The first weeks of 

our new school year 

have provided good 

space and time for 

reflection on what 

we want our goals

year. We have 

constantly seen fast

and with it, we 

see the challenges 

that students face. It is important we continue to 

recognize, appreciate, and encourage our students 

as they work towards fulfilling their aspriations. 

Featured in this issue is our article, Academic

tirelessly to foster these special programs so that 

our children not only achieve their potential but 

receive the merited recognition.

Solar Car Challenge 

North Broward Preparatory School has an incredible 

group of high school Robotics students who recently proved 

that dedication and passion for what you love to do is a winning 

combination! For the first time ever, the NB Robotics team of 

students set about designing and building a solar car. Not just 

some remote controlled toy – but an actual large-scale car operating 

on solar power that would end up taking second place in 

a national competition. 

In collaboration with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), 

North Broward Prep’s STEAM (Science Technology 

Engineering Arts and Math) program enables students to take 

science, engineering, and technology education to a whole new 

level. Under the direction of North Broward Robotics teacher 

Mr. Steve Craw and the mentorship of several professional engineers 

including two from Motorola, the Robotics team (also 

known as Eaglebotics) set out to conceptualize, design, build 

and ultimately race a solar-powered car. Beginning last September 

and stretching into the summer, students worked six 

days a week on their prototype, dedicating many hours including 

time spent after school, on holiday breaks and on weekends. 

They used chromology tubing -- a high-strength steel -- and 

complex welding techniques to build the car. The car is built 

with a solar panel that when fully charged, allows the car to run 

for six hours a day. 

The team worked diligently on their solar car, but hit a glitch 

in June when the car was ready to have shocks put on the front 

end, but there was an issue with the design, and the car wouldn’t 

drive. They analyzed the problem and installed some steel bars 

that thankfully resolved the problem. In July, the team set out 

for Dallas, Texas to prepare for the national race at the Texas 

Motor Speedway, a NASCAR track where they would compete 

with 30 other high schools from all around the country. Considering 

this was their first-ever solar car, Steve Craw says his 

goal was to see the car start the race, endure the race, and finish, 

regardless of how they placed. But of course, it’s hard not to 

want to win. 

Thirty competitors arrived in Texas, and six had to drop out 

before the race even began due to problems with their cars. 

Beginning on July 16th, after official “scrutineering” to make 

sure the cars were fit to compete, 24 competitors took to the 

track to race and began a four-day competition. Our Eaglebotics 

solar car completed 321 laps and raced for a total of 481 

½ miles! The competition was fierce, but North Broward took 

2nd place in the Solar Car Challenge – an unbelievable feat for 

a first-year run. 

Next year’s race is going to be a cross-country challenge, racing 

from Dallas, Texas to Palmdale, California. Steve Craw 

and his Robotics team are going for the gold. Says Craw, “It’s 

been a great ride. There’s a spirit and artistry that goes into 

this. Watching the impossible become possible.” With the trial 

and error process that comes along with the territory when 

you undertake building a solar car from scratch, you have to 

have a certain amount of grit and resilience. As Steve Craw 

says, learning to overcome failure is the most important takeaway 

students get from this experience. “You don’t learn from 

success – you learn from failure.” 

At the core of the collaboration between MIT and Nord 

Anglia Education Schools is the reflection of MIT’s philosophy 

of ‘Mens et Manus’, ‘mind and hand’, which calls for a hands-on 

approach to problem solving. The Eaglebotics Team is part of 

North Broward’s overall curriculum that helps students develop 

key transferable skills, such as creativity, critical thinking, 

curiosity and communication, which can be employed across all 

academic subjects, and in future careers. n

Thirty students (30) at Scheck Hillel Community School have 

earned 2017 AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional 

achievement on AP Exams. 

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® (AP) provides 

willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to 

take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and 

to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful 

performance on the AP Exams. 

The College Board recognizes several levels of 

achievement based on students’ performance on 

AP Exams. 

Thirteen (13) Scheck Hillel students qualified 

for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by 

earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP 

Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five 

or more of these exams. These students are Keith

the Alicia Espinosa Library 

ESPINOSA ACADEMY

On Friday, September 22, Conchita Espinosa Academy inaugurated 

the Alicia Espinosa Library. A new state-of-the-art 

facility, the library will be available to all K3-8th students at 

CEA. The library is dedicated to Alicia Espinosa (1917-2017), 

co-founder of Conchita Espinosa Academy. For over 80 years, 

Alicia Espinosa fostered her sister, Conchita’s, dreams of building 

a school and conservatory and made sure they worked. She 

handled the practical side of running the school, while her sister, 

Conchita, was the visionary. For many years, Alicia took care 

of the finances, the paperwork, and the numerous logistics that 

go into guiding a school. She was the first one to arrive each 

day, turning on the lights, greeting the children, and preparing 

everything for students and teachers to have a place where they 

could soar. She was never one to seek the limelight. She didn’t 

look for recognition or praise. She had no love of power, but she 

knew deeply the power of love and shared that with everyone 

she knew. She made a difference with her loyalty, her consistency, 

and her gifts of music and good sense. At the heart of all 

libraries are good stories. At the heart of all good stories are 

beautiful memories and important lessons. This library is dedicated 

to Alicia Espinosa, at the heart of CEA. n

allow them to work effectively with others and use cooperation 

and tolerance in social situations. Teachers play an important role 

in development through social interaction, emotional awareness, 

and self-regulation.

