The fall marks the beginning of open house season for most independent 

schools in South Florida. These events are structured as mini-sessions followed 

by brief tours and meet-and-greets with principals, teachers and 

sometimes current students. These events provide a unique opportunity to 

experience the learning environment while getting a glimpse of the teaching 

style and the classrooms. In this issue, we did the legwork to give you a comprehensive 

starting point for the best schools in South Florida. We've also put 

together a step-by-step guide on how to choose a school so that you can feel 

confident in your decision. 

The fall also marks the Department of Education's celebration of the 

announced 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. An award that recognizes 

outstanding public and non-public schools and celebrates excellence in education. Among this years 362 

schools, Weston Christian Academy was named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. There 

were 11 schools recognized in Florida and only two were faith-based schools. This award is a testament 

of their hard work, dedication, and integrity and I'm sure this marks only the beginning of many proud 

moments for Weston Christian Academy. On behalf of all of us at Private Schools Guide, we would like to 

congratulate WCA on their hard-earned success and well-deserved recognition! 

It is hard to believe that we are fast approaching the middle of this school year. With midterm exams 

looming and holidays nearing, I want to remind you to be present. Winter vacation can seem like everything 

but a break and can be overwhelming and stressful for everyone in your family, especially your students. 

Let's make a concerted effort to be responsive, realistic, and resourceful this season. I would like to 

express my sincere gratitude to our faithful partners, without whom we would not be able to be on this 

mission of service to our community and children. Thank you! And to all our readers, may the end of this

You don't have to suffer from 

decision paralysis to understand 

how overwhelming 

looking for a school can be. 

These decisions affect your family and 

their future so you must plan carefully. 

Before starting your search, think about 

what you want a school to do for your 

child. A school should inspire academic 

excellence and high achievement, engage 

students and spark their desire to learn, 

and foster the growth and development 

of the whole child. Look for a school 

that will make this educational experience 

the most rewarding for you and 

your family. 

As you go through the selection process, 

make notes about what is important 

to you as you consider your choices. 

Remember to remain objective and try 

to avoid common patterns of thinking 

that can lead to biases. Don't only rely 

on standardized test scores and rankings. 

Try to look at the whole picture, 

curriculum, programs, and teachers to 

ensure the best fit for your family. 

YOUR CHILD'S NEEDS 

What are your child's needs? What is 

their learning style? Start by making 

a list of your child’s strengths and areas 

of opportunities. This allows you 

to determine what kind of academic, 

social, and emotional environment 

they need to succeed. Ask your child 

for their input. Knowing what they are 

passionate about can help you find a 

program that will keep them motivated 

in a challenging and demanding environment. 

MAKE YOUR WISH LIST 

Make a list of the five most important 

things for your family. This list may 

include things such as location, budget, 

curriculum, athletics, before or 

aftercare, philosophies, religious affiliations, 

teaching approaches, safety 

policy, or single-sex education. Whatever 

is most important for your family, 

write it down. Take a good look at this 

list and realize that you may not find a

No school will have everything that’s on your list. If you get 75% to 80% of what’s on your list, you’re doing

and that is ok! It is important to start 

with an open mind and understand that 

this is a process that may require some 

sacrifice. 

DO THE RESEARCH 

As you begin the selection process, it is 

important to consider the location. Prospective 

schools should be accessible to 

you and your family or within a reasonable 

distance from your work or home. 

The research is not exciting, but it will 

be worthwhile. Take time to navigate 

through the school's website. Familiarize 

yourself with their teaching method 

and their approach to learning. Each 

school has a unique mission and vision, 

don’t skip over these. You may find that 

schools move up or down on your list, 

that is ok! 

DO THE LEGWORK 

Open House events are structured as 

mini-sessions where schools showcase 

their programs through academic exhibitions, 

fine arts and activities fairs, and 

faculty/student meet-and-greets. Take 

advantage of these opportunities. Contact 

the schools you are interested in and 

register for open houses early. If possible, 

schedule your tour during regular 

hours and visit a few classes. These visits 

will allow you to observe the school’s 

culture, faculty and staff, student engagement, 

and family involvement. 

INVEST 

It is important to remember that you are 

not spending money on private education. 

You are investing your money in 

private education and most importantly, 

your child. Being good stewards involves 

planning wisely for the cost of private 

education. Part of that plan is to look for 

ways to maximize your budget through 

financial aid, grants, scholarships, and 

discounts (such as for households with 

siblings or alumni). It is important when 

relying on financial aid or scholarships 

to note the requirements and deadlines. 

Don’t shy away from reaching out to 

a school to discuss financing options. 

Many schools offer discounts for payments 

received in full but are also accommodating 

to payment plans. 

APPLY EARLY 

Once you’ve narrowed your search and 

you’ve selected a few schools that you 

think will be best for your child, start 

the application process. Applying may 

not be as simple as submitting a form 

online, so start early. Give yourself 

enough time to gather required documents 

such as transcripts and letters of 

recommendations. Make sure you note 

testing dates for entrance exams as well. 

Does the school adhere to a strict application 

deadline? Or do they have a 

rolling admissions window? Does the 

school have space? Is there a waitlist? 

Do they accept post-deadline applications? 

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? 

Once a school has made their decision, 

they will notify you and provide 

you with the next steps of enrollment. 

Pay attention to fast-approaching deadlines! 

At this point, you may also want 

to extend a courtesy note and notify 

the schools that your child will not be 

attending. This is an exciting time for 

your family to celebrate the process and 

stay involved. Take the family to a Friday 

night football game or check out the 

theatre club's latest production. South 

Florida’s private schools thrive on community 

involvement. They may be rivals 

on the field, but in the community, 

they are partners with a shared mission 

who maintain deep mutual respect. By 

getting involved early, you are not only 

supporting local programs but giving 

your child a chance to get excited about 

their future.

classical approach enhanced by Latin, a strong core 

curriculum augmented by a fine arts program, 

and a full elementary orchestra are a few of the

Blue Ribbon from the U.S. Department of Education this 

past September. They are among 11 schools in Florida and 362 

schools nationwide to be recognized as 2019 National Blue 

Ribbon Schools. WCA was one of the only two faith-based

A National Blue Ribbon School recipient has success in 

one of two categories: an exemplary high performing school

Weston Christian Academy was recognized as an
