FROM THE EDITOR
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
2 l PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2019
The fall marks the beginning of open house season for most independent
schools in South Florida. These events are structured as mini-sessions followed
by brief tours and meet-and-greets with principals, teachers and
sometimes current students. These events provide a unique opportunity to
experience the learning environment while getting a glimpse of the teaching
style and the classrooms. In this issue, we did the legwork to give you a comprehensive
starting point for the best schools in South Florida. We've also put
together a step-by-step guide on how to choose a school so that you can feel
confident in your decision.
The fall also marks the Department of Education's celebration of the
announced 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. An award that recognizes
outstanding public and non-public schools and celebrates excellence in education. Among this years 362
schools, Weston Christian Academy was named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. There
were 11 schools recognized in Florida and only two were faith-based schools. This award is a testament
of their hard work, dedication, and integrity and I'm sure this marks only the beginning of many proud
moments for Weston Christian Academy. On behalf of all of us at Private Schools Guide, we would like to
congratulate WCA on their hard-earned success and well-deserved recognition!
It is hard to believe that we are fast approaching the middle of this school year. With midterm exams
looming and holidays nearing, I want to remind you to be present. Winter vacation can seem like everything
but a break and can be overwhelming and stressful for everyone in your family, especially your students.
Let's make a concerted effort to be responsive, realistic, and resourceful this season. I would like to
express my sincere gratitude to our faithful partners, without whom we would not be able to be on this
mission of service to our community and children. Thank you! And to all our readers, may the end of this
year be filled with hope, health, happiness, and continued success in 2020!
YOUR CHILD,
YOUR CHOICE.
[ A GUIDE TO FINDING THE RIGHT SCHOOL ]
You don't have to suffer from
decision paralysis to understand
how overwhelming
looking for a school can be.
These decisions affect your family and
their future so you must plan carefully.
Before starting your search, think about
what you want a school to do for your
child. A school should inspire academic
excellence and high achievement, engage
students and spark their desire to learn,
and foster the growth and development
of the whole child. Look for a school
that will make this educational experience
the most rewarding for you and
your family.
As you go through the selection process,
make notes about what is important
to you as you consider your choices.
Remember to remain objective and try
to avoid common patterns of thinking
that can lead to biases. Don't only rely
on standardized test scores and rankings.
Try to look at the whole picture,
curriculum, programs, and teachers to
ensure the best fit for your family.
YOUR CHILD'S NEEDS
What are your child's needs? What is
their learning style? Start by making
a list of your child’s strengths and areas
of opportunities. This allows you
to determine what kind of academic,
social, and emotional environment
they need to succeed. Ask your child
for their input. Knowing what they are
passionate about can help you find a
program that will keep them motivated
in a challenging and demanding environment.
MAKE YOUR WISH LIST
Make a list of the five most important
things for your family. This list may
include things such as location, budget,
curriculum, athletics, before or
aftercare, philosophies, religious affiliations,
teaching approaches, safety
policy, or single-sex education. Whatever
is most important for your family,
write it down. Take a good look at this
list and realize that you may not find a
continued on page 7
"Many parents have a long checklist and they expect to find a school that has everything on their list. I tell
them that looking for a school is like looking for a spouse, job, or the perfect home—it’s a compromise or tradeoff.
No school will have everything that’s on your list. If you get 75% to 80% of what’s on your list, you’re doing
great. What do you do about the other 20% or 25% that’s on your list? These things you can often find outside
of school, through after-school programs, travel, volunteer opportunities, or elsewhere."
school that fits every single one of these
and that is ok! It is important to start
with an open mind and understand that
this is a process that may require some
sacrifice.
DO THE RESEARCH
As you begin the selection process, it is
important to consider the location. Prospective
schools should be accessible to
you and your family or within a reasonable
distance from your work or home.
