The Sting defeated teams from Missouri, Indiana and Illinois en route to a second consecutive title. Nine different players scored goals for the Sting in the championship run, while the defense and goaltending allowed only two goals throughout the tournament. The team is Victor Martinez, Drew Drzonek, Miguel Lopez, Jackson Canellis, Preston Cooper, Caden Arguelles, Giovanni Longo, Kyle Harms, Sebastian Tatar, Simon Kapusciarz, Luke Herzic, Georgio Kavalas, Jared Ortiz, Luka Vasiljevic and coach Jake Kozak. That is the way Sandburg’s cross country teams like it. Sandburg’s boys dominated the SouthWest Suburban Conference preseason meet in August, while Ella Jeffries was first individually at Lockport. The same results occurred on Saturday, Oct. 19, as the boys finished with 28 points — placing six in the Top 10 — and Jeffries won her second conference crown of the year. Ben Giblin (14 minutes, 46 seconds) took third, and his twin brother, Will, (14:49.50) took fourth. Sam Rodriguez took sixth, Ismail Tineh seventh, Griffin Lehnhardt eighth and Ahmad Alhayek was ninth. Jeffries ran a 17:46.40, easily outpacing Lockport’s Caroline Turner (18:16.40). Sandburg’s Brielle Morris took ninth. Both squads are at the Plainfield South Regional on Saturday, Oct. 26. Orland Park’s Tommy Leonard of Marist won the East Suburban Catholic Conference meet at Arlington Park with a 15:15.10. Providence survives Providence defensive back Kevin Countryman’s interception of a two-point conversion attempt helped the Celtics survive a 31-30 victory over St. Laurence on Friday, Oct. 18. Quarterback Kevin Conway returned from an injury and threw for 126 yards and added a 45-yard TD run. Looking to avoid its third consecutive and sixth total loss on the season, Sandburg made some early stops on defense that left even the coach of the No. 1-ranked Class 8A team in the state giving the Eagles some credit. “Give a lot of credit to Sandburg early in the game for stopping us for field goals,” Lincoln-Way East Coach Rob Zvonar said. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Griffins’ special teams and Michigan recruit A.J. Henning were more than enough to get the job done. Two field goals, three touchdowns by Henning and a blocked punt return for a touchdown blew the game wide open for the Griffins and led to a 40-0 halftime deficit for the Eagles. “They were just outexecuting us,” Sandburg coach Scott Peters said. “Every senior starter on their team has a Division II [scholarship] offer or better. They were just winning one-onone matchups. They weren’t doing anything special.” The Griffins came in as overwhelming favorites. On an undefeated streak that has seen them defeat the likes of Stevenson, Naperville Central, Bolingbrook and Homewood-Flossmoor, they took a 45-0 lead into halftime last week against the same Lockport Township team that came back from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat Sandburg three weeks ago. “I think our schedule’s worked in our favor,” Zvonar said. “We played extremely tough competition early, and are getting a lot of guys experience while we have a few guys injured right now.” After two opening drives for the Griffins’ offense ended with Dominic Dzioban kicking field goals of 42 and 26 yards, the Griffins were given the ball at the Eagles’ 48-yard line after a short punt. On the next play, Henning took a handoff 48 yards for a score that led to a 13-0 lead. From there, the rout was on. A punt block by the Griffins after the Eagles failed to pick up a first down gave Lincoln- Way East the ball inside the red zone. Henning scored two plays later on a 7-yard run to open up a 20-0 lead before the end of the first quarter. After the Eagles failed to pick up a first down, Henning took the ball at his own 50-yard line and returned the punt 50 yards for a TD. In all, Henning touched the ball three times in a row and scored on all three carries. He finished with six carries for 75 yards and a punt return TD, all in the first half. “We haven’t been able to see him the last two years [because] he’s been injured,” Peters said. “They move him around and John-Michael Scumaci looks for running room against Lincoln-Way East on Friday, Oct. 18. [When] he shows up, he causes problems.” Sandburg managed to pick up a first down, but on the ensuing punt attempt Jalen Hacha was able to get a hand on the ball, which then bounced to linebacker Jake Kramer for a 23-yard TD return. A 35-yard TD run by quarterback Tyler Slager late in the first half rounded out the scoring. A relatively quiet second half saw the Griffins get inside the Eagles’ 5-yard line, only to be stopped. For Sandburg, it ends one of the most grueling three-game stretches in team history, one which saw them play three teams with a combined record of 21-3. They will attempt to avoid their first 2-7 campaign since 2003 by trying to pick up a win next week in the season finale against Bradley-Bourbonnais. “They’re going to work hard next week and give it all on their last opportunity,” Peters said. “This will be the last time some of them will ever put on a helmet and shoulder pads.
