Mr. Sylvester Okonkwo, Acting Chairman of Nigerian Union, Man, 46, jailed 12 yrs for killing girlfriend By Onozure Dania AN Igbosere High Court in Lagos, yesterday, sentenced a 46-year-old man, Tunde Omisakin, to 12 years imprisonment for causing the death of his girlfriend, Tina Toroso. Omisakin was charged with cutting the right hand of his girlfriend with a cutlass, which resulted to her death. He was first arraigned in 2010, but re-arraigned on February 16, 2016 before Justice Adedayo Akintoye, when the former judge handling the case retired. He was charged with a count of manslaughter for which he pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison. The case went for trial and the prosecution called four witnesses. However, at the resumed hearing yesterday, Justice Akintoye ruled that Omisakin was guilty as charged. She said the prosecution was able to prove the ingredients of manslaughter beyond every reasonable doubt. The judge said the prosecution witnesses clearly gave evidence establishing how the incident happened. She held that “the prosecution’s evidence directly pointed to the defendant as the person who caused the death of the deceased, Miss Toroso. “The defendant did not deny that he cut her hand, but said he did not intend to kill her. “I hold that the ingredient of manslaughter has been proven by the prosecution beyond reasonable doubt.” She, however, noted that the defence had said the evidence of the prosecution witnesses was contradictory and that the evidence of the investigating police officers were merely hearsay. Her ruling: “The evidence adduced by the investigating officers during investigations cannot amount to hearsay. “I hold that the evidence of the prosecution is consistent and, therefore, reliable. “This court, hereby, finds Tunde Omisakin guilty of manslaughter and is dully convicted. “He is sentenced to 12 years imprisonment; the years of remand will be deducted from his sentence.” South Africa, NUSA, in the Kwazulu Natal Province, disclosed, yesterday, that the deceased was killed at Empangeni, in the province on Tuesday, October 15. He said Otugo, 41, and a native of Nimo in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra MANY people were trapped and feared dead, yesterday, while scores of persons sustained injuries in Onitsha, Anambra State, as a petrol-laden tanker lost control, crashed into Toronto Hospital at Upper Iweka, along Enugu- Onitsha Expressway and burst into flames. The incident, which occurred at about 12 noon, is the second tanker accident at same spot, that had claimed over 50 lives this year. The latest victim among others, who lost their lives, was a pregnant woman and her threeyear-old baby strapped to her back. According to an eyewitness, the woman had escaped, but went back to her shop to rescue her money. The source stated that the flames, which followed the flow of fuel in the drainage, touched wooden bridge to her shop and as she stepped on it on getting out of the shop, the wood caved in and she fell into the drainage with the child on her back. Efforts to rescue her proved abortive, as the flames leaping out of the fuel-filled drainage scared off sympathisers. The fire from the explosion also consumed about 40 buildings, affected over 500 lock-up shops along the Iweka Road Street Market and spread to Ochanja and Menax markets. The incident, which sparked confusion among residents and traders, reportedly occurred when the tanker laden with petrol lost control opposite Toronto Hospital Onitsha, while descending Zik Roundabout end of Onitsha- Enugu Expressway and veered off the service lane, with the fuel tanker pulling off the truck head and spilling its content, which caught fire. At press time, many youths were seen putting up spirited efforts to put out the fire, with many throwing sachets of pure water into the heart of the fire in a futile, but desperate attempt to stop the inferno. The owner of the centre, Salisu BENIN CITY—GUNMEN suspected to be armed robbers reportedly killed a Police Sergeant identified as Yusuf Igoche escorting a school principal, who was also shot but receiving treatment at the University of Benin teaching Hospital, UBTH. It was gathered that the incident happened around 3p.m. on Tuesday at Benin By-Pass, while Igoche with force number F/ 462248 was escorting the principal to Lagos. The gunmen, who were said to have come out of surrounding Malam Niga and two others were allegedly said to have been arrested. It was gathered that the operatives of a Special Team from the Inspector General of Police from Abuja carried out the operation on the centre located in Kofar Marusa area of Katsina. Reports had it that the primary school pupils died instantly, while the driver of the bus sped off. Residents of the town reportedly pursued the driver and apprehended him at Agbaluku, in Arigidi Akoko and subsequently handed him over to the Police, while the vehicle has been impounded and now in police station. The Divisional Police Officer for Okeagbe Akoko, Johnson Akintola, confirmed the incident adding that the driver of the vehicle is in their custody while investigation into the incident had commenced. The FRSC official in charge of the lkare unit, Yinka Akande, attributed the accident to over speeding by the driver of the Sienna bus within the town. Akande cautioned motorists to always slow down whenever they are passing through towns and villages. When they saw our men, they entered into the bush but didn’t know the road and immediately they reached a dead end, they abandoned the car there. “Our men went there yesterday(Tuesday), but I sent them back today (yesterday) again because there is the possibility that the robbers will come out.” Hit-and-run driver kills 6-yr-old pupil in Ondo By James Ogunnaike ABEOKUTA—A 28-year-old man, Kazeem Yusuf, who beat his 26-year-old wife to death last month, has been arrested by police operatives in Ogun State. Spokesman of the state Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on Monday by the policemen at Enugada Divisional Police Headquarters. Oyeyemi said on September 23, when the incident happened, the suspect ran to the station to report that his wife collapsed on her way to fetch water and gave up the ghost. He added that upon his report, the Divisional Police Officer incharge of Enugada Division, Baba Hamzat, detailed his detectives to the scene, while on close observation of the corpse, the detectives noticed marks of violence on it. This aroused their suspicion that the victim might not have died a natural death. Oyeyemi said while the detectives were searching for the town. He appealed to government to as a matter of urgency install speed breakers on the roads within the schools premises to halt unnecessary and untimely death of school pupils occasioned by reckless driving by motorists plying the roads.
