Each of the show sites and show homes are unique. 

From the one-of-a-kind floor plans to the spectacular entertainment centers and

Multigenerational Living 

GRANDPARENTS, PARENTS AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE SHARING SPACE, EXPENSES AND DAILY LIVES

HOMEARAMA ® is known for showcasing the latest living trends. And this year that 

includes two properties featuring two separate-but-connected homes—a first in 

the show’s 55-year history. 


High Pointe Custom Homes’ Lighthouse and Heritage entries— 

and the three generations who will live in each—represent a 

growing trend toward multigenerational living. In 2016, 20 percent 

of the U.S. population lived with three or more generations 

under one roof, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis. 

That’s more than at any time since at least 1950. While multigenerational 

homes still make up a marginal percentage of the 

local market, Dan Dressman, the executive director of the Home 

Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati, expects the trend will 

continue to gain steam, as it allows families to share household 

chores, expenses and, most importantly, their daily lives. 

“This will provide another opportunity for baby boomers to 

spend more time with their kids and grandchildren,” Dressman

says. “It’s another housing solution for the growing empty nester 

phenomenon.” 

As a local builder and a resident of a multigenerational homestead, 

Mike Williams, the developer of Highlands at Heritage Hill, 

has firsthand experience with the value and growing interest in 

this living arrangement. He worked with city and county officials 

to create seven multigenerational home sites in the 43-home community:

HERE TO HELP 

While building a multigenerational 

home can yield savings—through 

shared construction 

costs and utilities, for 

example—for most buyers the 

choice is about making it easier 

to take care of each other. 

“We decided it was mutually 

beneficial. Right now it probably 

benefits us more with 

the kids, but later as (our parents) 

age and may have health 

problems, it will benefit them,” 

says Jill Aston, who will live 

in Heritage A with her husband, 

Scott, and their three 

children. Scott’s parents, Candy 

and Barry Aston, will live in 

Heritage B. 

Multigenerational living also 

means more hands on deck, 

making it easier for everyone 

to keep up with property 

maintenance and daily chores. 

“Anytime you have more 

adults living in one area, work 

gets divided, whether it’s taking 

care of the lawn or meals 

or each other,” Jill says. 

Candy and Barry, who spend 

much of the year in Florida, 

won’t have to worry over who 

is taking care of their property 

while they’re away. 

Erin will live in Lighthouse 

with her husband, Bryan, their 

three children and Erin’s parents, 

Mark and Nancy. She 

expects a divide-and-conquer 

approach will enable each 

member of her household to 

do more of what they love— 

like gardening or cooking— 

and less of what they dread. 

INDEPENDENT LIVING 

Despite the perks, the move to multigenerational living wasn’t 

an easy decision, especially for Candy and Barry and Mark and 

Nancy. They initially rejected the idea, envisioning a lack of 

privacy and freedom that would come from living in their “children’s” 

house. While the solution for these families was to build 

connected homes that function independently, multigenerational 

living can be as separate or combined as a family wishes, ranging 

from homes with multiple master suites to those with privately 

accessed apartments. 

The exterior of Lighthouse resembles any other single-family 

home, but the two front doors, driveways and garages hint at the 

separate living spaces, which are connected via a door in the parlor 

and in the lower level of the main house. Even their respective 

patios are positioned for privacy. 

“We designed everything with privacy in mind, to be separate 

but yet really convenient,” Erin says of their homes. 

Each of the older couples also designed with aging in place in 

mind. Candy and Barry can easily consolidate their ranch home to 

live in just a few rooms, if needed, and Mark and Nancy’s space 

is completely wheelchair accessible. 


MULTIGENERATIONAL, NOT MULTI-FAMILY 

Local building and zoning regulations, which vary from community 

to community, also influence the design of a multigenerational 

home. To be considered a single-family home rather than a 

multi-family property, multigenerational dwellings might need to 

have a shared roof or utilities, or demonstrate more ambiguous 

characteristics like “shared connectivity,” Williams explains. In 

the Highlands at Heritage Hill, they must be connected by living 

space, and the “secondary” home cannot exceed 3,000 square 

feet. 

This requirement inspired the underground connection between 

Heritage A and Heritage B. A prefabricated concrete bridge structure, 

which Scott uses in his work as an engineer, forms the 

32-foot dining hall that runs between the lower-level prep kitchen 

and wine room in Heritage A and the lower-level recreation space 

in B. 

