Ralph Vaughan Williams
Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in Down Ampney,
Gloucestershire on 12 October 1872. He was related to
the Darwin and Wedgwood families and grew up in an
atmosphere of Liberalism, in which he was encouraged to
pursue his musical interests. He read History at Cambridge
University and went to the Royal College of Music where
his teachers were Parry, Wood, and Stanford. He then went
on to study with Bruch in Berlin, and Ravel in Paris.
Vaughan Williams’s wide-ranging musical activities
greatly enhanced English musical life but they have also
contributed to the mistaken view that his compositional
output was in some way parochial. He believed in the
value of music education and wrote practical competition
pieces and serviceable church music. Additionally, with
49th Parallel (1940–1) he found a new outlet in writing
for film. His profoundly disturbing Symphony No.6 (1948)
received international acclaim with more than a hundred
performances in a little over two years.
Although one of his first works to achieve success, Norfolk
Rhapsody No. 1 (1906), makes use of folksong, he rarely
incorporated such material directly into his orchestral and
instrumental compositions. However, his enthusiasm for
folksong (he collected over 800 examples) undoubtedly
influenced his compositional language, as did his interest
in Elizabethan and Jacobean music.
His sensitivity to the twentieth-century human condition,
his flexibility in writing for all levels of music-making, and
his great imagination combine to make him one of the
key figures in twentieth-century music. Vaughan Williams
died on 26 August 1958 and his ashes were interred at
Westminster Abbey.
Described by Walton as the ‘greatest symphony since
Beethoven’, Vaughan Williams’s fourth symphony was
composed in 1935 and is noted for its abrasively dissonant
harmonic language, unlike much of the composer’s other
work.
Despite having been composed in the years 1938–43,
when Europe was ravaged by war, this work radiates peace
and serenity. It marks the peak of the lyrical modalism of
works such as the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
(1910), Flos Campi (1925), and Job (1931). Although it is not
a programme symphony, it draws heavily on John Bunyan’s
The Pilgrim’s Progress for inspiration, featuring several
themes that were sketched for, and eventually used in,
Vaughan Williams’s 1951 opera. In addition, Bunyan’s words
‘He hath given me rest by his sorrow and life by his death’
were originally inscribed over the third movement.
Vaughan Williams’s sixth symphony was composed
immediately after the Second World War and its dramatic,
at times violent, musical language was long felt to be a
comment on that conflict (though the composer denied
it had any programmatic intent). Its power and invention
were immediately recognized and it has remained part of
the concert repertoire ever since.
Symphony No. 7, the Sinfonia Antartica, was drawn from
the music Vaughan Williams provided for the film Scott
of the Antarctic in 1947 and was completed in 1952. The
composer skilfully evokes the sparse beauty and grandeur
of the landscape with a large orchestra and percussion
section, including—famously—a wind machine, to create a
work of great power and intensity.
Written between 1953 and 1955, Symphony No. 8 is the
composer’s shortest symphony and considered by many
to be his least serious. Aside from a few sombre moments,
the symphony is optimistic in mood. It displays Vaughan
Williams’s love for colourful combinations of instruments
with a percussion section that, he said, employs ‘all the
‘phones and ‘spiels known to the composer’.
opera The Poisoned Kiss. Using material from the most
memorable songs and sections, including ‘Blue larkspur
in a garden’, ‘Love breaks all rules’, and the ‘Kiss’ climax and
its aftermath, Adrian Williams has created an orchestral
synthesis befitting the composer’s own musical vision.
Always a strong proponent of widening musical
participation, Vaughan Williams composed this work for a
Rural Music Schools Association concert in the Royal Albert
Hall in 1950. It was premiered by a massed orchestra of
400 school pupils; the composer declined a place in the
Royal Box for the performance, preferring to sit among
the second violins. Although its purpose was in part
educational, this is nonetheless a distinguished work in
its own right and thus makes a wonderful introduction to
orchestral music -making for developing string players.
