OlshanAssociate Executive Vice President, B’nai B’rith InternationalAfew days after the 2016 election,a young colleague came into myoffice, closed the door and asked ifwe could talk. He was experiencing a veryuneasy feeling of what we were about tobe living through as a country. He asked,“How are we going to get through this?You lived through similar times in the 60sand 70s. Will we be okay?”While I shared many of his concernson a personal level, I counseled that I feltthe system was much stronger than anyone individual, and that we had learnedwhat it takes to make things work, eventhrough difficult times.Okay, so I was wrong.We are now experiencing a near totalgridlock on some of the most criticallyimportant issues of our times. So, fromthis person’s perspective, the system isundeniably broken.In the 1980s Republican PresidentRonald Reagan, the great communicator,with whom I disagreed vehementlyon domestic spending and economicpolicies, had a very positive personaland working relationship with the thenDemocratic House Speaker Tip O’Neill.Together, they created some very popularand important bipartisan legislation.There wasn’t the same vitriol permeatingthe air that we find in politics today. Thesystem worked, to a point.Unfortunately, compromise cannot,and will not ever happen in today’spolitically toxic climate. Thecountry is more divided than it was beforethe last election. We have made no investmentin our nation’s infrastructure; theAffordable Care Act (ACA) is still holdingup but has been significantly weakenedby inaction to improve on it and periodicattempts to gut it altogether. Too manycandidates are trying to gain traction bydoing everything they can to weaken theiropponents rather than uniting to changethe status quo.To quote New York Times columnistTom Friedman: “Dear Democrats:This is not complicated! Just nominatea decent, sane person, one committedto reunifying the country and creatingmore GOOD jobs … And that candidatecan win!”Even Tom Hayden, radical activist ofthe 1960s, learned that you must get intothe political mainstream to effect any realchange. Candidates who embrace policiesthat are unpopular with the majority ofB’NAI B’RITH 51
