Founders Nelcya Chamszadeh and Fabrizio Cantoni have
cc-tapis produces hand-made rugs in Nepal, combining traditional techniques with a contemporary
aesthetic. To best display the distinct designs by various cc-tapis artists, vignettes were created in and
with carefully chosen items of furniture. We’ve showcased many of these rugs and designers on Yellowtrace
Patricia Urquiola‘s chromatic, curving Slinkie and Triple Slinkie rugs were the perfect contemporary
contrast to Villa Panza’s pink marble floors. One even made an appearance hanging from a courtyard
balcony, overlooking Meg Webster‘s Cone of Water fountain. Milan-based set designer Greta Cevenini
nailed the styling of each space, pairing rugs with rooms that enhanced one another while maintaining
a playful edge. The addition of clear perspex heels and a white fur jacket slung over a chair bring
Cristina Celestino‘s shaggy pink Envolée rug to life; suddenly transforming the room into that of an
INSIDE VILLA PANZA IN VARESE.
Nastaligio by the ultra-contemporary Studio Klass was styled to lean into the opulence of Villa Panza,
its soft green and blush pink colour scheme enhancing the room’s ornamental cornices. Touches of
gold in furniture chosen by campaign stylist Greta Cevenini (plus another pair of kicked-off heels) tie
the set together. Standouts for us include Bethan Laura Wood‘s Super Fake collection, inspired by the
collision of the man-made with nature, expressed through her signature passion for colour and detail.
Each hand-knotted rug is based on a different rock form, with surface patterns created through the
organic build-up of sediment over time. Wood selected different rug-making techniques to represent
each facet of her ‘rocks’, drawing a parallel between their compositional change over time, and the
skills honed over centuries by Tibetan artisans. Combinations of cotton weave, Himalayan wool, linen,
and pure silk were used to create each rug.
The friendship between CC-Tapis and David/Nicolas stretches back to their university days, so it’s no
surprise that the seeds for the Plasterworks Collection were planted over a long, friendly lunch. The
restaurant in question was Kaléo, a Beirut spot designed by the duo. Inspired by the triangle patterns
that decorate the restaurant’s walls, the motif was spun out into multiple variations that feature soft lines,
inventive color combinations and contrasting textures. Each hand sketched design was then translated
into an ultra-fine hand-knotted rug in Himalayan wool and silk.
furniture and accessories in similar tones
IN AN AGE where time is the ultimate luxury, it turns out the
best things in life can’t be hurried. It can take months to get
a table at Michelin-star restaurants; a year for a new season
of your favourite TV show to air. And if you want a CC-Tapis
rug, there’s a tantalising three-month wait for them, too.
Each design is produced at the CC-Tapis company atelier
in Nepal by Tibetan artisans using the ancient craft of handknotting.
Himalayan wool from Tibet, silk sourced “directly
from the silk worm” and aloe plant fibres are spun, washed
and dyed without any machinery. Once the rug has been
knotted, it may be sheared, embossed or cut to create the
final design. Every rug is washed using recycled rainwater
and laid in the sun to dry. Sustainable techniques are used
throughout the process, and it all happens at the atelier,
which means any bespoke creation is possible. You can
even match the dye to Pantone and RAL colours.
At the helm of this inspiring brand is Nelcya Chamszadeh
and her husband Fabrizio Cantoni, who met at hotel school.
After leaving the hospitality industry, they moved to France
to work at Nelcya’s family-run rug store. They soon opened
their own, but it wasn’t until Fabrizio studied interior design
in Milan that they turned CC-Tapis into what it is today. The
team, led by art director Daniele Lora, dream up fantastical,
colourful designs that weave innovation with tradition. A rug
by CC-Tapis is art you walk on, a masterpiece for your floor
– and proof that good things come to those who wait. R
