Derry City and Strabane District Council
are leading a weeklong festival to
celebrate International celebration of
Persons with Disability Day on Tuesday
3rd December 2019.
We are continuously committing to
ensuring Access and Inclusion is at
the forefront in all that we do and is
embedded in all that we achieve to
promote equal opportunity for all.
This is our fourth annual celebration
and each year it becomes evident that
Access and Inclusion is ever increasing
on agendas and it also becomes more
evident that with increased partnership
working and collaborative approaches,
we can collectively promote and increase
equal opportunity for all.
This year we will host the largest
celebration in Northern Ireland to promote
people with disabilities having no less
than six strategic partners. This is the
second programme compiled to promote
disability arts, and ensure that cultural
venues are continuously improving
their access and inclusion provisions
within DCSDC.
We want to take this opportunity to
congratulate all venues, businesses and
initiatives that are highlighted within
this program, for their commitment;
continuous improvement and
contributions to ensure that our pan
disability community, their families and
carers have the opportunities to make
informed choices for their wellbeing and
day to day life experience. This year saw
the highest ever recorded use of access
and inclusion provisions for the very
famous Halloween Celebrations with
over 1200 queries received.
Whilst we recognize that work to date
implemented is positive we are also
aware that there is more to do...
but we can do it all together.
Throughout the week there will be
showcases of innovative practices,
such as AWOL project; Strabane Town
becoming JAM Card (Just A Minute)
friendly- the first town in UK and
Ireland, and programming to get you
into the Christmas spirit with relaxed
performances, ISL/BSL interpreters;
a deaf choir and even Santa visits for
our nearest and dearest

Robin Price is an artist-inventor, trans-disciplinary
physicist, musician and cat enthusiast. His practice,
surveyed in Escape Sequence, spans digital art,
electronics, sculpture, club music and visuals, with a
methodology which brackets everyday objects and
re-imagines them as open source sites of play and
digital exploration.

include Shopmobility and brand new Adult
Changing Rooms which includes a heightadjustable
adult-sized changing bench, a
ceiling track hoist, and plenty of space for
carers. The Foyleside Customer Service
Assistants are on site to direct customers
to this facility.
Additionally, in 2018, Foyleside opened their
new Sensory Room. The Sensory Room is a
unique space for children and young adults
with autism and other sensory needs.
The Sensory Room is part of a wider
initiative to improve accessibility for all in the
centre. In addition, for the Christmas period
we have introduced in recent years Silent
Santa visits from 6pm - 8pm which will take
place each Wednesday!
Wednesday evening represents the
designated Quiet Shopping Evenings.
In the centre background music will be
turned off and tannoy announcements
will be kept to a minimum.
A Wednesday night once a week
was chosen specifically for autism
riendly shopping.
Compared to regular opening hours, the
child can experience the magic of visiting
Santa in his grotto in a relaxed, quiet
environment without anxiety often
caused by crowding, queuing or noise.
