Take Art Offices, Flaxdrayton FarmA Message fromChief Executive, Ralph ListerThis season, we think it’s time to celebratethe rural focus of our work! At the front andcentre of our activity lies our rural touringprogramme. Take Art started, back in 1987,as a rural touring agency and while we haveexpanded to explore other creative outlets,the commitment to placing high qualityshows within the heart of village life remainsas strong as ever.The team of volunteer promoters involving40 villages and 200 volunteers annually arean essential part of the mix and without theirpassion and energy we simply couldn’t reachrural audiences. Take Art has, nevertheless,developed all manner of programmes thatconnect and enrich the lives of Somerset’sresidents and you can read about our currentprogramme in this issue.There are comparatively few rural basedarts organisations nationally that are fundedregularly by the Arts Council of England.Some of us are working together to advocatefor locally based and funded arts agenciesthat know and understand their localcommunities.We are doing this by asking the Arts Councilto recognise the imbalance of funding thatmeans rural communities do not get theirequal share of government funding; we arealso writing articles for the national press andgetting airtime on the national media.Much of this work goes under the radar butit is important all the same. As ever we valuethe support we get from Somerset localauthorities.
