable 

restaurant partners for the area,” said 

Hackshaw. “We are being somewhat 

choosy. It’s taken us ten years to get to 

this point, and so far, it’s been great.”

GARDEN CLUB 

The Spring Lake Garden Club of Pearl MS is federated with the Garden 

Club of MS, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc. Established in 2010, 

the club prides itself in helping with the beautification of the City of 

Pearl by planting over 30 trees, the planting of several daffodil sites, 

and providing funds to help the city with additions to the Memorial 

Garden and other areas in the city. Educating the youth of Pearl 

is a another main focus of the group from providing annual 

scholarships for a graduating senior, helping with life skills class at 

Pearl High School, sponsoring the Family Learning Garden at the 

public library, and educating the students at the Early Childhood 

Education Center about gardening. 

Golf 

Patrick Farms is a semi-private club located just minutes off the 

interstate and about 10 minutes from the airport. The public is 

welcome! Our 18-hole, par 72 course has spacious, well-manicured 

fairways that can be enjoyed year-round. We have active leagues for

The Pearl Senior Center is located at 110 Valentour 

Road. They have a recreation program for all senior 

adults aged 55 and older. Their motto is “Be active, 

be involved, and remember 55 is just the beginning.” 

Each month, newsletters are available to inform 

seniors and their families of special events. The 

monthly calendar includes a variety of activities such 

as men’s coffee, exercise classes, a ceramics class, 

crochet class, a line dancing class, dominoes, Mexican 

train, seasonal arts and crafts, bridge, Hand and Foot, 

movies, Bible study, Pokeno, and monthly birthday 

bingo. They also provide monthly luncheons, which 

include a variety of presentations ranging from 

entertainment to educational—but always fun.

Chamber Events 

The city of Pearl is host to many fun and exciting events 

throughout the year. The Pearl Chamber of Commerce 

Annual Awards Banquet is in February and is held at the 

Clyde Muse Center on the beautiful campus of Hinds 

Community College in Pearl. The catered banquet is a 

much anticipated event throughout the area with local 

business people, civic and charitable organizations, and 

city, county, and state officials attending. Special entertainment 

or a guest speaker is always a part of the program 

as well as the passing of the gavel from the outgoing 

president to the incoming president. 

The awards that are presented are the President’s 

Distinguished Service Award, the Large Business of the 

Year Award, Small Business of the Year Award, Pillar of 

the Community Award, New Business of the Year, and 

Ambassador of the Year Award. In addition, the Pearl 

Public School District and Park Place Christian Academy 

presents awards for the year: Teacher of the Year, 

Administrator of the Year, and Parent of the Year. 

Through a partnership with the Mississippi Blues 

Commission and Bass Pro Shops, the Gold Coast Blues 

Festival will take place on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 

the Bass Pro Shops in Pearl. Tickets will be available at 

the gate for $20 each (children 14 and under are free 

when accompanied by an adult). Gate opens at 11am 

and the music starts at 5pm. This festival will include 

many activities including a cornhole tournament where 

competitors of all ages will compete for the 1st prize of 

$1,000, 2nd place $250, and 3rd place $50. 2,000 

pounds of boiled crawfish will be served! And last but 

not least, there will be live music from famous Mississippi 

blues artists Kingfish, Zach Harmon, Keeshea Pratt, and 

Eddie Cotton.

The Mississippi Street Road Association Antique Car Show is held in March. 

Spectators and participants, alike, from all around the South, turn out in large 

numbers for this awesome car show with all kinds of vehicles including cars, trucks, 

motorcycles and anything with wheels. The car show is held in the parking lot of 

Trustmark Park. 

April is an exciting time of the year in Pearl because that’s when the Mississippi 

Braves baseball team opens the season at Trustmark Park. The Mississippi Braves, 

who moved to Pearl in 2005, is the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The M-Braves 

play 70 home games from early April through Labor Day. Since the inaugural 

season, over 100 former Mississippi Braves players have gone on to play in the 

big leagues. 

From giveaways to fireworks and much more, the Braves offer affordable family 

entertainment all summer. Aside from regular game tickets, the Braves offer luxury 

suite rentals, picnics, birthday parties, and more. Trustmark Park also hosts various 

high profile college and high school games along with other events throughout 

the year. The M-Braves home opening day is set for Wednesday, April 10th against 

the Mobile BayBears at Trustmark Park. 

April 22nd is Earth Day and the Pearl Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual 

recycling and document shredding event. Bring all of your old computers, TVs and 

other electronics for disposal as well as your documents, files, and other confidential 

information that you would like to have shredded. April is also a time for spring 

clean-up in the city of Pearl. Residents can have the city grounds employees come 

by and pick up their old washers, dryers, and other items that they would normally

April 26th is the date for the 2019 Pearl Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. A huge buffet 

breakfast always precedes the program. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is the 

official kick-off for the annual Pearl Day Festival that celebrates the birthday of the 

city of Pearl. This year’s high profile entertainment is award-winning Christian artist 

Lauren Daigle. 

A large carnival with all of your favorite rides and games, inflatables, food 

vendors, and other concessions will be available. Arts and crafts vendors from all 

over the state sell everything from homemade jams, jelly and honey, to jewelry 

and other locally made products. Live entertainment is on the stage with local 

artists and dancers performing throughout the day.

