XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS:
Obasanjo says S/African President admitted mistake
*’Buhari heads to S/A this week’
By Daud Olatunji
Former President Olu
segun Obasanjo said,
yesterday, that the President
of South Africa, Cyril
Ramaphosa, admitted that
his country made mistake
<strong>over</strong> xenophobia attacks on
Nigerians among other foreign
nationals and was prepared
to correct it.
Obasanjo said the South
African president spoke when
he paid a courtesy visit to him.
He further said that he was
aware of a planned meeting
between Ramaphosa and
Nigerian President Muhammadu
Buhari on the xenophobia
in South Africa, urging
them to manage the opportunity
properly.
The former President stated
this at his residence in
Abeokuta while speaking to
journalists on what he discussed
with Ramaphosa during
his visit to South Africa.
Obasanjo said, “One of the
major things we discussed is
this issue of xenophobia or
afrophobia.
“I took the opportunity of
being in South Africa about
three or four days ago to actually
pay a courtesy call on
President Cyril Ramaphosa
and he quickly granted me
the opportunity. One of the
major things we discussed is
this issue of xenophobia or
afrophobia.
“One good thing I disc<strong>over</strong>ed
among many is that the
President said to me that there
are so much at stake and
‘whatever mistake we have
made, we have to correct it’.
And I think that was a very
good statement and I know
that he meant it because, he
immediately, said ‘look
,what can we do or should
we do?’
“I think that is all we must
be doing and be saying and
I said my joy is that President
Cyril Ramaphosa is
ready to do what needs to be
him on the spot.
The boy reportedly rolled under
of police detectives,
some irate youths mobilised
Accident, not bandits, killed our
officers —DSS
By Soni Daniel, Abuja
The Department of State
Services (DSS) has said
that two of its personnel
died Friday night due to an accident
at Gidan Busa Katari,
along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.
The service made the confirmation
in a statement by the
DSS Public Relations Officer,
Peter Afunanya.
The statement explained that
the accident occurred while the
team was heading to one of
the states in the North-West
zone for an operation when
the Hilux vehicle in which
they were travelling somersaulted.
“Two persons died in the
accident while another was
injured. He is presently receiving
required attention in
a medical facility.
“This clarification has become
necessary in order to
debunk fake news making
the round that the gallant
officers were attacked by
bandits,” Afunanya said.
and to put the relationship between
Nigeria and South Africa
on the right track.
“One of the things they are
going to do between South Africa
and Nigeria is, they are
going to have what we established
in my term that we called
Bi-lateral Commission.
“During my time, it was at the
second echelon level of Vice-
Presidents, Deputy Presidents,
but, now they have raised it to
the President’s level and I understand
that our own President
would be there within
the first week of October”.
Obasanjo, however, said
his findings showed that Nigerians
are not drug peddlers
or criminals as being
rumoured,saying, most of
them are businessmen and
professionals that have
helped in contributing to the
economic development of
South Africa.
The former President insisted
noted the thinking by
some South Africans that
some foreigners are taking
their jobs should be killed was
wrong because the foreigners
are contributing to the development
of the country.
“I met more than two Nigerians
who are doing legitimate
businesses and their
turn<strong>over</strong> run into millions of
dollars and they employ 50
to 60 South Africans.
“All these must be expressed
and must be shown
that Nigerians in South Africa
are not drug peddlers,
criminals; there are many
of them that are genuine
businessmen and professionals
and who are making
meaningful contributions
to the economy and
the social life of that country.”
The former President also
commended the South African
President for sending
emissaries to the countries
affected by xenophobia attacks.
Ondo State, the deputy
there is a rift between him
and G<strong>over</strong>nor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Ajayi, who spoke during the
celebration of his 51st birthday
in Akure, noted that he
unknown to many people
even within the g<strong>over</strong>nor’s
In a press conference held
in Lagos to unveil plans for
this occasion, the Deputy
television drama series,
which ruled the nation’s air
promoting national
unity and through its diverse
characters, proffered many
solutions to educational, social
Imodu noted that The Village
Headmaster’s ability to
use drama to pass messages
to teeming audiences is one
between me and my boss”.
Stressing that the media
attacks on his person lately
were expected, the deputy
g<strong>over</strong>nor said, “This is because
the state is heading towards
particularly with the g<strong>over</strong>norship
election coming up
next year.
“All that is being written
“Prior to the last g<strong>over</strong>norship
election in the state
where my boss (Akeredolu)
emerged, I told him (Akeredolu)
that I will support him
in any way possible. Initially,
I didn’t have interest until he
picked me as his deputy.
“I have served at the ward,
local g<strong>over</strong>nment, state and
the federal levels . So, there is
nothing that I’m looking for
that God has not done for me.
I’m a fulfilled man”.
of the attributes that will be
examined at a Roundtable
According to him, “Presenters
Bako will moderate the session.
He also mentioned that
a cross section of various professional
industry guilds will
also make valuable contributions
to the discourse titled;
“Drama – a tool for national
The event continues on
