NCV HOSTS MINISTER
WANG XINING
On 23 October 2019, the NCV community, a
number of UNSW academics, and others from
the wider community gathered for NCV’s Spring
Formal Dinner. The speaker was Mr Wang Xining, the
Minister of the Chinese Embassy in Australia. He was
asked to share his perspectives on the future of China
and Australia, particularly in regards to emerging
opportunities over the next decade.
Minister Wang Xining began his address by
crediting China’s rapid economic growth to the
people’s work ethic, inclusiveness, adaptiveness,
coherence and compassion. He then spoke of the
mutual benefits of China and Australia’s trade and
investment relationship and identified possibilities for
growth in this area. Minister Wang Xining encouraged
Australia and China to continue managing their
differences for long-term and mutually beneficial
cooperation. The Minister concluded by addressing
the residents more directly: “I hope the younger
generation will look ahead and think about what the
world will be, [what] the Asia-Pacific region will be
and [what] China-Australia relations will be 10 or 20
years [from now], and what we can do together to
make the world a better place, to make our region
more prosperous, and China-Australia relations more
productive and influential”.
The evening’s program featured a piano
performance by NCV resident Jagdeeshwar Guptha,
a question time with the speaker, and vote of thanks
delivered by resident Alex Downes. The NCV Spring
Formal Dinner was a stimulating evening, providing a
perspective on issues that are highly topical for both
Australia and the world. AD