What Makes 

A Good School 

GREAT? 

What defines a great school? That was the question that 

was perplexing Bill Jackson, founder of GreatSchools.org. Realizing 

that test scores were holding more weight than they should 

as the single measure of greatness, he devised a more balanced 

rating system for schools. He changed the formulas to also factor 

in student or academic progress, college readiness, equity rating, 

and advanced courses. They also identified five pillars by 

which to measure a school’s climate and culture. This qualitative 

research found that climate and culture should center around 

robust teacher support, active family engagement, supportive 

environmental conditions, strong social and emotional student 

growth, and a school-wide climate of high expectations. These 

pillars are what catapult good schools into becoming great ones. 

Robust teacher support lays the framework for the health of 

a school. A healthy environment is a direct product of the interactions 

between students, teachers, administrators, and staff. 

Teacher support starts with listening, where each student knows 

that their story is heard and that their abilities and needs are 

understood as individuals. 

Effective parent involvement is a result of a genuine partnership 

that exists between schools and families. Active family 

engagement, especially around academics, is a shared responsibility 

and commitment to a student’s learning and development. 

A supportive learning environment is more than just 

resources and the physical classroom. It is also an environment 

where every student feels valued, included, and empowered. 

Students thrive where safety and belonging are acknowledged 

and practiced. A genuine supportive environment fosters a 

strong classroom community, promotes self-esteem and self-efficacy, 

and inspires students to take risks. 

While the importance of strong academics and high test scores 

is well-documented, early social and emotional learning 

skills are critical for long-term school and life success. Students 

establish social and emotional characteristics that are both 

critical in college and invaluable to employers. These skills will 

The benefits of holding students to high expectations have 

been well documented over time. Harvard Professor Robert 

Rosenthal is well known for his research on experimenter expectancy 

effects. Through his experiment, he discovered that when 

teachers expected students to increase their IQ, students did. This 

phenomenon whereby higher expectations lead to an increase in 

performance became known as The Pygmalion effect or Rosenthal 

effect. A school-wide climate of high expectations is also more 

than just a rigorous curriculum. It culminates with holding 

students accountable for their behaviors and expecting them to 

have self-control and responsibility. These high expectations 

should extend past students to teachers as well. Teachers should 

equally be held accountable for the learning and development of 

their students. 

While it is important that test scores and curriculum not be 

ignored, they should not be the be-all and end-all for what makes 

a good school great. A school’s climate and culture need to be 

carefully observed and evaluated and a good place to start is with 

the student body. n

Relocating to Florida in 2016, Mollie 

Small is thrilled to continue her 

journey as an educator at Fisher 

Island Day School by serving as the 

Assistant Head of School. She works 

closely with the staff, students, and 

parents to support student, family, and 

school-wide needs. Prior to becoming 

an integral part of the Fisher Island 

Day School administrative team, she 

worked as assistant principal at 

Canterbury Woods Elementary School 

in Annandale, Virginia, and vice 

principal at Hoboken Charter K-8 in 

New Jersey. 

A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, 

Mrs. Small earned her Bachelor’s 

degree in Kindergarten and Elementary 

Education at Penn State University. 

She then attained her Master’s degree 

in Curriculum, Instruction, and 

Educational Leadership with an 

endorsement in Administration from 

George Mason University in Virginia. 

Betty Johnson 

Recently Named the 

New Assistant Principal 

at Riviera Day School 

Mrs. Johnson was recently named as 

the new Assistant Principal at Riviera 

Day School. In 2007, Ms. Johnson, 

along with her two sons, joined the 

Riviera Schools family. At Riviera, 

she assumed the role of Technology 

Curriculum Coordinator and Academic 

Honors Teacher. 

Mrs. Johnson has been an educator 

for twenty-five years. She began her 

teaching career working for the public 

school system, where she was named 

Social Studies Beginning Teacher 

of the Year for the State of Florida. 

Ms. Johnson spent several summers 

writing curriculum for the County. 

Ms. Johnson has taught the Math and 

Social Studies methods courses as well 

as supervised hundreds of interns. 

In 2003, Ms. Johnson became Miami 

Dade College’s first Director of 

Clinical Supervision and Intern Placement 

for the School of Education.

Private school education has become more accessible and may be 

more affordable than most people think. A majority of schools are 

willing to accommodate families by providing flexibility and assistance 

for them to be able to afford a private education. Outside of assistance 

from each individual school, there are also outside resources that can 

significantly ease the financial burden of a private education. 

The Florida Department of Education is a good place to start. They 

currently provide four scholarship programs, allowing parents an 

unprecedented choice among schools. According to their website, the 

Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program has allowed for more than 

92,000 Florida students to attend a private school, an increase of more 

than 13,400 students from last year. In addition to these programs offered 

by The Florida Department of Education, below are some other 

resources that can help you plan and finance a private education.
