12 FILMS IN CONCERT AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL The pioneering Films in Concert series at the Royal Albert Hall, which is celebrating its 10th year, has featured more than 40 classic films – including The Godfather, Star Wars and Brassed Off – each with their unforgettable scores performed live to picture by one of the world’s leading symphony orchestras. So far, more than 670,000 tickets have been sold across 141 performances. The Harry Potter Film Concert Series returns to the Royal Albert Hall from 1 – 3 November for the fourth instalment from J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Concert – which features Patrick Doyle’s unforgettable score. Following acclaimed, sell-out performances of the earlier films, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will play in high-definition on a 40-foot screen while the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs the magical score live to picture. The series offers visitors the chance to experience cinema’s iconic films with the score performed live by an orchestra in the spectacular surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall. The new 2020 season sees the return of The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, alongside a host of blockbusters including Superman, The Terminator and The Matrix. UNIQLO TATE LATES AT TATE MODERN On Friday 25 October, Tate Modern will mark the third anniversary of Uniqlo Tate Lates with a free evening of art, music and film. These boundary breaking after hours events have attracted over 350,000 visitors since they began in 2016, becoming one of the UKs largest museum late programmes and providing a vital platform for London’s creative talent. On the evening of 25 October, Tate Modern will celebrate Kara Walker’s spectacular Hyundai Commission, Fons Americanus. Taking inspiration from this breath-taking 13-metre-high fountain in the atmospheric surrounds of the Turbine Hall, the Tate Late will explore ideas of freedom, monuments and personal and collective memories. A MUSICAL LUNCH HOUR – LMP AT ST JOHN’S SMITH SQUARE Visitors needing a relaxing lunch hour with some gorgeous classical music shouldn’t miss the London Mozart Players’ next concert in their Piano Explored series, on 6 November at 13.05 at St John’s Smith Square. In a whistlestop hour, acclaimed pianist Howard Shelley takes the audience through an insightful deconstruction of a major piano concerto, followed by a full performance of the work from London Mozart Players directed by Howard from the piano. November’s concert showcases the work of Felix Mendelssohn, with Howard discussing and performing his dazzling Second Piano Concerto. Written in the year of his marriage, Mendelssohn’s acclaimed second concerto for piano is packed with his trademark dramatic themes, breathless energy and heart-melting moments of reflective calm. Above all, it showcases the virtuosic possibilities of the piano to its fullest and, in Howard Shelley’s hands, the concerto becomes a veritable tour de force. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear one of the great interpreters of early Romantic piano music performing it alongside the UK’s longest established chamber orchestra. CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOIR OF WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL The Choir of Westminster Cathedral is recognised as one of the finest in the world, and since 1901 it has occupied a unique and enviable position at the forefront of English church music, famous both for its distinctive continental sound as well as its repertoire. The Choir has made regular recordings since its foundation and continues to do so today, with recent releases including a disc of music by John Sheppard (released 2017) and Alonso Lobo’s Lamentations (released 2016), all available on the prestigious Hyperion label. Comprising up to 25 boy trebles and altos aged 8-13 and ten professional Lay Clerks, the Choir remains the only Catholic Cathedral choir in the world to sing daily Mass and Vespers, whilst also performing concerts at home and abroad, from Europe to the USA.