The work is notable for the fact that players are divided
into three groups: ‘Concertino’ (a group of skilled players);
‘Tutti’ (involving third position and simple double stops);
and ‘Ad lib.’ (for players who prefer to use only open
strings).
Originally the title for Vaughan Williams’s opera Sir John
in Love, Fat Knight was conceived as a seven-movement
orchestral suite that drew upon the opera and had, as
its central character, Shakespeare’s Falstaff. Vaughan
Williams never completed the work and left only a twopiano
score. It is from this score that the conductor Martin
Yates has realised the Fat Knight suite, incorporating the
orchestration from the completed opera.
Vaughan Williams first encountered the old English
folk song ‘Dives and Lazarus’ when he was 21, and here
presents five variants that are, in his own words, ‘not exact
replicas of traditional tunes but rather reminiscences of
various versions in my own collection and those of others’.
The work was premiered in Carnegie Hall as part of the
1939 New York World’s Fair, and is a wonderful example
of the composer’s use of sumptuous string textures and
modal tonalities.
This work was composed in 1906, based on folk songs that
Vaughan Williams had collected at a fishing port in the
English county of Norfolk the previous year. Having been
premiered in the year of its composition at the Proms in
London, the work was substantially revised in 1914 into its
current form. From a captivatingly soft opening, the music
slowly builds to an expansive and emotive climax, before
the tone changes entirely to one of animation and vigour
in the faster central section. This soon gives way, however,
to a return of the softer material of the opening, with the
piece ending as quietly and mesmerizingly as it began.
The Poisoned Kiss is a stage work subtitled ‘A Romantic
Extravaganza’ that falls somewhere between serious
opera and comic operetta. Its overture may be described
in the same way, with expressive melodies set alongside
witty parodies. The orchestration is vivid and colourful,
punctuating the overture’s comic moments and lending
a luscious quality to the more Romantic passages. This
combination of tunefulness, wit, and colour makes the
overture a delightful addition to an orchestral concert
49th Parallel (entitled The Invaders in the USA) was a
1941 British war film (featuring Laurence Olivier) about a
The ‘Running Set’ was a folk dance of British origin that at
the time of this work’s composition could still be found
in areas of the United States. Vaughan Williams wrote this
piece for a massed performance of the dance at the Royal
Albert Hall as part of the 1934 National Folk Dance Festival.
Founded on traditional dance tunes, it draws heavily on
Gaelic fiddle music, brilliantly capturing its merry, spirited
nature. The four tunes featured are ‘Barrack Hill’, ‘The
Blackthorn Stick’, ‘Irish Reel’, and ‘Cock o’ the North’.
Falcon Scott’s ill-fated second expedition to the Antarctic in
1910–3. The film is well known for its score, which was later
reworked to create Sinfonia Antartica. Vaughan Williams’s
original score for the film was heavily edited in the studio
and halved in length in order to create the final edit. It is
now presented in its full, unedited form, allowing listeners
Flemish Farm was a 1943 film about the recovery of a
Belgian RAF squadron’s flag from a farm in occupied
Belgium, for which Vaughan Williams wrote the score.
This score was adapted into a suite that was premiered at
the Proms by the London Symphony Orchestra under the
composer’s own baton in 1945. Despite moments of both
grandeur and tranquillity, the general tone of the seven
movements is darkly atmospheric, with the musical style
drawing heavily on Vaughan Williams’s symphonic writing.
In fact, the composer stated that two of the themes for his
Sixth Symphony (composed 1944–7) stemmed from ideas
originally intended for the score to Flemish Farm.
characteristic long-held drone played by the oboe with the
melody in the strings. The third movement is a scherzo and
Concerto for Violin was composed 1924–5 at a time when
neo-classicism was being explored by many of the leading
composers of the day. It seamlessly combines references to
the baroque style with Vaughan Williams’s own distinctive
vein of pastoral violin writing, so beautifully demonstrated
in the earlier The Lark Ascending. The work comprises three
movements, each featuring contrasts in mood. The first
movement juxtaposes heavy orchestral passages with
elegant ones that bring the soloist to the fore. The central
slow movement blends tranquil pastoralism with more
sombre moments, while the Presto sets nimble melodies
alongside jagged ones in a virtuosic close to the work.
