TO LEARN TO LOVE TO LEARN

FROM THE EDITOR

I am so proud of

the private schools

and programs that

fill the pages of this

issue. They are proof

that South Florida

is an educational

pioneer, creating

Elizabeth Rivas intentionally diverse

Editor-in-Chief

schools, championing

inclusion, and

committing to new educational initiatives in an

fast-changing world. Among these programs, you

will find a world of inspiration through innovative

curricula that are personalized, experiential,

and immersive. These schools are no longer just

preparing students for college but equipping them

with skills that are vital for life success through a

whole-child approach. The amazing response to

the shuttering of their school buildings has taught

their students to be adaptable and resilient.

I want to congratulate L’Atelier School who is

celebrating 25 years as pioneers of the Reggio

Emilia Method in South Florida. As founding

members of the North Reggio Emilia Alliance, they

birthed The Center for the Culture of Creativity

(CCC), investing in connecting and developing

creativity as a powerful force in our community.

They actively run a non-profit organization that

invests in community teachers, designed to include

quality time for professional development as an

inherent right of educators. L'Atelier has developed

a strong collaboration with educators from Reggio

Emilia, Italy, and has over 50 publications and

articles on the development of children through

creative learning.

I also want to congratulate Lehrman

Community Day School and St. Hugh Catholic

School for their 60 years of dedication and service

to our community and to our families.

We see new areas of mastery emerge in children

from all forms of literacy, problem-solving, selfexpression,

self-regulation, and interpersonal

skills. The return of ethical, intellectual, social and

emotional development of students, grounded in

values, will help them make responsible choices on

a lifelong basis regardless of the trends they may

encounter. Like me, I hope you are encouraged

and inspired by the quality education our schools

in South Florida are providing. They are doing

important work in their shared mission of changing

the world through education and preparing future

leaders and global citizens.

A

Better

Normal

What is normal anymore? These days, life may look a

whole lot different than it did two months ago. Our

routines went out the window and we are in a struggle to get

back on track. If you are anything

like me, I'm sure you have dealt with

a range of emotions you didn't even

know you could have. You are also

probably tired of hearing about sticking

to routines, and limiting screen

time, and using your time wisely, etc.

I struggle with that too because I have,

in fact, not learned any new skills yet.

I haven't picked up any new hobbies.

I haven't worked out in my garage every

morning. My energy has been focused

on adapting and trying to find

a new routine that works for me and

my family. Trust me, I understand

the importance of having a routine. I

understand that routines create predictability.

I understand that when we

don't have predictability, uncertainty

creeps in with its faithful companion,

anxiety. But I am also aware that there is a false sense of security

from our dependence on "certainty". We use certainty as

our security blanket and take comfort in it. Like most adults,

I'm just trying to survive with uncertainty. I'm trying to quickly

adapt to everything that is changing around me. But what

about kids?

"My hope is that

our new normal,

today, exposes

what was wrong

with our old

normal, yesterday,

and sets us up for

a better normal,

tomorrow."

-Dwayne Reed,

Educator

I hear a lot of concern about kids falling behind. But what if

our kids could take away a much bigger lesson from all of this?

A lesson that they perhaps couldn't have learned at the pace

they were going? What if children learn how

to fend for themselves and become self-sufficient?

What if they learn that real value is in

immaterial things, like our health, our planet,

and human connection? That family is irreplaceable?

What if their idea of heroes is redefined

by all this? What if out of this chaos, we

get a passionate generation focused on altruism?

What if they go back to school buildings

with a renewed sense of curiosity, eager to

learn and collaborate with their peers? What

if because of all the drastic changes, they

choose to adapt.

This dreadful situation will certainly impact

all of us. But we all have the opportunity to

take this bleak situation and make the absolute

best with it and I believe that children

have a real opportunity to emerge from this in

a better position.

