WEEK OF MARCH 4, 2019
A weekly Saturday recap to share with you our favorite links, discoveries, exhibitions,
and more from the past seven days. This week: a truly epic new daybed,
a visual exploration of the rise of “chubby furniture,” and a new material
made entirely from the byproduct of sunflower crops.
Discoveries
This rug isn’t new, but as someone who recently moved and is in the market for a whole apartment’s
worth of new furniture and accessories, this Hello Sonia rug by Studiopepe for CC-Tapis is majorly on
my radar, as is the newer “reloaded” version linked here.
V 13 GREAT THINGS WE SAW AT MILAN’S DESIGN FAIR
The highlights of the recent Salone del Mobile included rainbow-colored Aalto stools, harlequin
carpets and a field of wildflowers.
[...] The French-Italian rug brand CC-Tapis has made a habit of inviting up-and-coming designers to
translate their aesthetics into striking floor coverings each year, and this collection was no exception.
The standouts were soft, irregularly shaped gradient rugs by the Amsterdam-based designer Germans
Ermics and a trippy harlequin grid series by Martino Gamper.
THE BEST THING WE SAW IN MILAN TODAY, DAY 2
Sight Unseen is on the ground at the Milan Furniture Fair this week and we’ll be bringing you loads of
coverage next week, plus moment-by-moment round-ups on our Instagram Stories. But until our rounds
here are done, we’ll be featuring quick hits from some of our favorite things that caught our eye.
Our pick today? These skewed, psychedelic checkerboard Martino Gamper rugs for cc-tapis, whose
color-blocked not-quite-grids result in a collision of textures and hues. The whole cc-tapis collection in
general this year is stellar, including new works by Germans Ermics, Mae Englegeer, Patricia Urquiola
and more. On view at the cc-tapis showroom, Piazza Santo Stefano 10.
THE BEST OF MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2019, PART I
This year, it felt like we did things a bit differently in Milan. We went to a dance club until the wee
hours of the morning rather than spend yet another night at the de facto late-night hangout Bar Basso.
We went to Lake Como to decompress with friends rather than heading straight home to prepare for
New York Design Week. And we sent our Instagram into overdrive, sharing almost 100 on-the-spot
photos and first impressions (which are saved in our highlights in case you missed them!) But of
course those Instagrams were a mere sliver of what we actually saw, and what we saw was woefully
under-representative of what was actually on view.
At times, it feels like Milan is getting too big for its own good; this year, Dimore Gallery alone hosted
five different presentations, and the Brera building where our Airbnb is located hosted at least three
separate immersive interiors. At the same time, each year brings something truly wonderful to behold,
whether it’s furniture hoisted into inflatable bubbles (Nilufar Depot), a newly open-to-the-public Piero
Portaluppi interior (Massimo de Carlo Gallery), or the coolest amoeba-shaped marble tables we’ve ever
seen (by Studio Binocle, which we’re featuring here today). We’ll be devoting our whole week to coverage
from the fair so stay tuned, and scroll down for the first of our favorites.
MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2019: ITEMS AVAILABLE NOW
CC-Tapis Rugs
Designed in Milan and produced in Nepal, CC-Tapis rugs represent the vision of their French founder, as
well as many partner designers. This was all evident at their Studio MILO-designed Piazza Santo Stefano
showroom, as well as at Salone del Mobile. This year, highlights included Martino Gamper’s collaborative
series as well as Amsterdam-based designer Germans Ermics.
DESIGNERS TAKEOVER THE VOGUE ITALIA OFFICE FOR
MILAN DESIGN WEEK
For the second iteration of Life in Vogue, eight notable designers turn their hands to the
[...] David/Nicolas
famously fashionable office
Like so many designers today, Beirut-based duo David/Nicolas were thinking about how to instill an
office with the feeling of a home. For their workspace, they placed a monolithic desk front center but
surrounded it with homey furnishings such as their Chaise Maurice, designed for Nilufar gallery, a new
rug for cc-Tapis, and dark wood paneling from their Supernova collection for Carpenters Workshop. They
explain: “We imagined a person—elegant, sleek, classic, with a touch of madness.” [...]