The first two movements (‘Toccata’ and ‘Romanza’) of this
powerful and dramatically expressive work were composed
in 1926, with the third (‘Fuga chromatica, con finale alla
Job and Symphony No. 4. It was initially scored for only one
solo pianist; the composer’s close friend Harriet Cohen was
the soloist at the premiere. Over a decade after the work’s
first performance, the composer collaborated with Joseph
Cooper to create a version for two pianos and orchestra,
with the aim of making the difficult solo piano part more
accessible. This two-piano version was premiered in 1946
shortly after returning to the Royal College of Music
to study composition with Stanford, and completed it
to the British Library, and it was here that the pianist
Mark Bebbington rediscovered it in 2010, subsequently
recording it for Somm Records. The work shows influences
of late nineteenth-century composers, but also hallmarks
of the composer’s later style and maturity. As such, it offers
A suite for solo viola, wordless choir (SATB), and small
orchestra, Flos Campi is one of Vaughan Williams’s most
enigmatic pieces. Although the six movements all borrow
their titles from the Old Testament’s Song of Solomon, the
choir never articulates a single word. Instead, it serves as a
section of the orchestra, creating an elegant vocal texture
and backdrop to the viola’s haunting solo lines. The work
These songs were composed in the years 1954–8, the
last four years of Vaughan Williams’s life, and set texts by
his wife Ursula. The first, ‘Procris’, is a bleak meditation on
the tragic Greek mythological figure of the title who is
accidentally killed by her husband. ‘Tired’ also deals with
the subject of death, as the singer tenderly tells a loved one
to ‘sleep’ in a beautiful, moving setting. ‘Hand, Eyes, and
Heart’ is the shortest of the set, but nonetheless conveys
a deep sense of love and devotion. The final song returns
to Greek mythology for its subject, specifically the Spartan
King Menelaus. It is more mystical in character after the
melancholy Romanticism of the previous songs, and
quietly optimistic in tone. This orchestral accompaniment
was created by the editor. The songs are available with
their original piano accompaniment in the first volume of
This work is inspired by the English countryside, specifically
the flat, marshy fens of eastern England. It was a landscape
he returned to in his Norfolk Rhapsodies and Fen and Flood.
Although this ‘Symphonic Impression’, as the composer
called it, features moments of the pastoral warmth that
has come to define him, there are also darker passages,
reflecting the bleak emptiness of the fens. Originally
completed in 1904 (making it the earliest work not
withdrawn by the composer), it shows Vaughan Williams’s
later style coming into fruition, but with lingering
Romantic influences.
Although these Preludes were composed with string
quartet in mind, the composer envisaged their being
played by any combination of instruments that could
be gathered together. The first Prelude, ‘Crug-y-bar’, is
an atmospheric Fantasia; the second, ‘St Denio’, is a lively
Scherzo; and the third, ‘Aberystwyth’, is a more substantial
set of variations. As a set, they make an engaging addition
This quartet was written upon the request of Jean Stewart,
a professional viola player, and in light of this the viola part
is prominent throughout. The first three movements are
among the composer’s darkest output: turbulent, bleak,
and menacing. The final movement, however, reaches a
sound world of warmth and serenity reminiscent of the
finale of the Fifth Symphony (the composition of this
work fell between the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, a fact
that is reflected in the musical language). The quartet is
also influenced by Vaughan Williams’s film music: the final
movement is subtitled ‘Greetings from Joan to Jean’, in
reference to the fact that the main theme was originally
intended for the score of a film about Joan of Arc. The
second movement, meanwhile, takes its theme from music
for an escape scene in 49th Parallel.
The Bridal Day is a masque founded on Edmund Spenser’s
Epithalamion, an ode to his bride on their wedding day.
The poem was suggested to Vaughan Williams by Ursula
Wood, whom he later married. The masque comprises a
combination of dances, choruses, solo singing, and spoken
word, with the music reflecting the joyful, untroubled
nature of the words. Vaughan Williams later used the work
as the basis for the cantata Epithalamion.
