DanielRichards, head coach of the team, helpedorchestrate the meets and practices,playing a key role in getting this team offthe ground.Richards had conversations withDuncan Stevenson, director of DistrictAthletics, which focused on strengtheningthe college’s athletic program. Thisis what led to Pierce adding women’scross country to the program, which hasbeen a goal of Stevenson for the past twodecades.“Year one we just wanted to form ateam,” said Richards. “Next year, I wantto be able to compete in the NY conference;it's a prestigious conference whenit comes to distance running and crosscountry and I want Pierce to be in theconversation as early as next year.”As far as how Pierce should be seenin the realm of cross country, Richards20 / piercepioneernews.commentions that he hopes to make this aplace to go and run for. “That’s my goal- competing for and winning conferencechampionships in the next few years,” hesaid.Currently the team is excelling asthe season progresses, and students areexcited that they have this new opportunityavailable to them. Serin Caldwell, astudent on the team, expressed her thrillfor being able to be a part of this. “I’vealways loved to run and now that PierceCollege has a cross country team I thinkit’s a great opportunity for lots of girls togo in and do their passion.”Other athletes on the team, such as TiffanyCompton, have also expressed theirexcitement about their experience. “Ienjoy my time very well,” said Compton.“I’ve done this since high school and tooka two-year break, so it’s really nice gettingback into the individual school schedule.”When it comes to Richards experiencecoaching he says his favorite part is thecomradery. “Meeting these girls with apassion for running, it’s a diverse groupof girls and it's cool seeing how runningcan bring them together. Sometimes youhave a handful of people and you’re like‘how is this going to form a team?’. It'scool to see them bond over hard workand practices day in to day out, that's thebiggest reward.”Over the season, the team has done atotal of six games, including their mostrecent one on Nov. 18 at Saint Martin’sUniversity. Each member has beenimproving and enjoying their time sincethe creation of this team, and are lookingforward to continuing to do so.For those that have an interest inlearning more about the women’s crosscountry team, students can check out thesports athletic page on the Pierce Collegewebsite.
