Paprika
Balkan Folk from the Wild Wild East
Paprika started out as a Balkan band made
of classically trained musicians, who also
happened to love playing traditional and
gypsy music. Their focus is on bringing
rare and lost Balkan music back to life
through their unconventional formation of
two accordions, guitar and percussion, with
regular guest members on violin and bass.
Fiery melodies and foot-tapping rhythms
are interspersed with lilting laments,
fusing together Eastern European, Balkan,
Gypsy and Classical music in a whirlwind
performance of frenzied virtuosity. Their
Balkan ballads and dance songs, known as
Kolos in Serbia, or Horas in Bulgaria and
Romania, have taken them into the clubs
and festivals of the UK and beyond, from
Glastonbury and WOMAD to the Royal Albert
Hall and Sydney Opera House.
They say that music is the language of the soul
and nothing could be truer for Paprika. This is
a high energy musical experience from a very
exciting group.