DAILY QUALITY TIME 

Jill already can picture hosting 

holidays and, maybe, someday, 

the wedding reception for one 

of her children in the dining 

hall. But the owners of both 

the Heritage and Lighthouse 

are most excited about the little 

moments of family time that 

come with multigenerational 

living—like waiting with the 

kids at the bus stop or sharing a 

quick weekday meal. By living 

with Grandma and Grandpa, 

rather than just seeing them on 

weekends and holidays, “our 

kids get the opportunity to be 

influenced by a different generation,” 

Williams says. 

Even when problems arise, 

Erin sees the opportunity for 

a life lesson: “I’m excited for 

them to see what it means to 

be a family and be there for 

one another when things are 

tough,” she says. 

Looking further down the 

road, none of the families are 

concerned about the resale 

of such a customized home: 

They all envision their property 

passing from generation to 

generation. 

“Our future hope is we’ll 

move into (Candy and Barry’s) 

house and one of our kids will 

move into our house with their 

family,” Jill says.

PAINT COLORS THAT MAKE A STATEMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SHOW

In the hands of HOMEARAMA ® designers, paint is no mere finish. From 

shades of gray to punches of bold hues, it serves a supporting role, contributing 

to the home’s story. Here’s what a few of the colors have to say.

RUSTIC MADE MODERN 

Shades of gray set the tone in Heritage A by High Pointe Custom Homes, but colors like Outer Space 

bring the drama—particularly when paired with brick, hand-hewn beams and metal barn doors. 

“Mixing dark colors with the textures seen around the house just adds to the rustic charm,” says 

Shannon Conley of Designs on Madison, who designed the space with Julia Bender and Amy Holt.

“The year 1918 meets the year 2018” 

in Joan Marie by The Leland Group, 

with rustic and glamorous elements 

mingling for a dramatic effect. To 

heighten the intrigue, designer Katie 

Linich of Creative Environments by 

Carol & Katie used jewel tones alongside 

natural elements like wide-plank 

flooring and Indiana limestone. 

Cape Verde, from Sherwin-Williams, 

“is a beautiful, rich emerald color that 

is used to pick up the color from the 

living plants scattered throughout the 

house,” Linich says, adding that the 

shade looks gorgeous alongside brass 

and polished nickel. 

Bosporus is “a beautiful sapphire 

color that plays nicely with Cape 

Verde,” she says. Look for it in surprising 

places, like a bathroom ceiling 

and on closet doors.

EYES ON THE ARCHITECTURE 

“Southern living with farmhouse 

touches” is the way Jill Koch and 

Julia Bender of Designs on Madison 

describe The Ashby Manor by 

Wieland Builders. To keep the focus 

on the home’s charming architectural 

details—like rustic ceiling beams and 

a stone wall in the great room—they 

opted for a neutral color scheme, 

using Anew Gray in the main living 

area. “It’s a soft color that pulls gray 

and beige, letting the beams ‘sing’ in 

the space,” Koch explains.

CLASSIC, WITH AN EDGE 

To play up, rather than drown 

out, the custom woodworking in 

Stone Wood by Frazier Homes, 

designer Erin Tuemler of Interior 

Design Consulting, Inc. deployed 

measured portions of high-impact 

patterns and a crisp black tone, 

Black Magic. “It makes a bold 

statement while staying neutral,” 

she says. The resulting style is 

classic and comfortable, and just a 

little edgy.

In The Woodburn by Sterling Homes, a garage door opens to an 

outdoor dining area. But that isn’t the only unexpected pop of 

blue and green in the home, designed by Amy Holt and Cindy 

Crawford of Designs on Madison. Rich tones like Waterloo, in the 

powder room, and Greenfield, on a lower-level wall, provide a 

fresh punch of color against the light and airy palette of whites, 

grays, beiges and ivory. 

TRANSITIONAL AND INIMITABLE 

One-of-a-kind pecky cypress—in ceiling beams and kitchen cabinetry—is a starring 

element in the transitional farmhouse feel of Homegrown by High Pointe Custom 

Homes. So designers Jill Koch and Cindy Crawford of Designs on Madison chose 

subdued Mindful Gray for the home’s main areas. “We really wanted a light color 

that didn’t take away from the wood accents throughout,” Koch explains. 

RELAX 

In the smaller home on High Pointe Custom Homes’ Lighthouse property, the 

main living area has a relaxed and warm, yet, airy feel, enhanced by a couple 

coats of Front Porch. “It brings the beach to the room in a subtle and neutral 

way,” says Shannon Conley from Designs on Madison, who designed the home 

with Amy Holt.