I don't want to go back to normal. Times of upheaval are always

opportunities for radical change. This may be our oncein-a-lifetime

chance for a revolutionary transformation of society

and a better normal. It's up to you.

L'ATELIER SCHOOL

CHANGING THE PANORAMA OF EDUCATION IN MIAMI

L'Atelier is a unique school with the strong belief in the importance of investing

in a culture of creativity. Being such a collaborative place, parents often have

a lot of questions about what education at L'Atelier looks like. Here is a Q&A

with the Founder and Executive Director of L'Atelier Preschool and the Center

for Culture of Creativity, Simonetta Cittadini.

Q: Congratulations on your 25th anniversary!

L’Atelier is the first Reggio Emilia inspired school in

the community. What has this meant to the school

and the community?

L’Atelier was conceived as a community project in 1995

where the mission was to bring quality creative and

innovative education to all children through the unique

experiences parents, children and teachers developed

at school. The school celebrates its 25th anniversary, inspired

since 1995 by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, with

the great accomplishment that all children exit L’Atelier

with a solid sense of self, a well rounded attitude towards

the world and a defined thinking power. They are

creative and kind human beings, thanks to their families

who constantly invest in their cultural and divergent

thinking. They successfully enter Elementary schools

of their choice and pursue a career connected to their

identity.

L’Atelier invested not only in developing a school but a

system that could work as a launcher of best practice

in the community. In fact, our attitude of “Open Doors,

Puertas Abiertas” was to always reach out to others in

the local, national and international communities.

L’Atelier, through the Florida Reggio Collaborative for the

Rights of Children ( 501c 3) brought to Miami two exhib-

its from Reggio Emilia, Italy - The Hundred Languages

of Children in 2005 and The Wonder of Learning in 2015

which changed the panorama of education in the community.

It also participated in several community development

programs with less privileged communities.

The international professional development initiatives

offered by the school sustain a global dialogue that is

mutually enriching.

We believe that the vision for this community project

must be based on quality and for this we invest in

personal development, professional development, and

community development. The child is not a student, he

or she is a human being full of dreams,

emotions, desires and wonders.

We believe that after 25 years we

have all gained values that were

built with the community.

We are a city that speaks

investment, collaboration,

quality, creativity, innovation,

and also connection, mutual

support, and attention to relationships

and details. All

of this can be called a city that develops, defends

and fights for the rights for children.

Q: How do children learn at L’Atelier?

Children are innate creative learners. They

are born with a myriad of capacities that

they discover in connection with life happenings.

At L’Atelier, the unique creative educational

proposal is offered as a system of a

school seen as an atelier. The environments

resemble the child’s thinking styles. They

are diverse, aesthetically pleasant, divergent,

provoking, curious, and empathetic.

School should be the mirror

of childhood, and as

such it must respect

the child’s identity

by offering,

especially

in the most

important

years of life,

the inherent

values of the culture of

childhood.

Children learn with friends and in dialogue

with adults, immersed in ateliers or studios

that bring the marvelous essence of human

kind, nature, the universe, and the world of

words and numbers to life through materials

of all kinds. They learn by discussing and

drawing, imagining and creating, using the

many languages of the body, the sound and

the light. Children compare and contrast,

raise points of view and learn to agree to disagree.

They make use of dialogue, documentation,

reflection, and revisiting. They are

experimenters, communicators and collaborators,

creators and problems solvers which

are all needed for 21st century learning.

Children work in large community projects

as well as with mixed age groups at times.

Children who travel the entire journey at

L’Atelier exit with “pebbles in their pockets”

as Professor Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the

Reggio Emilia Approach, used to say. When

asked what happens to these children as

they go on, he stated, these children “will

have an extra pocket” from which to cope,

thrive, learn, and

relate throughout

life. These pebbles

are in these

pockets and

they last an

entire lifetime.

Q: In this unprecedented time of

the COVID-19, how do you assess your

educational experience? How have children

reacted?

