TIPPIE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

HARD TO
BEAT FOR
dreaming big

MAKE YOUR IDEAS REAL
Since taking his first marketing class in high
school, Christian Williams (BBA) had one goal:
start his own agency after college. But at a
university networking dinner, a mentor lit a
new spark: “Why don’t you start your own
business now? I’ll help you get it off the
ground.”
The offer was irresistible.
At SunUp Digital Marketing, Christian
designed logos, websites, and social media
campaigns for everyone from a travel blogger
to a pro athlete to his own sister. Through the
connections he made at Tippie, his network has
grown to include current students, professors,
alumni—and potential new clients.
“I would have never started my
business during my sophomore
year if Tippie hadn’t placed me
next to people who shared my
interests and passions.”

IF YOU’VE GOT THE
AMBITION, WE’VE GOT
THE OPPORTUNITIES
When Ally Disterhoft (BBA) heard
about the Hawkinson Institute’s
reputation as a program for the
brightest finance students, all she
could think was, “Sign me up!”
Through Hawkinson, Ally
connected with ambitious
students, accomplished alumni,
and recruiters from in-demand
companies. Those led to a summer
internship at Barclays in the heart
of New York City. On her final day,
she was offered a full-time job—
plus a signing bonus.
HARD TO
BEAT FOR
career impact

USE WHAT YOU LEARN IN
THE REAL WORLD
Emii Le (BBA) entered the University of Iowa
with some big goals: Learn to develop a
successful marketing strategy from the
ground up. Gain real-world experience
through an internship. Land a marketing job
after graduation.
In her third year at Iowa, Emii was accepted
into Tippie’s Marketing Institute. There, she
helped create a marketing plan for the
Johnson County Food Policy Council. Through
her contacts in the institute, she also snagged
a dream internship at Frontier Natural
Products Co-Op, which turned into a full-time
marketing position.

MAKE CONNECTIONS
THAT COUNT
First-generation college student
Diana Hernandez (BBA) came
from a small high school where
every face was a friend. Getting
acclimated to life on a Big Ten
campus was overwhelming at first.
Diana took action by diving
headfirst into activities at Tippie.
“Student organizations helped me
meet some of my best friends in
college, making it easier to be
away from home,” she said.
But student orgs gave Diana
more than friendship. Business
fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi helped
her network with other students
and faculty, creating professional
connections she’ll use her entire
career. And her involvement in the
Business Student Ambassadors
helped her learn how to juggle
priorities and come out on top.
“Getting involved on campus
was the greatest thing I
could’ve done to overcome
being homesick.”

WHERE WILL
TIPPIE
take you?
“This is a place where you can
grow not only professionally and
academically, but also personally.”

Working toward your BBA is just
the beginning. Here at Tippie,
there’s room to grow. Just ask
Anibal Mares Marquez (BBA). His
experience in Tippie Gateway, a
summer program for high school
juniors from backgrounds
underrepresented in business,
inspired him to pursue a future in
accounting and finance. By taking
advantage of nearly every
opportunity that has come his way,
he’s made sure his student journey
is anything but ordinary.

HARD TO
BEAT FOR
communication
When you study business at the
nation’s #1 writing school, you’ll walk
away with the ability to make your
case in the boardroom, articulate
your ideas to management, and
present bold solutions to your team.

GAIN THE CONFIDENCE
TO MAKE CHANGE
Driven to help others succeed, Iain
O’Connor (BBA) got involved as
a Frank Business Communication
Center tutor, working with
students to improve their business
communication. And he didn’t
stop there. As president of the
Business Student Ambassadors, he
pushed the group to diversify
recruiting, improve multilingual
web materials, and expand virtual
tours in Chinese and Spanish.
Through his leadership, students
with diverse perspectives now
have even more access to all Tippie
has to offer.
The Frank Business Communication Center
is the hub of writing, speaking, and visual
storytelling here at Tippie. We give you
the skills to not only analyze a financial
statement or data set, but also to present
your findings and recommendations in an
organized, professional way.
One-on-one Tutoring
Peer mentors and graduate writing
consultants are eager to help you progress
as a writer and speaker.
Accounting Writing Program
Access tutorials, tutoring, and resources
for the required writing assessments
that are part of every accounting course
at Iowa.
One Button Studio
Use the latest presentation and recording
software to practice your speeches, talks,
and presentations.
Plus, Tippie undergrads have the
chance to compete in national Case
Competitions that focus on teamwork
and communication skills. In 2020,
Tippie teams placed first in the NASBITE
International 2020 Student Case
Competition and third in the National
Diversity Case Competition.

PIVOT FROM WALLFLOWER TO
CAMPUS LEADER
Never underestimate the power of introverts.
When Nayong Quan (BBA) moved to Iowa
City from northeastern China her freshman
year, she didn’t know anyone and even
dreaded going to orientation.
After a little push from her advisors, she
broke out of her shell and joined every
campus organization her schedule allowed.
She went on to win a top Washington, D.C.
internship and become a campus leader. At
Tippie, Nayong created a network to unleash
her true character and kick off her career.
