PERFORMING ARTS
that’s how tension is created.”
In the third Ballet Hispánico piece,
inspired by the circular number Pi, 3
“Catorce Dieciséis” is a joyful feast
for the senses, reflecting on the
circular movement of life with theatrically
breathtaking imagery set to
music by Antonio Vivaldi and other
Baroque composers.
“I’ve known about Tania and her work [since]
the end of my dance career, and … her work
stuck in my mind for many years,” said Eduardo
Vilaro, artistic director and CEO of Ballet Hispánico.
“She uses very quick and sharp moves.
She enjoys the line. It’s not the music; it’s these
bodies that are developing the environment, and
I think that’s fascinating to me. With our dancers
who are so eloquent in their bodies, it’s a perfect
match.”
From its grassroots origins as a dance school
and community-based performing arts troupe,
Ballet Hispánico has grown into a world-class
institution. Under Vilaro’s artistic direction, the
company performs a diverse repertory by the
foremost choreographers of our time, as well as
emerging artists. The choreographers represent
a multitude of nationalities including Venezuela,
Cuba, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, Brazil,
Argentina, and Colombia. The
company has offered more than
3,350 performances to audiences
of over two million throughout 11
countries.
As part of Ballet Hispánico’s
Con Brazos Abiertos
residency in Asheville, the company
will bring three days of unique
discussions, workshops and events, including a
Latin Social Dance class and party, a community
class for families, master classes for experienced
dancers and special performances and workshops
for local students. And company dancers
and leaders will lead a discussion ahead of each
public performance.
A special daytime show will also be available
for students at 10am, Wednesday, April 10. This
performance is open to homeschoolers, school
groups, community groups, and families and is
recommended for grades 2-12.