“ A school is meant to be a bridge

between the children, the community

and the city. This is the only way we can

all learn how to improve our society.”

With the threat of the COVID-19 we decided

to close overnight and transform

our school into

a virtual school. We

were faced with a

strange feeling.

How could an

Atelier School be

a virtual experience

if we base

Simonetta Cittadini

our daily experiences

in environments and

materials? But we knew

we counted on key factors: the collaboration

with parents, the creativity of children, the

relationships we have built throughout the

years, and the pedagogy of the faculty.

These essential factors have made our virtual

school an experience like no other that celebrates

in full force the 25th anniversary of

L’Atelier.

We find the pebbles. We see the children in

action. We notice their adaptability, capability

to change, their flexibility and their immense

creativity. With their parents they have

transformed their homes into Ateliers and

enjoy daily experiences away from the screen,

in nature, in bodyness, in discovery and in

design.

More than ever we are thankful to our community

for being the mirror of our own experience

and for making visible that the child is

capable. And so is the family and the school.

At L'Atelier School, we hope for a capable

world. Re-invented. Healthy. Connected.

L’Atelier has given birth to the CCC, Center for the Culture of Creativity. This center is

a big atelier for the entire community 0-99 years old and promotes creativity as an

intelligence. It is a place that offers an innovative and provocative environment that

inspires, mentors, and expands opportunities to discover and uncover the innate

creativity of every human being. L’Atelier School and the CCC work in collaboration

both for the school families and the community.

Students from Conchita Espinosa Academy’s

upper school Music and Senior Dance Masteries

spent a fantastic three days in New York City,

where they had the opportunity to continue

to grow in their knowledge and passion for

dance and music through master classes and

performances at prestigious institutions.

Music Mastery spent time at New York

University, where they took a master class

in chamber music, toured the music school,

participated in an introduction to jazz

improvisation and "jam" session, and watch an

official rehearsal of the NYU Big Band. They

went to Dizzy's Jazz Club at Lincoln Center,

where they watch Cyro Baptista's Glosso

Lalia, took a Broadway-style master class that

centered on sight-reading and performance,

and were the first audience to watch the New

York Philharmonic perform the US premier

of Babylon Suite, a new work by Franz Welser-

Möst, and had a personalized tour of Carnegie

Hall.

Dance Mastery took classes at Paul Taylor

Studios, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, took

a Fosse-style workshop at Broadway

Dance Center, and learned choreography

from Hairspray at Step by Step Studios. They

watched New York City Ballet's Program II,

which included Justin Peck's world premier,

Jerome Robbins' In G Major, and Christopher

Wheeldon's DGV: Dance à Grande Vitesse.

Together the groups toured Rockafeller Center,

went ice skating, toured Radio City Music Hall

and watched the Broadway revival of West Side

Story.

EDUCATION TRENDS

SEL

in the time of

CORONA

Remember the novel "Love

in the time of Cholera"?

The emotional love story

that took place during the

world's longest running pandemic. A

tale that portrayed lovesickness as

both a physical and emotional plague,

like the world was experiencing at

that time with cholera. Well, here we

are, in the middle of the COVID-19

pandemic and we are seeing adults and

children suffering from the physical and

emotional plague of widespread panic

and stress. It got me thinking about the

benefits of social-emotional learning

in the time of yet another pandemic.

While many are seeing this school year

as a wash academically, it could very

well play out to be one that teaches

students some of the most important

lessons like resilience, grit, and

adaptability. Weaving social-emotional

learning into the beautiful tapestry of

curriculum, pedagogy, and school culture

is critical for children to thrive not

just as students but someday as parents,

entrepreneurs, leaders—as global

citizens.

So, what is SEL?

