Happy New Year from staff & students!

The end of the year has been a busy one

not just with the approach of Christmas but

many other activities too. The first of our Curriculum

Days saw students learning ‘off timetable’. Amongst

the subjects discussed were attitudes around mental

health. Showing maturity and thoughtfulness the

session was very successful with students thinking of

ways to support their own mental wellbeing.

During our chilly weather we were delighted to

welcome our guest from considerably warmer climes,

Fernando Batalla, Principal of Taronja Spanish School

in Valencia, who gave a seminar in his native tongue

to students at the academy with the aim of promoting

cultural awareness. We heard about traditions, customs

and festivals that make Spain a unique and different

country. Students responded very well to the content

delivered in Spanish and are excited about the prospect

of a study trip to Valencia in the future.

Chilly or not, our Year 10 Business Studies students

wrapped up warmly and enjoyed a trip to Banham

Zoo to learn how it operates. Naturally the zoo must

run as a successful

business to allow

it to continue to

play a part in the

conservation and

care of its variety

of animals from

around the world.

They investigated

how market research is used to find out customer needs

as well as studying the customer services offered. An

introduction to Milky, the eagle owl was also part of this

unique experience!

When the school day is over for some, there is plenty

of activity in our Performing Arts Facility. Around 30

Junior school students along with 25 of our own have

been ‘treading the boards’ at the weekly Drama Club.

Learning confidence and teamwork skills through

improvisation and performing sketches, these young

people have enjoyed working together. Some of the

quotes from the youngest include “It’s been great to

perform on a big stage and work with scripts” & “We

meet new people, it is fun doing plays with them”. The

older students have been just as complimentary adding

“they are great to work with, always so energetic” &

“they are really enthusiastic”. Building on the success

of their collaboration, students are working towards a

performance at Easter - something we all look forward

to!

Our stage was also put to good use on our recent

Prize-giving & Awards Evening when we celebrated the

success of students from across the academy gaining

various awards in areas such as academic achievement,

attendance, perseverance & improvement. We were

also delighted to welcome back our alumni who

were presented with their Exam Certificates from

the summer and had a chance to catch-up with their

peers and staff. Our guest speaker for the evening was

Flying Officer Kerridge

from RAF Marham

who is an ex-student

of the academy and

whose speech was

inspirational and well

received by all.

Finally, we catch up on

our Christmas activities:- Poppy Sandford-More, Year

7, was the proud winner of the Academy Christmas

Card Competition. Her

wonderful creation was

sent to all local schools and

contacts with our good

wishes for the Season.

Our students chose two

good causes to support

during December, the

first being the Swaffham

Foodbank and the second

being socks stuffed with

essential items for the

homeless. (We must add

thanks to parents/carers

and members of the public who also supported our

appeals together with Anglia Sports & School Wear,

our uniform provider, who donated all the socks!). We

are extremely proud of our students for demonstrating

care and compassion for those less fortunate.
