Since 2017, Collegians have been usingtheir annual Night in White party to raise awarenessand funds for women and children escaping domesticviolence. This year, 15 collegians bleached their hairto raise money for Mary’s House and Collegianspulled together an impressive $861. Night in White is awonderful example of the spirit of community servicethat is a core part of being a New Collegian, and anexpression of the compassion fostered in thehearts of collegians during their time at New!Night in White24New’n’Old 2019
MENTAL HEALTH WEEK:HOW DID WE GET HERE?NCCOMMUNITYAssistant Dean JacquiWilling shares an accountof the incredible growth ofMental Health Week overrecent years:Mental illness is one of thesingle greatest issues facingyoung people aged 18-24years old today, and ratesof psychological distress in this agegroup are still on the rise. 1 Residentialcolleges can often house some of ournation’s most at-risk groups. Researchconducted by The National Centre ofExcellence in Youth Mental Health in2017 found that students at Australianuniversities at greater risk of poormental health are internationalstudents, rural/regional students,medicine students, and thoseundergoing major life transitions –the primary demographics for NewCollege. This threat to residentsis front of mind amongst theAdministrative leadership, withseveral appointments of dedicatedpastoral care roles in recent years.But, as a current collegian myself,what I have found most inspiringover my four years is the passion withwhich residents have championedaction within the community andadopted the fight against societaltaboos on the front line, in oureveryday conversations and culture.Beginning in 2014, Mental HealthDay was a new initiative by the NCSAExec: an exercise in wellbeing andbuilding care and connection amongstcollegians. But in 2016, a group ofcollegians came forward to transformthe wellbeing day into a bi-annualweek-long festival of activities withmental health directly in the spotlight.Over the coming years,professional guest speakers from theBlack Dog Institute and Headspacewere invited into college to raiseawareness and education on mentalillness. College subcommitteesalso stepped up with collaborativeinitiatives: craft afternoons, tea andmusic on the bridge, meditation, slampoetry, blanket forts in the courtyard,dumpling-making, mural painting,and exercise mornings. In 2017, ourbeloved college Receptionist VickiVardaoulis began to run cookingclasses, which proved to be verypopular, and in 2018, residents withlocal family brought in their pet dogsfor some well-needed patting on theVillage Green.In 2017, the NCSA also wrote tothe Administration to formalise along-running cry in the communityfor a consultant counsellor to be madeavailable and Residential Advisors toreceive mental health first aid training.These steps eventuated in 2019,whenafter many repeated requests by theNCSA, Master Bill Peirson establisheda partnership between New College,New College Postgraduate Village, andAnglicare via counsellor and alumnaJenny Nixon (née Wigg, NC 1989-90).Through all of this, collegians wereexplicit in their courage to stare downthe issues that claim more lives ofyouth every year than accidents onthe road. 2 In 2017, we began a storynight inviting residents to bravelyshare their experiences with mentalillness, many speaking for the firsttime in public. Six story nights havenow been held with fifteen collegiansleading by example to show that thereis no shame in being vulnerable withour mental health or in asking forprofessional and personal help.In my four years in the building,I’ve seen residents transform theculture around this issue in ourcommunity. While there’s still much tobe done, I am incredibly proud of theirleadership and the legacy residentscontinue to carry on in their advocacyand support for each other.
