Celebrate Whitefield: ‘The Forgotten Founding Father’

By Stewart Lytle, Reporter

NEWBURYPORT — If you have

never heard of George Whitefield,

you are not alone.

Pronounced Whitfield, the 18th

century charismatic evangelical

preacher has been called “The

Forgotten Founding Father” of this

city and much of the young nation.

But that is likely to change, if

Dr. Sara Singleton and her Great

Awakening Committee have their

way.

Working with his birthplace,

the city of Gloucester, England,

the committee is planning to reintroduce

Whitefield next year,

informing residents of this city and

the world about the impact he had

here and the young colonies.

Together the two cities will commemorate

the 250th anniversary of Whitefield’s death

with events that may include outdoor plays

on Market Square, a featured role at the

Newburyport Literary Festival, readings

at the Newburyport Public Library, a reenactment

of his sermon at Ipswich’s Pulpit

Rock and musical events.

The planned activities will culminate with

a week-long celebration surrounding Sept.

30, the date of his death in 1770, Singleton

said.

The minister of the Old South Presbyterian

Church on Federal Street, Singleton said

the goal of the commemoration is for

Newburyport to gain “an affection for

Whitefield,” whom she called “a catalytic

influence for good.”

Considered America’s first “celebrity,”

the founder of the Old South Church was

almost as well-known in his day as his close

friend, Benjamin Franklin. Whitefield

delivered an estimated 18,000 sermons to

an estimated 10 million listeners in Great

Britain and the American colonies. His

sermons were also printed and distributed

by Franklin’s newspaper, The Pennsylvania

–––––––––––––––––

Gazette.

Whitefield, who was gifted with an

extraordinarily loud voice, drew huge

crowds. One sermon on Boston Common

reportedly attracted a crowd of 23,000. In

Philadelphia, a crowd for one of Whitefield’s

sermons was estimated at 25,000.

At the time of his death about 80 percent

of the American colonists had heard

Whitefield speak or read his sermons.

His burial under the Old South pulpit

caused a day of mourning in the colonies

and England. Newburyport churches rang

their bells, and ships in the Merrimack

River fired their cannons, Singleton said.

But not everyone was sad to see the

controversial minister pass away. Whitefield

incurred the wrath of other ministers and

their congregations who were repulsed

and threatened by his style of evangelical

preaching.

For traditional churchgoers, Whitefield

“rocked the boat,” Singleton said. Ministers

often read their sermons and bored

parishioners fell asleep, she said.

More importantly it came down to money.

Until the early 20th century, churches were

Mr. Daniel Clarke and his wife Mary Colorusso were outstanding,

performing their music and songs to every branch of the military.

Our veterans and seniors had a truly inspiring afternoon. We

want to thank our volunteers who help set up and clean up, and

special thanks to Alison Kolozsvary from Avita of Newburyport for

providing the best ice cream sundaes ever to all veterans and guests.

We had over 100 individuals participating, and all were treated

It should be no surprise that

the woman, who attributes

her election to better use of

But the director, whom she

funded in large part by a pew tax,

where parishioners paid the church

rent for their pews.

When Whitefield preached to

crowds on High Street, he took

away that rental revenue. As a

result, he and his followers were

often harassed by traditional

church goers. Rocks were thrown.

Some even urinated on the crowds

from trees.

Whitefield, who graduated from

the University of Oxford in 1732,

was ordained, but did not settle

in any parish until the Old South

Church was built. He became an

itinerant preacher and evangelist.

In 1740, Whitefield came to

North America to preach a series

of revivals that became part of the

“Great Awakening,” the religious

revival spearheaded by Whitefield

and others in the 1730s and

1740s.

A showman in the pulpit,

Whitefield would enthrall his

audiences, mixing drama with

religious rhetoric. His followers

became animated and were called

“New Lights” or Enthusiasts.

He broke down barriers between

denominations, Singleton said.

He preached that man needed

no king, other than Jesus. This

fueled the desire for more selfgovernment

among the colonists.

Banned from speaking in most

churches, Whitefield delivered his

sermons outside and in non-church

environments. In Newburyport,

where he arrived 30 years to the

day before his death, he delivered

his sermons on High Street and in

a tanner’s barn at Joppa Flats.

When the harassment became

too dangerous to preach outside,

he decided to found the Old South

Church, which was built in nine

weeks by local shipbuilders. It was

said at the time that the church was

communication with residents,

starting with a high quality web

site, she said.

Department heads “are thrilled,”

she said. They are experts in

running their departments, not

writing copy for the web site.

The new mayor also inherited

several major projects. The

huge Maples Center with its

multiple hockey rinks is already

under construction. The new

elementary school will begin

construction soon.

And the renovation of Elm

Street, one of the major gateways

built with two miracles – “no one

was injured and no one cursed.”

Whitefield was also controversial

because of his complicated

relationship with African

Americans. He supported slavery

and used slaves to run an orphanage

he established in Savannah, GA.

But he treated blacks as equals and

established schools for “Negroes.”

The 250th anniversary

commemorations will kick off at

the Newburyport Literary Festival

on April 25 with a talk by Tom

Schwanda, an associate professor

at Wheaton College in Illinois.

