ANY OF THE CONDITIONS ABOVE may belong to an
autoimmune disorder. Dr Malik and his team at Improve Your
Smile are offering a new service for your general health –
likely to benefit your oral health too. Nutritional therapist ADELE
DOBSON is now on hand to treat autoimmune disorders and other
conditions. We asked Adele to tell us more.
What is an autoimmune disorder?
The immune system normally guards against bacteria and viruses.
When it senses these foreign invaders, it will normally send out an
army of fighter cells. With an autoimmune disorder, the system
attacks healthy cells instead of protecting them.
Are autoimmune disorders common?
Yes, and they are on the increase. The most commonly known ones
include rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, pernicious anaemia, psoriasis,
vitiligo, Sjögren’s Syndrome (‘dry mouth’ syndrome), coeliac disease,
inflammatory bowel diseases and certain thyroid conditions – but
there are many more.
What causes autoimmune disorders?
Toxicity is a major factor. This may be in what we eat – including what
might be absorbed by food and drink from inappropriate packaging
for example, or from chemical treatments. Depending on where we
live, air pollution may also be affecting us through every breath, or via
our skin. Other factors are genetics, environment, nutrient deficiencies,
inappropriate diet, stress, lack of sleep, trauma and lack of exercise.
Also, lack of joy, satisfaction or fulfilment! Even
thought processes can cause toxicity in the
body. The effects of emotional health on
physical health have long been accepted.
Why are these disorders on the rise?
Historically there’s never been such a rapid
change in food sources and farming methods.
Our bodies aren’t evolving fast enough to
handle it and there are more harmful
nanoparticles in the air than before.
How can you help?
We look at what is going on in your body’s
systems at cellular level in connection with
the day-to-day patterns of your life. Nutritional
therapists (to correct a common misunderstanding)
are not principally dietitians,
although treatment may include changing certain
eating habits. People are used to just going
to a doctor and taking some tablets. But there
is little opportunity to learn to take responsibility
for our health and all that contributes
to it, so invariably we get ill again. I offer help
in relieving, reducing and minimising symptoms.
When the patient feels better, I work
with them to help them stay that way.
What does treatment involve?
My approach is different for every person because
genetics, lifestyles, diets, cultures and
attitudes to living vary. I create a day-to-day
life pattern for each individual to work with,
taking into account exercise, sleep, work and
general stress levels which we’ll seek to improve.
Effective treatment is a two-way thing
throughout – but it always starts with making
that first appointment!
ADELE DOBSON can work with
you to turn your state of health and
happiness right round. Book a free
