STUDIO KLASS’ CINQUECENTO RUG COLLECTION
TAKES CUES FROM RENAISSANCE ART
Industrial designers Marco Maturo and Alessio Roscini from Studio Klass have created a collection of
geometric rugs informed by Italian Renaissance paintings.
Called Cinquecento, meaning 500 in Italian, the collection was designed by the Milan-based duo for
contemporary rug manufacturer Cc-Tapis.
Handmade using Himalayan wool and silk, the rugs aim to celebrate the introduction of perspective in
art during the Italian Renaissance period through their geometric patterns and jewel-toned colours.
Each of the four rugs in the collection has been inspired by a particular painting from the Renaissance
era, including well-known 15th century artists such as Sandro Botticelli and Giovanni Bellini.
STUDIO KLASS’ CINQUECENTO RUG COLLECTION
TAKES CUES FROM RENAISSANCE ART
The Cinquecento rug collection was inspired by a series of
Renaissance paintings from well-known 15th century artists
The Mazzolino rug took inspiration from Ludovico Mazzolino’s
painting, Presentazione di Gesù al tempio, which features warm,
jewel-like hues
The designers reduced the paintings to their essential components of shape and colour, while retaining
the illusion of perspective in each piece, and used this to create original designs comprised of
colour-blocked, geometric forms.
“We literally started to disassemble different areas of the paintings, dividing the masterpieces into portions
and highlighting the elements that made the perspective very clear and alive,” explained the duo.
The Veneziano rug, for instance, was based on a work by early 15th century painter Domenico Veneziano,
the Santa Lucia de’ Magnoli altarpiece, which features olive, dusty pink and light blue hues.
An artwork by Sandro Botticelli, painter of the famous Birth of Venus, also informed one of the designs
– specifically his Storie di Lucrezia painting, depicting a battle scene in shades of terracotta and brick
red, framed by angular architecture.
STUDIO KLASS’ CINQUECENTO RUG COLLECTION
TAKES CUES FROM RENAISSANCE ART
Giovanni Bellini’s artwork, Pala di San Zaccaria, influenced the
design of this Roverella rug, which forefronts soft blues and reds
Maturo and Roscini emulated the Renaissance use of
perspective using blocks of colour and geometric forms
The other two rugs take their design cues from Ludovico Mazzolino’s painting, Presentazione di Gesù
al tempio, and Giovanni Bellini’s artwork, Pala di San Zaccaria – both illustrating religious scenes in a
variety of jewel-like tones.
The use of linear perspective in each of the paintings involved applying principles of mathematics and
geometry to painting, to realistically portray space and depth in artworks.
“Renaissance artists always tried to create a new type of space with their rules and techniques of
perspective, which was a new field between openness and intimate withdrawal, something completely
new compared to their predecessors,” said Maturo and Roscini.
The Veneziano rug was based on a work by Domenico Veneziano,
the Santa Lucia de’ Magnoli altarpiece
The Nastagio rug takes its design cues from an artwork by
Sandro Botticelli, titled Storie di Lucrezia
“We asked ourselves, why, after 500 years, these paintings made up of shapes, forms and colours
still have an amazing power over us? How can they still work considering the nature of contemporary
aesthetics?” they continued.
“It was clear enough that the use of perspective was at the centre of the Renaissance artists’ research,”
they continued. “We wanted to bring these elements into contemporary design.”
Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola also adopted an illusory effect with her Rotazioni and Visioni rug
collection, which uses block colours and black outlines to create geometric patterns, in a bid to create
a false sense of depth by tricking the eye.
PREVIEW: MILAN FURNITURE FAIR
Designers and brands are playing a cautious game this year, reissuing classics or simply
adding new elements to existing lines – and sustainability and recycling are key
At this year’s Milan furniture fair, which opens on Tuesday, designers and brands are playing a cautious
game. While some British companies (among them Established & Sons, Lee Broom and SCP) are
choosing not to exhibit this year, perhaps due to political and economic uncertainty, other design houses
are plundering archives to reissue classic furniture, or simply adding new colours or materials to existing
lines. Sustainability and recycling are key. But as well as looking after the planet, we’re looking after
ourselves: colours and silhouettes are warmer, softer and rounder this year. Are we in need of a bit of
comfort these days? Probably. [...]