Schwanda will discuss his new

book on Whitefield.

Newburyport Public Library will

host book discussions throughout

the summer and Archives Day on

July 25-26. The library will also

display Whitefield’s sermons and

his letters, plus the eulogy from his

burial.

From Sept 26 to Oct. 4,

residents and visitors can watch reenactments

of Whitefield’s trips to

Newburyport on stage at Market

renovation to improve the street

Speaking of the Elm Street

Ipswich Library Presents Special Exhibition for 150th Anniversary

Community Connections

The Ipswich Public Library opened its Doors in 1869, which means this is our 150th year of service to the Ipswich

community.

As part of our celebration, the library has mounted a special museum-format exhibition that explores 150 years of public

service, reading, and culture in our community through the lens of the Ipswich Public Library. Cosponsored by the Ipswich

Public Library and the Ipswich Museum, the exhibition presents a history of the IPL including library cards, do’s and don’ts

of library behavior through the years, and rarely seen highlights from the archives.

“We Business are surrounded by libraries New England,” said Spotlight

Ipswich Public Library Archivist Meghan Petersen. “Sometimes

that leads to us thinking we know everything about their mission and operation, but the evolution of these institutions

permeates just about all aspects of our lives. In Ipswich, there has been broad support for the free public library since before

the doors even opened in 1869. We had a hard time narrowing down the content!”

The exhibition will be on view through December 30th in the Rogers Room of the Library, at 25 North Main Street,

Health & Wellness

BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD

Last year I wrote a column

about a study I saw in an

article from over a decade

ago. It was about the poor

odds people have about

making changes in their life

actually happen. The article

was an outpouring of concern

from healthcare experts and

doctors, all looking for a

way to change the behavior

of people who love their

lifestyle so much that they

were willing to literally die

from it.

In the Johns Hopkins

study, 9 of 10 heart surgery

patients chose to return to

their unhealthy lifestyle,

rather than make the changes

needed to live longer. Very

few were convinced by their

doctors to make radical daily

changes.

Based on my own

experiences trying to move

individuals to change habits

that are having negative

effects on their oral health,

I knew it was difficult, but

was shocked by the 90%

statistic, especially relating

to a do or die scenario. Two

studies from 2013 relating

For so many of us, finances can

be tough, leaving us few options

for the things that make our lives

more meaningful. That’s where

senior discounts can help.

I know ... we don’t like to do

that. But once we get used to the

idea of asking, it gets easier, and

leaves money in our pockets. And

remember, when you ask if there

is a senior discount available,

you won’t be the first to ask that

question.

Brighter Smiles...

specifically to dentistry

confirm that changing

behavior is not easy.

The first study looked at

whether dental hygienists

were as effective as they

thought they were with oral

hygiene instructions. The

role of the dental hygienist

YOU CAN DO IT

The Town Comm

is to instill the need, desire

and ability for patients

to achieve optimum oral

health. The purpose of this

study was to determine if

patients correctly understood

oral hygiene instructions

provided by the hygienist

and to see if the hygienists

felt they were giving patients

individualized instructions.

No big surprise, the

findings showed a disconnect

between what the hygienists

believed they were conveying

to their patients and what

the patients actually hear.

So, part of the problem

with getting people to

change starts with actually

confirming that the person

understands the call to action

and the implications.

The second study was

to determine if a simple

follow-up contact with

the patient would impact

behavioral change. In this

study, patients had a routine

dental hygiene appointment

and were given specific oral

hygiene recommendations

based on their individual

Senior Scene

When Every Dollar Counts

Here are a few ideas:

* If an annual membership at the

local museum is $299 and you can

purchase a senior membership for

$59, you get the same benefits as

those who pay the full price. Sign

up for its newsletters and read them

for a few months to help decide if

it’s worth it to you to see exhibits

and hear speakers.

* If you discover that your favorite

restaurant gives senior discounts,

perhaps you can increase your

dinners out from once to twice a

month, especially if added to other

new discounts you now ask for.

* Check for senior discounts at

the local YMCA. Sometimes during

membership drives, two friends can

sign up for the price of one, or a

needs. Contact was then

made with patients one week

after their appointment.

The patients were asked

if they tried the specifically

recommended products they

had been instructed to use,

if they liked using them,

and why or why not. Only

50 percent of the patients

replied to the call-out from

their hygienist. Of those

who did respond, most said

they tried the specifically

recommended product, but

only 33 percent of them felt

they would continue to use it.

The conclusion of the study

was that follow-up contact

alone is not an effective

method to change behavior

and does not increase

compliance with oral health

recommendations.

So, what does it take to get

people to change their habits?

I think it is safe to say that

some will and some won’t,

no matter the consequences.

spouse can be added for only a few

dollars. Or there’s a discount if you

bring in a few canned goods for the

food pantry (especially during the

holidays).

* Call the nearest college. Chances

are it offers either discounted or

free classes to seniors. Some places

even have what they call Senior

College, with courses geared to

what interests us. Look for brownbag

lunch lectures as well as full

courses.

since Medicare Part B is going up