SEL stands for Social-Emotional

Learning. It is the process through

which children (and adults) develop

self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal

skills that are vital for success

in life—academically, professionally,

and socially. SEL helps us understand

and manage emotions, set and achieve

positive goals, feel and show empathy

for others, establish and maintain

positive relationships, and make

responsible decisions. Everything from

resilience, anger management, conflict

resolution, organizational skills, stress

management, adapting to change,

problem solving, it all comes down

to understanding ourselves and our

emotions, the respect and empathy

we have for others, and our ability to

make responsible decisions.

BROWARD

History of SEL

In 1994, the meetings between researchers,

practitioners, and child advocates led to

the formation of CASEL—today known as

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and

Emotional Learning. Their goal was to establish

high-quality, evidence-based social and

emotional learning (SEL) to promote positive

development in children as an essential

part of preschool through high school

education. In 1997, through the publishing

of Promoting Social and Emotional Learning:

Guidelines for Educators, the pioneering

book defined SEL and demonstrated the

significance of SEL education for all students.

By 2006 CASEL had published an implementation

guide and provided essential

tools and resources for SEL implementation

in schools. After more than two decades of

research and studies showing its positive and

long-term impact, we are starting to see it

widely adopted to the development and

education of the whole child.

One of the biggest trends in education for

the new decade is SEL Education. It is often

referred to as the missing piece of education

as research shows that SEL leads to better

academic performance, improved behavior,

long-term and global impact, improved

economic mobility, and improved emotional

distress (think less depression, anxiety, and

stress). The main boost comes on the

heels of interest and support from teachers,

administrators and the education community.

With data now supporting some very

favorable outcomes, SEL is becoming as

important as academics.

Measuring SEL

Since the 2011 release of CASEL’s

meta-analysis, studies have found that students

who receive high-quality SEL instruction

have achievement scores on average of

11 percentile points higher than students

who did not receive SEL instruction. The

three-year study by The Organisation of

Economic Co-operation and Development

(OECD) revealed that lack of social-emotional

learning had a strong detrimental

affect not just in academics but also in work

and life outcomes. Academic achievement

is dependent on perseverance, self-control,

responsibility, curiosity, and emotional stability

and the lack of these skills can prevent

the effective use of cognitive skills such as

verbal or numerical proficiency. To further

uphold the importance of SEL, the report

stated “researchers at Columbia University

concluded that for every dollar a school

spends on social-emotional learning programs,

it sees an eleven dollar return on

its investment,” indicating the investment in

SEL is worthwhile.

Children are being taught the basics like

reading and math but indirectly learning

about persistence, grit, and responsibility

as well. It is hard to know and measure

how this pandemic will affect our students'

futures but I can assure you that they

are still learning. They are learning how

to respond by watching how everyone

around them responds.

This is a unique opportunity to start fostering

social and emotional development

at home. Start by teaching cooperation

and conflict resolution, encourage emotional

expression, practice self-regulation,

and teach them to be empathetic and

altruistic. Social and emotional learning

should be the greatest takeaway from this

pandemic.

FROM THE EDITOR

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

As we begin to plan

for summer break,

I’d be remiss to ignore

the threat that

currently looms

over us daily. Will

summer camp even

happen this year?

My answer is, plan

on it! The uncertainty,

while overwhelming,

can be a gentle reminder that every

decision is completely ours to make. The unprecedented

closures of school buildings will

create a great need for enrichment programs

this summer. As you begin to plan, I encourage

you to remember that this too will pass. If

you need some reassurance, I encourage you

to reach out to schools, camps, and enrichment

programs. I assure you that they have

proactive plans in place and can answer most

of your questions.

With that said, I am so extremely encouraged

to see the growth and development of summer

enrichment programs in South Florida.

ON THE COVER

Programs are evolving at the pace of our kids.

They are adapting to the interest and needs

of our community. Our directory consolidates

most programs in our area into a simple, clear,

and concise guide designed to be a starting

point for families.

This year has brought many challenges, but

what will matter most is our response. This

is important because, right now, what our

children are actually learning is how to respond

to uncertainty and change. We have the

greatest opportunity to teach them by example.