The Collaboration
The Milan-based rug company CC-Tapis is known for collaborations with designers such as Patricia
Urquiola, Bethan Laura Wood and Faye Toogood which result in experimental and technically challenging
floor coverings. Every rug is hand-knotted in their Nepalese workshops by Tibetan artisans. This
year they’re working with a new selection of makers on Spectrum – Killer Knots from Outer Space. It’s
all futurist eclecticism from the likes of David/Nicolas, Maarten De Ceulaer and Studiopepe. There’s also
a standout new series by designer Martino Gamper, Xequer, based on chessboard shapes, hot colours
and twisted lines. [...]
CHESS BOARDS INSPIRE PSYCHEDELIC RUG FROM CC‐TAPIS
Italian designer Martino Gamper has created a collection of colourful rugs based on warped
TREND : UNUSUAL SHAPED RUGS
Rugs have an extremely long and interesting history, as I discovered when I decided to share this post.
They date back as far as ancient Egypt where they were made by hand on a loom. There are even references
to rugs in the bible.
Nowadays, you can find rugs in most modern homes and they have become particularly popular in the
last decade or so as homeowners have increasingly opted to rip up their carpets in favour of hard flooring
such as wood, laminate, vinyl and tiles.
Buying a rug used to be a fairly simple task, with the main deciding factors being whether you wanted
something plain or patterned, deep pile or something relatively flat. The choice today is nowhere near as
straightforward.
In recent years, rugs have become more like a statement piece of artwork and are often displayed in
settings that are more akin to a gallery than a simple shop. They often depict a complex narrative that
can only be deciphered by taking a glimpse into the thought process of the designer.
CC Tapis Showroom, Milan Design Week
Photography ©AndreaBortolucci
These statement pieces have been getting more and more ambitious over the past few years as we have
seen designers experimenting with increasingly innovative techniques. It was around the time of Milan
Design Week that I spotted a distinct trend for unusual shaped rugs. It would appear that rugs don’t just
come in standard rectangle or circular shapes anymore. The standout rugs that have caught my attention
are a lot more abstract in shape. And whilst they are still designed to be used on the floor, many of
them would look equally at home hung up on the wall just like a piece of artwork.
is one of the rugs in the Spectrum campaign.
The set design for the Spectrum campaign was created by Studio MILO, using elements from the
brand’s Salone del Mobile presentation in Milan earlier this year.
“Studio MILO designed a modular stand with a durable iron structure and polycarbonate sheeting,
working with durable materials,” explained the brand’s art director Daniele Lora.
“We reused these for our photo-shoot and will reuse them for future trade-fair stands, giving a second
and third life to the materials, before they are permanently recycled.”
The studio contrasted the colours within each rug with dramatic colour-block lighting for the campaign
images. These were taken against a white backdrop, with coloured gels used to create the appearance
of distinct architectural elements.
“We used light to create the architectural environment,” explained Lora. “All the colours were chosen
to re-create the visible colour spectrum.”
The campaign images were shot by photographers Alessandro Oliva and Jeremias Morandell, with
creative direction by Motel 409.
The name of the campaign speaks to the spectrum of artists, ideas, materials, colours and production
techniques that come together for the project.
“For the Spectrum collection, we chose artists with completely different visions,” explained Lora.
“We didn’t intend for there to be any aesthetic coherence.”
“Every design has its own unique style which required different materials, different yarn thicknesses
and different densities. It forces us to push production, to introduce new ideas and processes to an
ancient production-technique,” continued Lora.
The particular Tibetan method is unique in the rug-making world thanks to its slit-loop technique
which involves yarn from Himalayan sheep wool being knotted into a row of loops and finally slit to
create a pile.
Every knot in a Cc-Tapis rug is made by hand in Nepal.
For the rugs that appear in the Spectrum campaign, the wool is supplemented with silk, linen and
cotton weave alongside aloe and metallic fibres to create a range of different textures.
Tidal by Germans Ermics is set against a vibrant blue backdrop
Germans Ermics’ Tidal series includes five rugs dyed in ombre hues of peach, light green and mustard
yellow to create a feeling of fluidity and movement.
“To imitate the gradient effect which is inherent in all of his work, we had to develop and create completely
new yarns,” explained Lora.
“For every level of gradient in the design, we hand-spun yarns which combined six individual threads
in two different colours.”
Brussels-based designer Maarten De Ceulaer created his designs by scanning and then digitally combining
images of different birds into abstract, asymmetrical shapes.
The resulting two rugs in the Feathers series feature wool, cotton and silk piles of different heights to
create a sense of depth.
“To achieve the extreme detail of the design we had to use an extraordinarily high density of individual
knots: 232,000 per square metres,” said Lora.
