Michelle Fadeley, a Joliet
resident, announced
her intention to run for
the 37th District seat in
the Illinois General Assembly
during a campaign
kick-off event held
Sept. 21 at Stray Bar in
Frankfort.
Fadeley is the first Democrat
to announce a bid for
the soon-to-be vacated seat
of current State Rep. Margo
McDermed. Fadeley
joins New Lenox Mayor
Tim Baldermann and Ozinga
Vice President Tim
Ozinga, both Republicans,
as early candidates ahead
of the primaries scheduled
for March.
“I really have been doing
a lot of work in my
community with Illinois
[National Organization for
Women] and co-founding
ERA Illinois, and I was
just so inspired by all the
difference that I was making
that I wanted to take
my civic leadership up to
the next level,” Fadeley
said.
Fadeley’s past political
work should help prepare
her for her run at public
office, she said.
“It really taught me
how to actually get things
done,” Fadeley said. “It
really is a big difference
between having ideas and
then actually making those
ideas happen, and knowing
how to speak with legislators
and knowing how
to get in touch with your
constituents and really
understand what it takes
to pass good legislation in
the State.”
Fadeley said she thought
that the timing to run is
right because of the current
political climate and
that so many other women
are being recognized and
elected to public office.
“I just see a great opportunity
with this election,
and I think that we can
take it,” she said.
If elected, Fadeley said
she would push for legislation
to help the middle
class and working families
via tax breaks and reinvesting
that money in programs
that help them.
“We are supporting our
working families, so that
they can actually earn a
livable wage,” she said.
Fadeley emphasized that
she would be an advocate
for all of her constituents,
not just the ones who may
vote for her.
“I am going to be a
strong voice for them, regardless
of their political
leanings, and I am going
to be someone who gets
things done for the 37th
District,” she said.