Speaking of fireworks, there is no other 

place that you want to be on July 4th than at 

Trustmark Park for a Mississippi Braves 

baseball game, followed by the largest 

fireworks show in central Mississippi! 

August is the month for our very popular 

Girls’ Night Out Fashion Show. The fun 

begins with a walk on the red carpet to the 

photo area where complimentary photos are 

taken. When the ladies reach their seat, a 

“swag bag” awaits them that is filled with all 

kinds of fun gifts such as jewelry, lip gloss, a 

makeup mirror, and great discount coupons. 

The buffet lines are filled with an incredible 

array of delicious food, desserts, and drinks. 

With five retailers participating, 75 models 

will be strutting their stuff in all of the latest 

fashions. The fashion merchandising 

department, including faculty and students at 

Hinds Community College, choreograph the 

entire production. This event counts as 

twenty percent of the student’s grade for the 

semester. Each merchant emcees their 

segment and awesome door prizes are 

given away in between retailers. It is truly the 

best girls’ night out event anywhere around! 

September means one thing in the city of 

Pearl—high school football. The Pearl Pirates 

and the Park Place Christian Academy 

Crusaders leave it all out on the field as they 

play their hearts out for their school and their 

many loyal fans. 

The Pearl Chamber of Commerce holds 

their annual two-flight golf tournament in 

October of every year at the Pearl Municipal 

Golf Course. It is a lot of fun and all of the 

golfers receive a nice door prize, lunch, 

snacks, and other goodies for participating. 

Halloween is also is a fun time. The city 

hosts a Fall Festival that is free for all of the 

kiddos and includes inflatable jumpers, 

games, hot dogs and other fun activities.

The second Saturday in December is the 

date for Jingle Bell Market, the largest event 

held in the city of Pearl. The festival is held at 

the Clyde Muse Center at Hinds Community 

College in Pearl. This fun-filled day will 

include over 150 arts and crafts vendors, 

food vendors, live entertainment all day, 

inflatables for the kids, and pictures with 

Santa for kids and pets. We have over ten 

thousand people in attendance every year 

and that number is growing by leaps and 

bounds. Jingle Bell Market is a one-day 

festival and there is no charge for admission. 

The Pearl Christmas Parade is also held in 

December. 

The Pearl Chamber of Commerce 

Christmas Open House is held in December 

every year. It is a festive come and go 

catered event for both chamber members 

and city and county officials.

What once was a sleepy little town nestled 

between Jackson and Brandon is now a booming 

city. Pearl is perfectly situated at the crossroads of 

the South. Interstate 20 provides a transportation link 

to the east and west coasts. Interstate 55 provides a 

route from New Orleans to Memphis, up to St. Louis 

and on to Chicago. Highway 49 intersects Interstate 

20 in Pearl and is a direct route to the Mississippi 

Gulf Coast. “The traffic on I-20 between Jackson 

and Brandon is the most heavily traveled piece of 

interstate in the state,” says Kathy Deer, executive 

director of the Pearl Chamber of Commerce. 

That high traffic count has made it possible for 

Pearl to experience unprecedented economic 

growth. It has certainly made it possible for Pearl to 

have such high-profile businesses like Bass Pro 

Shop and the Outlets of Mississippi. Two years ago, 

FedEx moved a large distribution center to the city. 

Pearl is also the furniture capitol of the state, with 

retailers including Miskelly Furniture, Miskelly Room 

Store, D. Noblin, Mattress Firm, T&D Furniture and 

Southern Rustic Furniture. “It’s surprising how much 

traffic all those furniture stores bring to this area,” 

says Deer. “People like having the selection.” There 

are also big box stores including Sam’s, Wal-Mart, 

Cavender’s, Big Lots, and more. 

“A lot of people don’t realize that many state agencies are located in Pearl,” 

says Deer. “The state crime lab, the state hospital, the state fire academy and 

others are located here. All of those draw a huge amount of traffic into the city, 

and those folks end up staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping 

in our stores, and enjoying the amenities Pearl has to offer. And of course, that’s 

great for our economy.” 

Pearl currently has 22 hotels in the city, with two more being built. “They 

wouldn’t build them if people weren’t staying in them,” Deer says. “It’s convenience 

for business travelers, whether driving or flying. You must go through 

Pearl to get to the airport. Pearl is also a good stopping point on road trips 

and our proximity to the highways makes this an ideal place to stop. People 

like to stay where they can have choices on where to eat, and we have plenty 

of restaurants.” 

Two new restaurants have just opened. Mug Shots is now open at 

417 Riverwind Drive and Steak ‘n Shake is open at 300 Riverwind Drive. 

The largest employers in the city are the state hospital and Pearl Public 

Schools, followed by Sam’s, Wal-Mart and Miskelly. Pearl is also the site of the 

Rankin branch of Hinds Community College, including the state-of-the-art 

Clyde Muse Center, which is the site of many community events. 

While there are plenty of national chains located in the city, Deer says the 

mom-and-pop stores are thriving as well. “We have new stores opening all the 

time. We love our local mom-and-pop businesses.” With a mix of small 

businesses and large big box retailers, the city has become a shopping mecca 

for people across the state. “Pearl has truly become a destination,” Deer says, 

“and we welcome visitors with open arms. Some people come and don’t want 

to leave. We love it when people move here.”
