Co-President’s Message

Wendy Drabinski & Linda Needel

Last month, we tried something new for Hanukkah – Daven and Dine In.

It looked like everyone had a wonderful time! We had a delicious meal

and would like to thank everyone for contributing to it. We then

decorated and ate donuts with all kinds of wonderful fillings. There were

also other delicious and beautifully decorated treats. The kids played

several different games and engaged in Hanukkah crafts. We even had

raffles and won prizes! Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make

this such a memorable event!

This month, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with our friends

from St. James AME Church and the Masjid Al Falaah Mosque. Please

look for details in the flyer in this newsletter and join us!

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Wendy and Linda

Security Team News

Pat Wolkow

This month of January, we have arranged for security training and

planning for temple leadership and teachers. In this training we will

learn how to best prepare for emergencies through developing a plan of

action, and for those who have not been trained in Stop the Bleed and

CPR. Dates are Wednesday’s the 8th, 15th, & 22nd.

“Are response to security emergencies must be as instinctive as our response to a fire

drill!”

Leadership and teachers, please contact me immediately if you have not

RSVP’d to me yet!

Anyone interested in joining the team, contact Pat Wolkow.

Greetings from the Religious Practices Committee.

Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow

We hope that you had an opportunity during the Hanukkah season to

take time away from your regular schedule and enjoy yourselves with

friends and family. Several of us on the RPC attended the Union for

Reform Judaism (URJ) Biennial in Chicago from December 11-15. It was

quite an experience! Over 5000 Jews from virtually every U.S. state and

Canadian province in North America convened to study, pray, sing,

dance and celebrate together. The overarching theme this year was

“Building Relationships” with sessions covering topics of Innovation,

Action, and Community. The lessons learned challenged us all to

reimagine our personal Judaism and consider what we can do to enrich

our relationships in our community. Stay tuned as the RPC will roll out

exciting new ways to engage members from the Young to the Young At

Heart.

For over a decade, Temple Adas Shalom has had a fruitful

relationship with Saint James AME Church in Havre de Grace and

Masjid Al Falaah in Abingdon. This year, we will be observing the Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday with our friends at Masjid Al Falaah on

Sunday, January 19th from 3pm to 5pm. Please mark your calendars for

this opportunity to connect with our Christian and Muslim neighbors in

Harford County. Be well, and hope to see you soon.

Gift Shop News

Pat Wolkow & Denise Gordon

We want to thank Terry Weiner for her generous donation of a new

laptop for our Gift Shop. We are getting closer and closer to having

online shopping! We are looking for volunteers to assist Courtney with

creating on-line product pages. Please contact Pat Wolkow.

In the coming weeks, when you have a snow day, start searching the web

for new items you may want for Passover! Send us a photo and link so we

can try to get you a better deal on your purchase. We can usually match

the price offered or even purchase for less because of wholesale pricing.

Did you know that we do not charge tax! If you plan to shop ahead of

time for your needs, and/or wish to support your Sisterhood, who in turn

supports our Congregation, then Give us a shout!

Pat & Denise

Social Committee

Charna Kinneberg & Michael Herrin

We had a social hall full of people having fun at our very first Daven and

Dine In. Our core group of helpers included Michael Herrin, Paula

Mullis and Henry Hoffman. Great team work allowed us to cook 50 lbs

of potatoes along with 20 lbs on onions in time for dinner and fun.

Up for consideration for the future include an old fashion picnic in the

summer and maybe a pool party.

If you enjoy throwing parties, have some ideas for other events we could

have, please consider joining our group. We'll be having a meeting in

January to plan some events. Contact Charna Kinneberg at 443-243-1711

if you are interested in having some fun!

Kehillah MAGNET Message

Jill Young & Joel Yoffee

Hi there!

We would like to introduce ourselves as the new Co-Chairs of the

Kehillah MAGNET religious school committee. We are Jill Young and

Joel Yoffee. Jill has two children in the Kehillah MAGNET program and

this year is a B’nai Mitzvah year for her, so she is quite busy! Joel also has

two children in the Kehillah MAGNET program, both post B’nai

Mitzvah and working toward Confirmation. Jill is a former teacher in

the religious school and Joel is a current 4 th grade teacher. Collectively

both of us have many years of teaching Hebrew and are glad to be of

service to the religious school and temple!

The survey results are in and based on your feedback, there have been

some changes to the format and schedule of our program. We will

continue to request feedback and discuss how we can best engage our

students and families in religious school programming. If you have

suggestions, please let us know!

In addition, there is an upcoming security training for leadership and

teachers with the Harford County Sherriff’s Office that we will be taking

part in for 3 consecutive weeks in January 2020. In this training we will

learn how to best prepare for emergencies through developing a plan of

action. We will also offer, for those who have not been trained, “Stop the

Bleed” and CPR training. They would like to have our Kehillah MAGNET

teachers involved. The safety of everyone at our temple is vital and we

encourage our staff to take part in this training. If you have any

questions, please see Pat Wolkow with the Security Committee.

May the 2020 year be a prosperous and healthy year for us all. Happy

New Year to you and your families and will see you around the religious

school!

B’Shalom,

Jill Young & Joel Yoffee

Sisterhood Message

Elise Woods

Greetings from the Sisterhood!

Please plan to attend our Challah Bake & Wine Event on Saturday,

January 11 th at 2pm at the synagogue. Melissa Immel (formerly Brown) will

demonstrate her challah baking prowess as she leads us in a fun

afternoon of baking. Why not stay warm in the cozy comfort of the

kitchen, so please join us if you can. Lite refreshments and wine will be

provided.

Then, on Saturday, February 1 st at 5pm, we will have our popular Chick

Flick Night. This year, in addition to the movie, we will play some

games. We will also have our usual Chinese food spread, snacks, and

drinks. If you have an idea on a movie that would be good for our group,

please let me know. Plan to bring your comfortable chairs, blankets and

wear your pajamas to take full advantage of the relaxing evening.

As a reminder, the Sisterhood sponsors the Tree of Life sculpture in the

synagogue lobby. Please see the attached flyer that can be used to order

leaves. Leaves may be inscribed to highlight or commemorate joyous

events like births, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, Confirmations,

Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, or to honor parents, family, and friends. Please

consider inscribing a leaf for your next special event. Your memories will

endure in our synagogue for a lifetime!
