CAMP DESCRIPTION AND BACKGROUND

Camp Wakonda is part of the

Ozarks Regional YMCA located in

the beautiful Ozarks of Southern

Missouri. Only 13 miles from

Springfield, Missouri where

residents enjoy world-class

attractions and dining along with

spectacular entertainment,

lakes, rivers, and cultural

endeavors. The area offers top

schools, world-class hospitals, a

low cost of living, a wellrounded

city that supports a

thriving arts community and an

excellent quality of life.

The camp facilitates rentals,

summer residential camps for

second graders through high

school seniors, and a growing

outdoor education program that

serves 350 students from

Springfield Public Schools. It

serves over 500 youth campers

each summer from Missouri and

surrounding states.

The camp was originally founded in 1914 on the banks of the White River. Between 1952 and 1953,

camp moved to its present location on the banks of Goose Creek just southwest of Halltown, MO.

Camp Wakonda’s 100 acres of woodlands, fields and streams are home

to multitude of wildlife including deer, turkeys, owls, hawks, squirrels,

and woodchucks.

A climbing tower, high & low ropes courses, archery & rifle ranges, arts &

crafts, nature center and pool offer campers opportunities to try new

skills. Lifelong friendships are created and growth in self-confidence and

self-esteem develops a sense of newfound independence. Historic dining

and recreation halls and a new solar bath and shower house round out

the facilities and offer campers the creature comforts of camp. A new

lake was completed in 2016 providing campers the opportunity to

participate in canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Campers also enjoy swimming, a water trampoline, the

blob, and a giant Slip-n-Slide.

JOB SUMMARY

The successful candidate is responsible for overall camp operations,

including the recruitment and retention of both campers and staff.

The executive camp director will develop long range plans to ensure

the continued growth of the camp, including marketing, programs,

communication and superior customer service strategies.

The executive director will work with the association’s leadership,

camp advisory board, and collaborate with outside organizations and

community groups to promote the camp’s successes and extend its

reach. The candidate is responsible for the overall safety and

enjoyment of the participants by promoting and role modeling a

healthy and safe environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure delivery of high-quality camp programming by collaborating with the assistant camp

director, continuing education and training on cultural shifts and activity trends to remain current

with information on the developmental needs of youth, teens, and families.

• Oversee, with the help of the assistant camp director, the daily operation of resident camps,

rentals, and outdoor experiences. Responsibilities include food service, business operations,

successful camper and staff supervision, and health care services.

Utilize prudent decision-making and continually analyze data regarding enrollment trends,

recruitment and retention strategies, as well as program outcomes.

• Manage property development and maintenance needs to ensure stewardship of current resources

and identification of future needs.

• Oversee financial management, budgeting, and fund development to allow for adequate annual

funding that meets operational goals.

• Develop and design long-term fund-raising strategies for the camp program and facilities with the

assistance of the camp advisory board.

• Recruit and retain staff based on camper enrollment and program management requirements by

implementing human resources compliance practices and procedures.

• Train staff on crisis communication, emergency response, and risk management procedures.

Apply basic youth development principles in working with staff through communication,

relationship development, and respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of

youth.

• Always ensure safe and efficient operations for camp facilities by conducting annual assessments

of safety, trainings, property and maintenance needs.

• Ensure licensing/certification for facility elements, programs, and equipment records are current,

maintained, and on file regarding inspections and regulations.

• Seek and analyze input from youth, camper parents, alumni, families, and staff regarding the

quality of the camp experience. This includes feedback on camp programs, staff, and safety.

• Excellent written communication skills with grant writing, marketing,

and correspondence.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB

• Apply appropriate safety and emergency procedures.

• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to

weather and program activities.

• Lead and participate in recreational activities which may include running, throwing, and kicking.

• Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an

emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to

maintain constant supervision of staff.

• Endurance including: prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking,

climbing, and stretching: requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate

outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record,

camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with

daily exposure to the sun, heat, insect and animals.

• Required residence on Camp Premises to serve as caretaker and have the availability to respond

to Emergencies at any time

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree (Parks and recreation, human services, education, social services, business or

equivalent)

• Six or more years of operational experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not-for-profit camp

environment.

• Two years of experience managing a budget of $300,000 or more.

• Three years of experience supervising multiple staff. YMCA Multi-Team certification highly

preferred.

• Knowledge of ACA Accreditation requirement.

• Certifications required within 30 days of hire: American Red Cross CPR and First Aid
