ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS2020-2021 ∎ PLANNING GUIDEENGLISH II WITH LAB (1201/1212) ★EOC EXAM Grade 10 Credit 1.0 English/1.0 ElectivePrerequisite: Approval of English TeacherEnglish II with Lab curriculum builds on the expository writing skills developed in English I. Students use these writing skills tocompose at least one narrative, one explanatory, and one persuasive full process paper. English II with Lab also continues thedevelopment of skills in the fundamentals of grammar and usage with extensive review of skills previously introduced.Literature read and analyzed includes variety in both genre and author. The state required End of Course (EOC) exam isadministered upon successful completion of this course.ENGLISH III (1301)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS2020-2021 ∎ PLANNING GUIDEENGLISH 102 (1415) Grade 12 Semester: Credit 0.5Prerequisite: Grade of C or higher in English 101 Dual enrollmentEnglish 102 is a dual credit English course focusing on argumentative and persuasive writing. Students will have theopportunity to earn three college credits through Lincoln University. NCAA approved course.AP ENGLISH LITERATURE (1405) Grade 12 Full Year: Credit 1.0Prerequisite: This course has an outside assignment due on the first day of the class. This assignment will be availablefrom the current AP English Literature teacher in MayAP English Literature is a college level class for students who want to read challenging literature with an in-depth analyticalapproach. It includes the reading of and written analysis of British poetry, novels, and drama. The student enrolling in this classshould be a superior reader of difficult literature, have a firm background in literary analysis, and have a high proficiency levelin the areas of mechanics, grammar, organization, and logic. Written analysis will be based on literature studied in class as wellas literature read independently of class study. This course prepares the student to take the AP English Literature exam in Mayfor which they may earn college credit. NCAA approved course.JOURNALISTIC WRITING (1303) Grades 9-12 Full Year: Credit 1.0Journalistic Writing is designed for students with an interest in journalism and those who intend to take Newspaper Productionor Yearbook Production. This course provides instruction in news, feature, sports, in-depth, and opinion writing; ethics andmedia law; interviewing; researching and page design. There will also be opportunities for learning photography andadvertising. This course is a prerequisite for Newspaper Production and one of the prerequisite options for YearbookProduction. Seniors must have the instructor’s approval to take this course. Journalistic Writing may serve as a fourth Englishcredit. NCAA approved course.SPEECH I (5550) Grades 9-12 Semester: Credit 0.5Speech I is concerned with the fundamentals of communication. It is a public-speaking course designed around the idea that welearn to speak by speaking. It contains a balance of both theory and practice. Speeches are given to peers that have beenresearched and rehearsed. Students will regularly stand in front of peers and deliver speeches. This is a performance-based classwhere grades are determined from performances. Speech I may serve as half of a fourth English credit. NCAA approvedcourse.SPEECH II (5551) Grades 9-12 Semester: Credit 0.5Prerequisite: Speech ISpeech II explores communication on an intrapersonal level as well as an interpersonal level. An emphasis will be placed on thespeaker in small group situations. This course will give a practical application of how to communicate within the real-life worldof meetings and relationships. Students will regularly stand in front of peers and deliver speeches. This is a performance-basedclass where grades are determined from performances. Speech I may serve as half of a fourth English credit. NCAA approvedcourse.DEBATE I (5552) Grades 9-12 Semester: Credit 0.5Prerequisite: Speech IDebate I is a course designed to develop student’s beginning awareness, understanding, and application of language arts as itapplies to oral communication. Emphasis is focused on teaching students the proper procedures of debate and the artful craftingof argumentation. Students will be expected to design and construct well-informed arguments around topics of currentsignificance. Debate I may serve as half of a fourth English credit. NCAA approved course.DEBATE II (5553) Grades 9-12 Semester: Credit 0.5Prerequisite: Debate IDebate II is designed to further develop and enhance a student’s knowledge of debate skills taught in Debate I. The course willfocus on advanced research, analysis, and communication skills through the format of Policy Debate, Public Debate andLincoln Douglas Debate. Debate II is designed for students wishing to debate at the competitive level, meaning that studentswill travel to tournaments throughout the year to demonstrate mastery of their debate skills.
