Actually, they are pretty tricky to start, let alone complete (perhaps these space-filling opening lines of little substance are an indication of that very fact). You see, not only do these new year welcoming words need to be committed to ink before the old year has dragged itself over the finish line, but they also need to be finalised well before the Christmas celebrations. That makes it hard to focus on a clear, January-themed message through the red and green haze of the festive season. No sympathy please. Us editors must press on with meaningful, insightful and pithy welcomes no matter how much tinsel surrounds our monitors. The problem, I believe, arises because of the discombobulating effect of the post-Christmas and pre-new year period. A six-day time warp that, as Michael McIntyre perfectly describes in his stand-up routine, leaves us all confused as to what day it is. Is there post today? Are the bins collected today? Can I park here today? All tricky questions for the last week of the year. Combine that with the scramble to hit earlier-than-usual print deadlines in December and it leaves January – let alone the new year and the new decade – feeling more out of touch than most politicians. Inevitably, January is now here. A new year is here. A new decade is here. (And a new government is here – which will last the longest?) But there’s often an anticlimactic twang when ringing in the new year, and ringing in a new decade may not offer much more excitement, especially given the majority of readers will have experienced the ringing in of a new millennium. However, the power of a new year lies in the months ahead, not the seconds before. So, after the Christmas blur, we can start to refocus on the year to come and ask ourselves: do I have 2020 vision?