This melancholic and darkly atmospheric score was
composed as incidental music for a 1913 production of
the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck’s play The
Death of Tintagiles. In the play, Tintagiles’s family have been
murdered by the Queen and, although he tries to escape,
he is ultimately murdered by the Queen too. Marionettes
are used in place of actors in order, demonstrating that
the characters are merely puppets of fate. Despite the
generally morose tone, the music still has moments
of warmth and tenderness, and does not display the
violence and abrasiveness of some of the composer’s later
works.
The one-act ballet Job has been described as one of
Vaughan Williams’s mightiest achievements. It is a work
which, in a full production, combines painting, literature,
music, and dance. The work was inspired by William Blake’s
Illustrations of the Book of Job , and includes quotations
from the King James Bible. The result is a musical
masterpiece, combining the ancient and the modern:
Vaughan Williams’s earlier style is in evidence, including
tranquil pastoral melodies, but the work also anticipates
the composer’s later style.
John Bunyan’s 1678 allegory The Pilgrim’s Progress
fascinated Vaughan Williams throughout his career. He
returned to the text several times in different forms,
but it wasn’t until 1951 that this stage work was finally
completed. Reflecting its long gestation, it encompasses
the whole of the composer’s stylistic gamut: there is serene
lyricism, mystical exoticism, turbulence, violence, and
noble grandeur. The opera was first performed at the Royal
Opera House in 1951.
boisterous. In 2016, Adrian Williams arranged music from
passages. The overture of the opera is available to hire
their charmingly light-hearted melodies and imaginative
orchestral accompaniment. There are also darker moments,
such as the haunting and heart-rending setting of ‘The
Unquiet Grave’ in ‘Autumn’. For this comprehensive new
edition, the editor Graham Parlett has drawn on all
available sources, providing an authoritative full score with
critical commentary. The new second edition also makes
available new materials for the version for string orchestra
This is an unusual setting of the well-known text. After
an ethereal opening, a contralto/mezzo-soprano soloist
sings the Magnificat text while the upper-voice choir
interpolates with other texts in praise of the Virgin Mary.
The rhapsodic lines of the soloist contrast with the more
reflective tone of the choir, while a prominent solo flute
part evokes the otherworldly in a manner reminiscent of
Debussy. This setting is not for liturgical use.
An Oxford Elegy combines adapted versions of The Scholar
Gypsy and Thyrsis by Victorian poet Matthew Arnold to
convey the story of an Oxford scholar who abandons his
friends and studies to live in the countryside surrounding
the city as a gypsy. The work is unusual in that the text is
largely spoken by a narrator, with the chorus providing
mostly wordless accompaniment. The result is a highly
atmospheric and evocative work that combines pastoral
simplicity with darker, more melancholic passages.
This cantata is devised from music from Vaughan Williams’s
well-known stage work The Pilgrim’s Progress, based on
John Bunyan’s allegory of the same name. The composer
never allowed concert or church performances of The
Pilgrim’s Progress, so after his death Christopher Morris and
Roy Douglas devised this cantata (with the endorsement
of the composer’s widow) to allow a selection of the work’s
music to be performed in non-stage settings. Comprising
eight movements, it features some of the most powerful
and affecting music from one of Vaughan Williams’s
defining works.
This three movement work was premiered at the Royal
students under the direction of Sir Adrian Boult. Vaughan
Williams made no concession to the youth of his singers,
producing a powerful work that moves between musical
darkness and light. The poems are by Ursula Wood,
who later became the composer’s wife, and are entitled
‘Darkness and Light’, ‘The Song of the Zodiac’, and ‘The
Messengers of Speech’. Music from the work was later
adapted into the song cycle Sun, Moon, Stars, and Man.
