B’nai B’rith Holds Annual Leadership ForumFocusing on “Global Security in an Insecure World”By Katherine DolgenosAll photos: Lloyd Wolf, www.lloydwolf.comB’nai B’rith International’s 2019Leadership Forum, held inWashington, D.C. from Nov. 2to Nov. 4, featured prominent speakersfrom the realms of diplomacy,public policy and the media, as wellas a reception for participants at theresidence of the Japanese ambassador.In his State of the Organizationaddress, President Charles O.Kaufman spoke about the ways B’naiB’rith is active globally in combatinganti-Semitism and fighting for Israelon the world stage, as well as our workwith senior housing and aiding disaster-struckcommunities. Kaufman alsopresented the President’s Award to 30individuals for their efforts to advanceB’nai B’rith’s mission.“B’nai B’rith has a long and distinguishedhistory of leadership in takingstrong stands on behalf of our peoplearound the world. And we made ourcollective, global voice heard onceagain,” Kaufman said. “However,understanding that the pen can bemightier than the sword, I decidedthat a direct way to confront emerginghate was through correspondence. Itook to the keyboard in protest lettersregarding situations at Jewish museumsin Berlin, Munich and Warsaw. Icontinue to follow these issues closely.Our actions were followed in theJerusalem Post and The Economist,among other places.”Thirty B’nai B’rith members were recognized and honored for their extraordinaryservice with the new President’s Award.B’nai B’rith International CEODaniel S. Mariaschin addressed theglobal challenges of anti-Semitism.“Whether it occurs in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, or Warsaw, Poland, orCrown Heights, Brooklyn, anti-Semitismmust be confronted aggressively,”Mariaschin said. “The responsibilityto do so falls squarely on all of us,together with our allies and all peopleof conscience. Just as the very existenceof the Jewish people and theJewish state is a product of hope anddetermination, we must continue toapply these qualities to the challengeat hand. The security of our communitydepends on it.”Ambassador Gonzalo Koncke, chiefof staff for Organization of AmericanStates Secretary General LouisAlmagro, and Eduardo Kohn, B’naiB’rith International’s director for LatinAmerican Affairs, discussed the securityoutlook of the Western hemisphere.Koncke emphasized the OAS’scommitment to fighting anti-Semitism through the promotion ofhuman rights and democracy.
