This four-movement work for flute, discovered among
Vaughan Williams’s manuscripts after his death, seems to
have been composed in 1913 for the French flautist Louis
Fleury. It shows the composer beginning to experiment
with the bitonality that would flavour his later works. The
flute part is by turn expressive and virtuosic, making it an
excellent showcase for more advanced flautists, especially
those looking for British repertoire.

This eight movement work is divided into three groups of
movements (see below). It was composed in 1934 for the
great viola player Lionel Tetris, for whom the composer
had written Flos Campi almost a decade earlier. Pastoral
lyricism is punctuated by passages of spirited virtuosity,
skilfully exhibiting the abilities of both the instrument and
the player.

The Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra was composed
1953-4 to mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of
the LSO and was written for the orchestra’s principal tuba
player, Philip Catelinet. It was the first major concerto to be
written for the instrument.

England’s Pleasant Land
SATB and military band
Music for a pageant, England’s Pleasant Land was first
performed in Milton Court, Surrey, in 1938 and contains
music by various composers. Vaughan Williams wrote
music for Act II, scene i: ‘Exit of the Ghosts of the Past’ and
‘The Funeral March for the old order’.

This brief piece for wind band, composed in 1939 to open
a pageant at the Royal Albert Hall, is simple but highly
effective. It opens with a rousing brass fanfare, which
gives way to a stirring, chorale-like passage in which the
woodwind come to the fore, before giving way to the
returning brass fanfare.
