A Culture Of Positivity<br />

Wowing patients with great care and customer<br />

service is key to Siperstein Dermatology Group’s<br />

growth and ability to recruit highly qualified doctors.<br />

In only 8 years, Siperstein Dermatology Group has grown from<br />

a small private practice to 11 board certified doctors, a staff of<br />

over 60, and two state-of-the-art medical facilities in Boca Raton<br />

and Boynton Beach. Robyn Siperstein, M.D., the Yale-trained<br />

founder credits her practice’s success to a culture of positivity<br />

and caring.<br />

“While many people hate to use the term ‘customer service’ in<br />

relation to medicine, it is important. After working at a few other<br />

private practices, I had so many ideas about how I could improve<br />

service and enjoy working with my colleagues,” she says.<br />

Her goal was to create a practice that offered both a high level<br />

of patient care and customer service and plenty of what she calls<br />

“positivity.” She came up with six core values—safety, caring, respect,<br />

integrity, passion and teamwork (SCRIPT)—that would define<br />

the practice, how they treat patients, and how they treat each<br />

other. “Patients can sense that we all really enjoy working with each<br />

other, which improved teamwork and the level of care that we provide.<br />

We tell patients that our goal is to go above and beyond for<br />

them, and we share how we do that: We use checklists, we have<br />

protocols in place, we don’t double book, and we take the time to<br />

make sure all of their needs are addressed.<br />

“We hold monthly staff meetings, and one of our managers puts<br />

out a weekly newsletter on positivity,” says Dr. Siperstein. “She<br />

comments about the wonderful efforts she has seen and shares the<br />

positive reviews we’ve received from patients that week. It helps<br />

get everyone excited and happy to come to work.”<br />

The practice also gives out “Smile Awards,” which recognize team<br />

members who go above and beyond in exemplifying the practice’s<br />

six core values. “Employees nominate each other,” says Dr. Siperstein.<br />

Recipients get a Smile pin, and they wear them at the office.<br />

Siperstein Dermatology group also believes that taking great care<br />

of patients means supporting their communities. Ten percent of all<br />

retail proceeds go to charity, and the practice combines its teambuilding<br />

activities with its charitable efforts. “Typically, we raise at<br />

least $1,000/month. We donate $500 to the charity and use $500<br />

for the team-building activity related to that charity, such as the<br />

Build a Bear. Our last charity was Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital.<br />

First we went to ‘Build a Bear’ and built bears together, and<br />

then took them to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and hand<br />

them out,” she says.<br />

The philosophy has worked well. Over the past eight years, Siperstein<br />

Dermatology Group has been through multiple expansions.<br />

Three years ago, Dr. Siperstein built a new 8,000-square-foot facility<br />

in Boynton Beach and she is in the process of completing a new<br />
