PROSTATE CANCER — BY THE NUMBERS
Your Health
By Max Hammonds, MD
“Cal, are you gonna shuffle the spots off
the cards?” Burt was winning tonight and
wanted to see the next big pot. “C’mon,
deal.”
“What’s wrong, Cal?” Olen could see Cal’s
mind was not on the game.
Slowly Cal set the cards down and stared
at his hands as they lay on the table. “I got a
bad report today from my urologist.”
“What kind of a bad report?” Don was
worried. “Are you okay?”
“I don’t know.” Cal looked up. “All I know
is – my PSA number increased over last
year.”
“Your what number?” Burt was still concentrating
on the game.
“His PSA number – the prostate-specific
antigen. It tells about how big his prostate is,”
Jack said.
“Or whether Cal might have prostate cancer,”
added Don.
“C’mon, how do you guys know that?” Burt
chided, reaching for the deck.
“I’ve been watching my numbers lately as
well.” Jack’s voice was low and hesitant. “Doc
says that a PSA over 4 is worrisome. And I’m
getting’ close.”
“My doctor says that it’s how fast the PSA
climbs up that’s most important,” Don added. “All
of us have increasing PSAs as we get older. But
more than a point a year – you have to look into
what’s causing it to go up so fast.”
“And that’s what mine did this last year,” Cal
spoke up again. “And I’m worried.”
“Aw, stop yer worryin’. Just eat more catsup as
I do.” Burt was shuffling the deck now.
“Doc says that doesn’t work,” Jack said. “The
lycopene – the stuff in tomatoes that makes
them red – they found out it doesn’t prevent
cancer. And neither does fish oil. Fish oil may
increase the risk of the worst kind of cancer.
Same thing for Vitamin E.”
“You guys are just fulla good news,
ain’tcha? Are we going to play cards or
not?” Burt was frustrated.
“Hey, man, this is serious business,” Olen
said. “Cal’s worried. And we need to be, too,
for him.”
“Well, the good news is that most of the
time, a slowly rising PSA is just the prostate
gradually getting bigger,” Don said. “And,
most of the time, if they find any cancer in
the prostate, it is so slow-growing that it
won’t cause any major problems during your
lifetime. Just needs to be watched.”
“Yep, that’s what my doc said. Just watch the
numbers and take your medicines to help relax
the prostate so you can pee,” laughed Jack,
breaking everyone else into laughter as well.
“Well, that’s not so bad, then,” Burt laughed,
starting to peel the top card off the deck.
“Well, it’s still serious,” Olen warned. “Watching
the numbers probably means getting a digital
