A
classical approach enhanced by Latin, a strong core
curriculum augmented by a fine arts program,
and a full elementary orchestra are a few of the
qualities that earned Weston Christian Academy a coveted
Blue Ribbon from the U.S. Department of Education this
past September. They are among 11 schools in Florida and 362
schools nationwide to be recognized as 2019 National Blue
Ribbon Schools. WCA was one of the only two faith-based
schools recognized in Florida.
A National Blue Ribbon School recipient has success in
one of two categories: an exemplary high performing school
or a school that has closed achievement gaps among student
subgroups. In the private sector, only about fifty schools are
selected nationally each year comprising less than 1% of all
private schools. The process is rigorous and private schools
first must be nominated by CAPE, the Council of American
Private Education. From there, the U.S. Department of
Education makes the selection.
Weston Christian Academy was recognized as an
exemplary high performing school. As a classically inspired
school, WCA education includes Bible, logic, rhetoric, science,
mathematics, history, and attention to classical literature.
They place a heavy emphasis on reading and mathematics.
Music begins in preschool and advances to instrumental
education in elementary and beyond. Playing in our school
band or orchestra is a requirement for all 4th and 5th graders.
Weston Christian Academy has something rare even on a
national scale: a full elementary orchestra.
On the heels of their national recognition as a Blue Ribbon
School, Weston Christian Academy held a special assembly
for students, parents, and staff where they celebrated the
achievement of this six-year goal. Principal, Bobby McCann,
credits the school's academic success to an exceptional
faculty, a committed staff, cooperative students with a desire
to learn, involved parents that contribute time and effort, and
a supportive leadership team. The tipping point of WCA's
success is this groups shared worldview and singleness of
purpose: to live out the greatest commandment of loving God
fully and loving one’s neighbor.
While this marks the first National Blue Ribbon Award for
Weston Christian Academy, it certainly is only the beginning
of many proud moments to come. School representatives will
attend a gala on Nov. 14 and 15 in Washington, D.C. where U.S.
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will recognize awardees.
