Obasanjo says S/African President admitted mistake

Former President Olu
segun Obasanjo said,
yesterday, that the President
of South Africa, Cyril
Ramaphosa, admitted that
his country made mistake
<strong>over</strong> xenophobia attacks on
Nigerians among other foreign
nationals and was prepared
to correct it.
Obasanjo said the South
African president spoke when
he paid a courtesy visit to him.
He further said that he was
aware of a planned meeting
between Ramaphosa and
Nigerian President Muhammadu
Buhari on the xenophobia
in South Africa, urging
them to manage the opportunity
properly.
The former President stated
this at his residence in
Abeokuta while speaking to
journalists on what he discussed
with Ramaphosa during
his visit to South Africa.
Obasanjo said, “One of the
major things we discussed is
this issue of xenophobia or
afrophobia.
“I took the opportunity of
being in South Africa about
three or four days ago to actually
pay a courtesy call on
President Cyril Ramaphosa
and he quickly granted me
the opportunity. One of the
major things we discussed is
this issue of xenophobia or
afrophobia.
“One good thing I disc<strong>over</strong>ed
among many is that the
President said to me that there
are so much at stake and
‘whatever mistake we have
made, we have to correct it’.
And I think that was a very
good statement and I know
that he meant it because, he
immediately, said ‘look
,what can we do or should
we do?’
“I think that is all we must
be doing and be saying and
I said my joy is that President
Cyril Ramaphosa is
ready to do what needs to be
done to stop these incidents
Boy, 8, crushed by truck while hawking

AN 8-year-old boy
identified as Kalid
hawking pap was
yesterday crushed by a truck
at Owena in Ondo State.
Sunday Vanguard gathered
that the primary school
pupil died on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the truck
suddenly developed break failure
and, in the process of the
driver avoiding crushing people
by the side of the road,
rammed into another vehicle
being towed.
The towed vehicle reportedly
detached from the towing vehicle
and hit the little boy killing
him on the spot.
The boy reportedly rolled under
the truck and was crushed.
His mangled body was reportedly
removed from under
the truck by symphatisers.
But for the timely intervention
of police detectives,
some irate youths mobilised
to lynch the truck driver.
The corpse was later removed
by policemen from
the ldanre divisional police
station and deposited at the
mortuary of the state specialist
hospital in Akure.
VAT: FG should exempt tax on renewable

Accident, not bandits, killed our
officers —DSS

The Department of State
Services (DSS) has said
that two of its personnel
died Friday night due to an accident
at Gidan Busa Katari,
along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.
The service made the confirmation
in a statement by the
DSS Public Relations Officer,
Peter Afunanya.
The statement explained that
the accident occurred while the
team was heading to one of
the states in the North-West
zone for an operation when
the Hilux vehicle in which
they were travelling somersaulted.
“Two persons died in the
accident while another was
injured. He is presently receiving
required attention in
a medical facility.
“This clarification has become
necessary in order to
debunk fake news making
the round that the gallant
officers were attacked by
bandits,” Afunanya said.

No rift with Akeredolu – Ondo

Ajayi, yesterday, denied that
there is a rift between him
and G<strong>over</strong>nor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Ajayi, who spoke during the
celebration of his 51st birthday
in Akure, noted that he
enjoys “a robust and cordial
relationship” with the g<strong>over</strong>nor
unknown to many people
even within the g<strong>over</strong>nor’s
cabinet.

TV drama series, ‘The Village Headmaster,’
marks 50, makes a comeback

Authority (NTA) and
surviving cast and
crew of the rested TV drama
series, ‘The Village Headmaster,’
under the name The Village
Headmaster Family
(VHMF), has concluded
plans to hold a befitting series
of events in honour of the 50th
anniversary of the popular
television series, which reinforced
traditions, ethics and
values, before it was rested.
In a press conference held
in Lagos to unveil plans for
this occasion, the Deputy
Chairman, VHMF, Dan Imodu
said; “The NTA is partnering
with the surviving
members to celebrate this
landmark attainment of Nigeria’s
first and longest-running
television drama series,
which ruled the nation’s air
waves for more than two decades,
promoting national
unity and through its diverse
characters, proffered many
solutions to educational, social
and political situations.”
Imodu noted that The Village
Headmaster’s ability to
use drama to pass messages
to teeming audiences is one