The research is not exciting, but it will
be worthwhile. Take time to navigate
through the school's website. Familiarize
yourself with their teaching method
and their approach to learning. Each
school has a unique mission and vision,
don’t skip over these. You may find that
schools move up or down on your list,
that is ok!
DO THE LEGWORK
Open House events are structured as
mini-sessions where schools showcase
their programs through academic exhibitions,
fine arts and activities fairs, and
faculty/student meet-and-greets. Take
advantage of these opportunities. Contact
the schools you are interested in and
register for open houses early. If possible,
schedule your tour during regular
hours and visit a few classes. These visits
will allow you to observe the school’s
culture, faculty and staff, student engagement,
and family involvement.
INVEST
It is important to remember that you are
not spending money on private education.
You are investing your money in
private education and most importantly,
your child. Being good stewards involves
planning wisely for the cost of private
education. Part of that plan is to look for
ways to maximize your budget through
financial aid, grants, scholarships, and
discounts (such as for households with
siblings or alumni). It is important when
relying on financial aid or scholarships
to note the requirements and deadlines.
Don’t shy away from reaching out to
a school to discuss financing options.
Many schools offer discounts for payments
received in full but are also accommodating
to payment plans.
APPLY EARLY
Once you’ve narrowed your search and
you’ve selected a few schools that you
think will be best for your child, start
the application process. Applying may
not be as simple as submitting a form
online, so start early. Give yourself
enough time to gather required documents
such as transcripts and letters of
recommendations. Make sure you note
testing dates for entrance exams as well.
Does the school adhere to a strict application
deadline? Or do they have a
rolling admissions window? Does the
school have space? Is there a waitlist?
Do they accept post-deadline applications?
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Once a school has made their decision,
they will notify you and provide
you with the next steps of enrollment.
Pay attention to fast-approaching deadlines!
At this point, you may also want
to extend a courtesy note and notify
the schools that your child will not be
attending. This is an exciting time for
your family to celebrate the process and
stay involved. Take the family to a Friday
night football game or check out the
theatre club's latest production. South
Florida’s private schools thrive on community
involvement. They may be rivals
on the field, but in the community,
they are partners with a shared mission
who maintain deep mutual respect. By
getting involved early, you are not only
supporting local programs but giving
your child a chance to get excited about
their future.
FOR CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN SOUTH FLORIDA
Many of our graduates began their educational journey
at Westminster Academy in our preschool program—
creating a strong foundation for them to be exceptional
thinkers, learners, and leaders with a biblical and scholarly
perspective for college and beyond.
Christian scholarship lies at the very core of Westminster
Academy and has, since its founding in 1971, been a
distinctive quality that has set WA apart from all other
educational opportunities in South Florida. It demands
the fusion of faith and intellect as we seek to understand
God’s truth in both natural and supernatural revelation—
the former being found in the created order of the world
around us, and the latter being found in His written Word.
offer in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts, join us for a
38 l PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2019
A
classical approach enhanced by Latin, a strong core
curriculum augmented by a fine arts program,
and a full elementary orchestra are a few of the
qualities that earned Weston Christian Academy a coveted
Blue Ribbon from the U.S. Department of Education this
past September. They are among 11 schools in Florida and 362
schools nationwide to be recognized as 2019 National Blue
Ribbon Schools. WCA was one of the only two faith-based
schools recognized in Florida.
A National Blue Ribbon School recipient has success in
one of two categories: an exemplary high performing school
or a school that has closed achievement gaps among student
subgroups. In the private sector, only about fifty schools are
selected nationally each year comprising less than 1% of all
private schools. The process is rigorous and private schools
first must be nominated by CAPE, the Council of American
Private Education. From there, the U.S. Department of
Education makes the selection.
Weston Christian Academy was recognized as an
exemplary high performing school. As a classically inspired
school, WCA education includes Bible, logic, rhetoric, science,
mathematics, history, and attention to classical literature.
They place a heavy emphasis on reading and mathematics.
Music begins in preschool and advances to instrumental
education in elementary and beyond. Playing in our school
band or orchestra is a requirement for all 4th and 5th graders.