We know that quarantines will end and

we will go back to our respective semblance

of normal. Let’s make sure we return with a

greater appreciation for the things that matter

most—people. Our families, our educators,

our healthcare workers, and all of the workers

who kept our life going when the world came

to a screeching halt. Let us not take for granted

the amount of effort that goes into preparing

spaces and programs for enrichment. We

do not know exactly what this summer will

look like but I have a strong feeling it will be

the BEST. SUMMER. YET!

L’Atelier, the first Reggio Emilia inspired school

in Miami is unique for its approach to creative

education where children from one year old to

own knowlege with the community of

teachers and parents. L’Atelier and the

Center for the Culture of Creativity

offer an immersive six-week summer

camp, Creativity in Found objects:

Re-purposing Materials.

NO ONE DOES IT LIKE

THE REAL FOOD ACADEMY

WHY YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO SPEND AT LEAST ONE WEEK AT THE REAL

FOOD ACADEMY THIS SUMMER

The Real Food Academy is a unique place

where your child will not only make friends

and have fun but will be immersed in real

foods and nutritional knowledge. Your child

will leave our kitchen with the confidence

and nutritional awareness that will positively

influence their eating habits for life. This

can be very difficult, if not impossible, for

l SUMMER CAMP FUN / 2019

parents to do on their own. Here is why we

have succeeded where many have failed in a

very important task.

First and foremost, it is safe to say that there

is nothing more important to parents than

the health of their children. That is a fact.

It is also a fact that nothing has a greater

impact on your child’s health than the food

they eat. When they make the right food

choices (what we call “real food” at The

Real Food Academy) they will feel better,

sleep better, think better, look better and

ultimately reduce the chances of serious

illnesses. As a parent, one of the most

important things you can do is instill healthy

eating habits while they are young. We

help cultivate this with an appreciation for

real ingredients and a fun way of exposing

them to new foods. Studies have shown

that children that learn to prepare their own

food have a tendency to skip less healthy or

processed foods. By enrolling your child at

the Real Food Academy, you open the door

to a whole new world of nutrition education.

Our kitchens are the ultimate learning labs

where we engage all of their senses daily.

Your child will be taught food safety and

cooking techniques that will improve their

math, science, literacy, and fine motor skills.

Nutrition education may be incomplete

without the hands-on approach and

experiential learning we strive to provide at

the Real Food Academy.

At The Real Food Academy’s culinary

camp, your child will be surrounded by other

children who are his or her age. This sets the

stage for a powerful phenomenon we have

witnessed over the years—positive peer

pressure! We all share the need to connect

and kids are no different. By working

together and observing each other, we have

seen kids share new experiences, adopt

healthy habits and attitudes, and increase

their self-confidence. We see this when

they get to experience the tangible results

of their work. Most kids proudly exclaim,

“yummy, this tastes great”! Even the pickiest

eaters will open their minds, challenge

their palettes, and join in with, “yeah, this

IS yummy”! We foster this type of positive

influence at our camps because we know

kids are more vulnerable to the influence

and opinions of their peers. This is almost

impossible to achieve at home.

Each week, under the supervision and

direction of a trained chef, your child will

assemble dozens of dishes from start to

finish. They will have an opportunity to

showcase their creativity and work with

other young chefs as they learn to work

as a team. Your child will create meals

that look great, taste great, and more

importantly, are made from the healthiest,

nutrient-dense ingredients. The immediate

gratification that kids experience helps

boost their self-esteem and confidence.

Of course, eating their creation is the best

part! Kids love to show off their hard work

and accomplishments. When you pick up

your child each afternoon, expect them to

run toward you, food in hand, beaming with

pride as they share their creations with you.

The Real Food Academy cooking camp

promotes healthy relationships with food

and confidence through self-expression.

