family PROFILE A Transformative Experience Michael Rocca: 2019 Outstanding Accounting Alumnus of the Year WRITTEN BY • SHIRLEY WANG When working as a paperboy as a youngster, Michael Rocca (BBA66) had a regular route that included 100 papers. He bought the copies himself, then went door-to-door collecting payments from readers to earn the money back. 20 IOWA LEDGER 2019

Arzbaecher Actuant Corporation “I kept these meticulous records of all the collections,” he said. “I had this perfectly balanced book every day for two or three years.” It was proof that Rocca was destined to be an accountant. Rocca was named the 2019 Outstanding Accounting Alumnus of the Year at the department’s Beta Alpha Psi banquet in April 2019. “What a privilege it was to come to this university,” Rocca said. “It changed me dramatically.” During his first year at school, his roommate was a wrestler from Long Island named Butch Devine. Rocca was from Cedar Rapids, and while they had very different backgrounds, they became great friends. Devine taught him to play pool and they even teamed up and won pool games at the Iowa Memorial Union. “I walked into my dorm room at Hillcrest on day one and up from the bed hops an individual who introduces himself,” Rocca said. “The first thing I remember was immediate exposure to diversity and building my social skills.” ABOVE: South side of the Iowa Memorial Union circa 1965 (during Rocca’s time at the UI). As a student, he got the chance to interview with the companies that the college brought in to recruit students. This eventually led him to his first job at Honeywell. Rocca made an impression because of his hard-working values. “Trust me, it wasn’t because of my grades,” Rocca said. “It was the Midwestern culture, the work ethic. I had worked my entire way through college, paid for everything myself and [the recruiter] said, ‘You’re the kind of guy we need to have come work for us.’” He worked at Honeywell for 27 years in 13 different jobs, spending time alongside Jerre Stead (BBA65). In 1994, Rocca was appointed as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Mallinckrodt Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturer in St. Louis. Now retired, he sits on the boards of several large companies. “It was a great journey.
