Most of us who love ourgardens, aren’t that deterredby the cold weather. Andwhether it’s fair weather or foul, there’salways something you can be gettingon with to make sure your garden islooking its best come the Spring. So, ifyou’re thinking of getting outside whenthe weather permits, here are a few topjobs for the months ahead.JanuaryIf Christmas has kept you away fromyour garden, the new year is a goodtime to get outside and check how yourgarden is doing. Start by checking thatall stakes, ties and supports are still inplace.January is also a great time for pruning.Cut back roses to just above any budsand remove any dead branches. Cutback and trim any damaged or diseasedwillow branches as well as thinning outovercrowded stems. Begin pruningapple and pear trees, blackcurrants,gooseberries and redcurrants. Cut backornamental grasses to within a fewcentimetres of the ground.If you haven’t already, remove anyweeds from your borders and cut backthe collapsed stems of perennials,although watch out for any new growth.Check any stored bulbs and tubersfor rot. Then head in doors with somecatalogues and plan this years’ plantingand order any seeds, bulbs or plants.FebruaryNow is the time to cut back any wisteriaside shoots to three buds from thebase, as well as pruning late-summerflowering clematis, cutting stems back tohealthy buds about 30cm from the base.Prune winter-blooming shrubs such asmahonia, winter jasmine and heathers,once they've finished flowering.The wonderful thing about February isthat you can also start potting up yourcontainers with hardy spring beddingplants for that first flash of colour.MarchAs the garden slowly starts to comeback to life, there is plenty to keep usbusy. Finish off any pruning for plantssuch as roses and continue deadheadingspring flowers and any remaining winterbedding. Then add general-purposefertiliser to flowerbeds and around roses,shrubs and hedges. Feed ericaceousshrubs, such as rhododendrons, azaleasand camellias, and tidy up borders,removing weeds, before mulchinggenerously with garden compost.Now at last you can start planting liliesand other summer-flowering bulbs inpots and borders, as well as planting newroses and other shrubs and climbers. Anddon’t forget to look out for slugs andprotect any new spring shoots.Gardening | 47