Weston Christian Academy has something rare even on a
national scale: a full elementary orchestra.
On the heels of their national recognition as a Blue Ribbon
School, Weston Christian Academy held a special assembly
for students, parents, and staff where they celebrated the
achievement of this six-year goal. Principal, Bobby McCann,
credits the school's academic success to an exceptional
faculty, a committed staff, cooperative students with a desire
to learn, involved parents that contribute time and effort, and
a supportive leadership team. The tipping point of WCA's
success is this groups shared worldview and singleness of
purpose: to live out the greatest commandment of loving God
fully and loving one’s neighbor.
While this marks the first National Blue Ribbon Award for
Weston Christian Academy, it certainly is only the beginning
of many proud moments to come. School representatives will
attend a gala on Nov. 14 and 15 in Washington, D.C. where U.S.
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will recognize awardees.

The IB Programme®
A Holistic Approach to Education and
The Path to a Global Workplace
The growing global recognition
of the International Baccalaureate
Programmes among universities
and employers is at the
heart of its rapid growth and
development. Between 2012 and
2017, the number of programmes
offered worldwide has grown by
a staggering 39.9%. As of September
3rd of this year, 6,812
programmes were being offered
worldwide across 157 countries.
To better understand why the IB
is is more than an academic qualification,
you must understand the
objective of the program.
What is an IB Education?
The International Baccalaureate®
(IB) offers education curricula
that are comprised of four
programmes for students from
ages 3-19. The curricula focus on
teaching students to think critically
and independently with an international
approach, equipping
students with the knowledge and
compassion to appreciate and respect
cultural differences.
Four Programmes
CS PSG 2018
The IB Primary Years Programme
(PYP) is for children ages 3 - 12.
Through an inquiry-led transdisciplinary
framework, students
deepen their learning by developing
their conceptual understandings;
strengthening their knowledge
and skills across and beyond
subject areas.
The IB Middle Years Programme
(MYP) is for students
ages 11-16 and promotes the fundamental
concepts of intercultural
understanding, communication
and holistic learning. This fiveyear
programme is a challenging
framework that encourages students
to make practical connections
between their studies and
the real world.
The IB Diploma Program (DP)
is for students ages 16-19 who will
learn to reflect on the nature of
knowledge, complete independent
research and undertake
projects that involve community
service.
The IB Career-related Programme
(CP) is also designed for
students ages 16-19. The career-related
study provides practical, real-world
approaches to learning;
and the CP core helps them to
develop skills and competencies
required for lifelong learning.
How does an IB Compare?
The DP is considered more than
a means to obtain college credit in
high school. The IB assessment is
holistic and course examinations
include oral assessments and presentations.
Students must also
demonstrate their ability to reflect,
evaluate, and improve their
performance.
What is a Global Workplace?
With its rapid growth and development,
universities and employers
around the world recognize
and value the IB mission, 'to
develop inquiring, knowledgeable
and caring young people
who help to create a better and
more peaceful world through
intercultural understanding and
respect.' With many companies
operating in a more global world
than before, the idea of cultural
fluency and resilience is making
IB World School students not
only more desirable employees
but invaluable.
The IB represents a holistic approach
to education and a path
to educating the whole person,
helping them become adaptable
and effective stewards of a diverse
society.
The space and materials in our classroom are carefully selected and arranged to promote active learning. The
classroom is divided into “interest areas” organized around specific kinds of play. We provide children a sense of
control over the events of the day by planning a consistent daily routine that enables children to anticipate what
happens next. A central element of our daily routine is the “plan-do-review-sequence;” other key elements are
small and large group times, greeting time and outside time.
observe, inquire and grow) encourages our students to develop the necessary skills that allow them to be
successful learners in our global community. Our approach at our IB school is unique in its commitment to
bringing a global emphasis to our core curriculum and developing a strong community of learners that value
lifelong learning.