Vaughan Williams provided music for royal ceremonies
several times during his long career; this arrangement
was for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It
is a gloriously majestic setting of the hymn ‘All people
that on earth do dwell’ with spectacular brass fanfares
and opportunities for congregational singing. There are
also calmer moments: verse 4, for example, borrows from
John Dowland’s setting of the psalm, harking back to
the previous Elizabethan age. The work was given its first
concert performance by the Hallé Orchestra under Sir
John Barbirolli in 1957, and a year later was sung at the
composer’s own funeral at Westminster Abbey.
SATB unaccompanied
Vocal score 9780195366105
In this unaccompanied motet, Vaughan Williams sets a text
by the English poet John Skelton (c.1463–1529). The music
captures the spirituality of the text with floating choral
lines and a sophisticated harmonic language, employing
eerie dissonances to create a sense of otherworldliness.
The work carries the following dedication: ‘To the memory
of my master Hubert Parry not as an attempt palely to
reflect his incomparable art, but in the hope that he would
have found in this motet (to use his own words) ‘something
characteristic’ .’
Composed for the enthronement of Dr Cosmo Lang
as the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1928, much of this
striking setting is permeated by emphatically forwardmoving
crotchets. Tonal exploration adds to this sense
of momentum, as does the building of the texture in
the opening passage from powerful choral unison to
resplendent imitation between SATB Decani and Cantoris
voices. Unusually, the piece does not continue to build in
intensity throughout but instead gradually takes on a more
reflective character, with a soft pianissimo chord bringing
it to a restful close. Orchestral and strings accompaniments
Vocal score 9780195366068
This unaccompanied motet was first performed at the
dedication of the Battle of Britain Chapel in Westminster
Abbey, London, and has an accordingly sombre tone. It
opens with a haunting soprano solo, and this ethereal
atmosphere continues with unexpected harmonic shifts
and hushed vocal writing. The words are taken from The
Wisdom of Solomon (3: 1–5) and convey death as peaceful
for those who have been ‘righteous’. This motet would be
particularly well suited to funeral or memorial services.
God’ is the fifth movement of the original work, and is a
hushed, tender setting of Miles Coverdale’s translation of a
hymn by Martin Luther. The second choral, ‘No sad thought
his soul affright’, is the penultimate movement of the work,
gentle tone set in the first choral.
The work concludes with the protagonist passing into
for him on the other side’. In 1951, over a decade after the
publication of Valiant-for-truth, Vaughan Williams’s operatic
adaptation of The Pilgrim’s Progress was performed for the
first time, reflecting his continued interest in Bunyan’s tale.
This gentle chorus sets a love poem by Ben Jonson
(1572–1637). It forms the fourth movement of the cantata
In Windsor Forest, which is based on music from the opera
Sir John in Love. Lilting and expressive, it would make a
cantata, featuring four carol settings: ‘Children’s Christmas
second is a hearty Christmas drinking song; the third is a
tender unaccompanied setting; and the fourth is a warm
and uplifting hymn-like carol.
Vaughan Williams composed this musical ‘nativity play’ in
the final year of his life, yet it is full of vitality and Christmas
spirit, recalling his earlier folk song settings in its musical
style and lightness of mood. The libretto, written by
Simona Pakenham, is based on various medieval pageants,
and the music is founded on traditional Christmas tunes.
Vaughan Williams’s recastings of these familiar melodies
are beautifully crafted, ranging from gently expressivity to
stirring grandeur in tone. The final portion of the work was
not finished upon the composer’s death, so his amanuensis
Roy Douglas completed the work on the basis of the
existing sketches.
In this Christmas cantata, Vaughan Williams uses a wide
range of musical styles to create a compelling, vivid, and
highly original retelling of the Christmas story. Composed
in 1953-4, Hodie (This Day) was Vaughan Williams’s final
large-scale choral-orchestral work, and was premiered
under his own baton in Worcester Cathedral as part
of the 1954 Three Choirs Festival. It comprises sixteen
movements, including ‘narrations’ of words from the Bible,
chorales, and a variety of other forms for both soloists
and choir. The words are taken from diverse sources, with
sacred texts from the Vespers of Christmas Day and the
Bible interspersed with secular texts by poets including
John Milton, Thomas Hardy, and Ursula Vaughan Williams.