Don’t be surprised if it also ignites a life-long

passion or channels purpose into a Michelin

Star career.

Note: When you register for camp, you will

receive an email from the Real Food Academy

requesting some information about your child.

We have found that knowing a little bit about

your child ahead of time will help us give your

child the very best experience possible. For

example, How old are they? Are they a picky

eater? Are they painfully shy, etc.?

Summer

Enrichment

Engagement + Experience + Enjoyment

As our community deals with indefinite school closures and

canceled sports and activities, millions of students and their

parents grapple to settle into this new normal. With stay-at-home

orders getting extended, the possibility of not finishing the school

year becomes a real possibility that will certainly impact our children.

For seniors, this is devastating. They won’t get to say goodbye

to their friends as they go off in all directions to start their college

careers.

Spring is here, and while it usually marks the beginning of registration

for summer camps and enrichment programs, with all the uncertainty,

the fate of these programs is now in flux. The fear that

this could lead to significant learning loss is a real one for every

parent and one that would leave families trying to catch-up during

the summer break. But summer programs remain hopeful and expect

to be up and running, ready to welcome kids come June. They

continue to adapt their strategies, policies, and procedures as they

prepare to offer as much of their programs as possible. Should that

be the case, enrichment programs will be more important than ever

this summer.

We are looking at summer through the same lens of hope. For many

families, camps are the solution to child-care problems left behind

by school breaks. The reality is that parents are not just looking

to keep their children busy. They are looking to keep them structured

in an academically aligned program where their kids can lead

and take initiative, express themselves creatively,

foster relationships with others, and where their

curiosity is valued and rewarded. They are looking

for engagement.

But what does engagement really look like in kids?

Experts say that kids who are engaged are attracted

to their tasks. They ask questions and

become actively involved, taking proactive ownership

of their work. This process leads to the dedication

and passionate commitment to developing

and improving skills. Engaged children also persist

despite challenges. They embrace obstacles and

view difficult tasks as opportunities. This leads to

the belief that their most basic abilities can be developed

through dedication and hard work—they

develop a growth mindset. The last characteristic

of an engaged child is visible excitement about

their accomplishments. They take as much pride

in the discipline of their efforts as they do in their

achievements. Summer programs offer kids a

unique opportunity for engagement through experiences

that are different from those they get anywhere

else. They offer a chance to reinforce the

concepts and skills they already have while providing

a mentally engaging and fun environment in

areas of interest. Improving skills and academics

while having fun are both necessary for engagement

to happen during these experiences.

to their interests and needs. They get to immerse

themselves in experiences that are personalized and

tailored just for them and other like-minded kids. Part

of the experience will also be the people they meet.

From the friendships they build along the way to the

mentors they learn from, these are the relationships

that can be valuable and pay off in the long run. These

invaluable experiences give kids a sense of self and

community that they will build on well into adulthood.

True enrichment is the beautiful tapestry of engagement,

experience, and enjoyment woven intricately

together. While enrichment is not unique to summer

programs, some aspects are. There are very few

places where kids can dive deep into focused activities,

discover and express themselves freely, and

have wholehearted fun. Summer programs don’t just

offer unique opportunities—they specialize in them!

Summer is about investing in your child’s physical,

social, emotional, and cognitive development. It is

about encouraging them to make new friends, try new

things, and to trust their ability to do both.

Experiences play a major role in child development,

with the most crucial being during the earliest

years of a child’s life. Good experiences can

shape behavior and personality. Enrichment programs

specifically focus on teaching, modeling,

and practicing social skills. For kids who might

struggle with disabilities, these quality educational

interventions and experiences can help leave a

mark on their development. Summer enrichment

programs provide unique experiences for kids to

try new things at their own pace. They allow them

to explore and expand their minds to gain new

skills. But perhaps the most underrated is the opportunity

to experiment and take risks, free of

judgment or failure. As children continue to grow

and evolve, so do the programs that are adapting
